New Special Magic Photo Shots for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party!

Believe it or not, it’s Halloween at Walt Disney World! It seems to arrive earlier and earlier every year.  This year’s Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Parties began earlier this week, and the Magic Kingdom is decked out in its finest fall and Halloween decor.  This year, Disney’s PhotoPass department has really outdone themselves and there are lots of new special magic shots for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.

What is a Magic Photo Shot?

A magic photo shot is a picture taken by a PhotoPass photographer with a little “magic” added to the picture that you won’t see until you look at the photo in your My Disney Experience app.  What the magic is depends on which park you are in and where in the park you are. The time of year and any special events also impact what Magic Shots are available.

Here’s an example of a commonly available Magic Shot at Magic Kingdom:

magickingdom magicshot,photopass, magicshot

The PhotoPass photographer will ask you to put your hands out in front of you or out to the side.  When you see your picture later, you might find a beautiful little fairy with an attitude.

It is important to note, there is no guarantee you will get a Magic Shot.  The longer the line for the photographer, the less likely you are to end up with a Magic Shot. If there is one you really want to get, don’t be afraid to ask for it, but be nice.  And please, be understanding if the PhotoPass photographer is unable to give you the Magic Shot you are requesting.  Depending on the location they are working in, they will only have certain Magic Shots loaded into their software. Also, if the lines are long, or if you’re asking for a shot that is event specific and you are not at the event–the Photopass photographer will not be able to help you.

New Special Magic Photo Shots for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

You may discover a few of these shots available during your Disney vacation this fall, even if you don’t attend Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. However, the vast majority of the new special magic photo shots I’m telling you about in this post will only be available during the ticketed event. If you’d like more information about Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, please read this.

Here are some of my favorite new and classic special Magic Photo Shots available during this year’s Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Parties festivities.  I’m also sharing where you’ll be likely to find these special shots available.

It’s Time for Halloween at Disney World!

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but fall is fast approaching.  Halloween candy is suddenly out at all the grocery stores.  Those “Spirit of Halloween” temporary shops filled with costumes and decorations for Halloween are starting to pop up around every corner. It’s true.  Autumn is coming, and with it, Halloween.  Halloween at Disney World has been an extremely popular time for many years.  Usually, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Parties (a separate, ticketed event) start in late August and run through Halloween weekend.  This year, Halloween at Disney World will look a bit different.

No MNSSHP Events–Cancelled

All the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Parties (MNSSHP) originally scheduled for this late summer and fall have been cancelled and refunded.  While this is disappointing, it is also extremely easy to understand.  With tickets for this event approaching $100 per person, attendee expectations are high.  Many of the cornerstones of a MNSSHP would be impossible under the current restrictions due to Covid-19.

Halloween at Disney World Halloween Fireworks
Hallowishes fireworks Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party (Photo: Disney Parks)

The Boo-to-You Parade, a staple of the MNSSHP, and my personal FAVORITE Disney parade, can’t happen in this era of social distancing.  Nighttime fireworks displays are NOT happening at the moment, again due to the gathering of crowds.  The special Halloween themed fireworks extravaganza is another vital component of MNSSHP.

One of the big highlights of the annual MNSSHP is that you can see characters you don’t often see, and most characters are in Halloween costumes of their own.  That’s very fun, but again, character greetings are not possible right now due to social distancing needs due to the pandemic.  Even the various shows and dance parties that are part of any MNSSHP can’t happen right now due to social distancing requirements.  Finally, you can’t trick or treat at the candy sessions in our current climate, because the social distancing lines would be EVERYWHERE, and it would be a mess.  So the parties are not happening this year.

Halloween Decorations at Magic Kingdom

There may be no Halloween parties this year, but Halloween is still coming to Disney World.  Disney will decorate the Magic Kingdom for the fall season, with lots of pumpkins and grinning jack o’lanterns.  Traditionally, most of the Halloween and fall decor is mainly on Main Street.  Some years, there’s been a little overflow into Frontierland.

It’s time for Halloween at Disney

Main Street USA will be decked out for Halloween from September 15 through October 31.

Halloween merchandise, however, is another story.  That will be (and already is, in many cases!) EVERYWHERE throughout the Magic Kingdom.  For more information on what Halloween merchandise has been released this year on ShopDisney.com, please visit this post.  Most of the Halloween merchandise featured at ShopDisney.com is also available in the park.  Disney has a short window of opportunity to sell their Halloween merchandise, so they will make it very easy for us to find!

Cavalcade of Characters

Since the parks reopened in July, character greetings have been off limits due to social distancing requirements.  Disney’s solution has been periodic “character cavalcades” where the characters come out on floats and interact with guests from a distance.  These happen a few times each day, and are vaguely reminiscent of the Move it, Shake it “mini parades” that they were doing the last couple of years.

For this Halloween at Disney World, Disney plans to jazz up the character cavalcades.  The characters will be dressed in their Halloween costumes!  I love this idea, and am happy that guests will be able to see the characters in their Halloween costumes without purchasing a pricey Halloween party ticket.

The really cute thing is that it seemed that each character had at least a couple of different costumes, so if you went every year to the party, the characters would be in different costumes.

Keep in mind these pictures are from MNSSHP from a few years ago, so we have no way of know which characters you might see this year in a character cavalcade, or what costume they might be wearing.

Adult Guests can Dress Up, TOO!

For the first time, Disney is letting adult guests wear costumes into the Magic Kingdom during regular business hours.  Previously, the only time adult guests (and children over 14) could wear costumes was to the separate ticketed event, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.  Costume masks are NOT allowed, however, for adults or kids.  Approved face coverings are still required, however.

All guests may wear their Halloween costumes or favorite Disney themed (or inspired) costumes into the Magic Kingdom this year, during regular park hours. The Halloween season at Disney World this year is from September 15 and October 31. It will be a TON of fun to see what everyone wears.

Just leave the costume weapons at home.  Consider the heat, and think about safety.  As Edna Mode would say “No Capes!”. They get caught, stepped on, ripped, dirty AND they’re heavy.  Capes are technically allowed, but we recommend against them!  Do YOU want to argue with Edna?

ShopDisney.comhas a lot of fun options for all ages (see last week’s blog post for more examples).

Halloween at Disney World: Snacks!

Let’s face it, when we start talking Halloween, most of us immediately start thinking of CANDY.  Sweets and treats, right?

Halloween at Disney World means LOTS of sweet treats, all themed to the season.

Halloween snacks at Disney World
Halloween goodies at Disney World (Photo: Disney Parks)

There are Halloween themed cupcakes and cookies and candy treats all over the Magic Kingdom during the Halloween season. You’ll find Halloween themed drinks, special Halloween ice cream flavors, even Halloween themed popcorn buckets!  If you have the budget (and the sugar tolerance), you could quite happily indulge in different Halloween sweet treats for DAYS.

PhotoPass Halloween Surprises!

If you’ve read many of my other posts, you’ve probably recognized that I am a BIG fan of Disney PhotoPass.  I love that there are so many opportunities throughout the parks where you can get pictures of your family or group without one of you having to NOT be in the picture in order to take the picture.

Disney Photopass Private Photo Shoot Inside Magic Kingdom

I also tell you all the time to take LOTS of Disney PhotoPass pictures when you are in the parks, because the quality of the photographers vary, as do the lighting conditions and the surrounding crowds.  You just don’t know what you’ll get, so play the odds!

One favorite Disney PhotoPass treat are the “Magic Shots”.  These are the pictures where the photographer “magically” adds something to your picture that will show up later, when you see the picture.

For example, you might see Tinkerbell sitting on your hand, or you might see a character sitting next to you on a bench.

Halloween Magic Shots

For Halloween, Disney has had a few Magic Shots in their arsenal, but USUALLY those were reserved for MNSSHP guests.  This year, some special Halloween themed Magic Shots will be available in some areas of the Magic Kingdom throughout the day between September 15 and October 31.  Keep in mind that not all PhotoPass photographers will have access to all Magic Shots.  If the line is long, and the photographer is busy, they may not have time to set up a Magic Shot.  These are special “extras”, not automatic or to be expected.

Here are a few sample Halloween Magic Shots that have been available in the past.  We don’t know yet what Magic Shots will be available this year. I’ll keep you posted as I learn more.

Are you ready for Halloween?

It still feels a bit early for me, but looking at all this stuff is starting to get me in the Halloween mood.  We won’t make it Disney World this year for the Halloween fun; our trip is in November this year.  But next year’s big family trip is in October, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the Magic Kingdom all decked out for Halloween.  I’m hopeful that at least some of these changes for day guests to the park will stay in place for next year, even if they have the ticketed parties next year.

Disney Halloween Merchandise 2020

Disneyland and Walt Disney World may have cancelled this year’s ticketed Halloween parties, but there is a LOT of fun Disney Halloween merchandise available for 2020!! Earlier this year, Disney made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s scheduled Mickey’s Very Scary Halloween Parties. A fairly large fall revenue source for Disney, these popular Halloween themed special events require a separate ticket for admission, and featured activities, entertainment and merchandise exclusive to the parties. (For more on this annual event, please see our posts here or here.)

Disney’s decision made sense to us.  With social distancing requirements already impacting so much Disney entertainment, fireworks and parades, there was just no way to provide guests with the value they expect for the price of the party ticket.  The decision was disappointing, but certainly the correct decision on Disney’s part.  Guests that had already purchased tickets are being refunded.

Disney may be losing out on party ticket revenue but they are NOT going to let that merchandise revenue slip through their hands.  Halloween is an extremely popular holiday in the United States, and  Disney Halloween themed merchandise is second only to Disney Christmas/Holiday themed merchandise.

ShopDisney.com Halloween Shop

If you are unable to visit either of the Disney parks this year, don’t worry.  ShopDisney.com has got you covered.  This year’s shopDisney Halloween shop is filled with fun Disney Halloween merchandise.  If you are a Disney Halloween merchandise fan, read on with caution.  I take no responsibility for your credit card melting. 😉

*The fine print: There are some links provided on our site and in this article. If you follow one of these links and ultimately make a purchase, we receive a small commission. This does not affect the price you pay in anyway. We provide information about Disney related products that we believe you will enjoy. Thank you.

Halloween Costumes

One of my favorite departments in the Halloween Shop at shopDisney.com this year is the Halloween costumes section.

I mean look at some of these…couldn’t you just die from the cute?

Baby Costumes

When I was little, my mom made our costumes, and they were the BEST.  But these days, most parents don’t have time to go the homemade route.  If you can’t go do homemade, I think these Disney costumes look like a great alternative.  (And if you ARE going the homemade route, I think you can find some terrific inspiration looking at all the Disney costumes!)

 Kids Costumes

The kids costumes have the widest variety of options. If your kid loves Disney or Marvel or Star Wars, you are likely to find something they will love.  Looks at some of these adorable options.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The pricing on the kids costumes covers a wide range. The lowest price I found was $29.99, and the highest was a whopping $500!!!

Disney has even included a couple of costumes for kids that have a wheelchair that also needs a costume.  Check these out!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Finally, we have the “not a costume” costume.  I love this idea for the kids in colder climates who always have to put a coat on over their cute costumes.  These are hoodies, themed to various characters.  Your kid can warm and cozy AND be channeling their inner Monster (or Princess).  There are a bunch of these, here are just a couple.

Adult Costumes

Of course, the adults can’t be left out of the mix, right? A word for my fellow plus size Disney fans—these costumes are not for us.  Most adult costumes come in S,M and L.  A few offer size XXL, but not many.  And based on my experience with Disney sizing, I predict these probably run small.  No plus size options at all.

There aren’t a lot of options in the Adult Costume category.  And like most Halloween stores, you’ll notice most of the women’s costumes walk the “sexy” line and most of the men’s are “heroes” costumes.

Here are some of the costumes I found:

The Sanderson Sisters would be fun if you were going to a party in a group, and all loved Hocus Pocus!

 Pet Costumes

I didn’t even think this was a real thing.  Over the years, I have seen some animals in costumes, but those were generally pretty simple and handmade. I had no idea that Disney pet costumes were a real thing.  But they are!!

These pet costumes are pretty intricate and detailed.  Would your pet actually be willing to wear one of these?

My favorite is the Ewok.  So darn cute.  But what dog would actually wear it and not chew on it?  If you dress your pet up for Halloween and they enjoy it, please send me a picture for the blog!  I’d love to post your pictures and show off your pet costumes.  They do not need to be Disney themed!

Home Decor

Well, it’s pretty hard to beat the costumes, but Disney does try in the home decor section.

If you are a fan of the Haunted Mansion, the Nightmare Before Christmas or Hocus Pocus, Disney has a home decor item for you to help get you home in the Halloween spirit.

Check out this cute collectible featuring the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus.  (Did you hear Hocus Pocus is getting a reboot?  More on that in a future post!)

The Nightmare Before Christmas stuff is really cute.  It also includes some party decorations (balloons, photo booth props, etc.) if you are planning a Nightmare Before Christmas Halloween party!

There is so much stuff!  I love the Minnie themed Halloween kitchen towels. There are several Mickey head pumpkin designs as well.  Take a look at just a few of the items below.

Haunted Mansion

And of course, there’s the Haunted Mansion merchandise. Disney’s line of Haunted Mansion themed merchandise is actually available all year round, but it seems particularly popular and appropriate around Halloween, doesn’t it?  There are TONS of items in the Haunted Mansion “shop”, but here are a few that could add to your spooky theme for Halloween.

Wearables

If you want to add a little Halloween into your every day wardrobe, this department is for you.  Lots of Disney Halloween themed backpacks, T-shirts, sweatshirts, face masks and socks.  There are pins and “ear hats” and even light up pumpkin Mickey head necklaces.  Here’s just a sample of all the goodies up for grabs at shopDisney.com.

Will Your Halloween Be Disney-Themed?

I don’t usually dress up for Halloween.  However, I have been known to throw on a pair of Mickey or Minnie ears for the occasion.  This year, I’m really thinking the Minnie Witch Hat ears and the light up Mickey head pumpkin necklace might just be my go-to.

What about all of you?  Do you decorate for Halloween?  Do you take your kids trick or treating?  Do you wear a costume or go to any Halloween parties?

Please like this post and share below.  I would love to know how you all celebrate Halloween, and whether any of you include Disney in your celebrations!

Disney World News and Updates

I hope this post finds you and your loved ones happy and healthy.  As many states, including Florida and California, make steps towards reopening, it’s time to think Disney.  Finally, as Disney makes plans for reopening both Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California, there is lots of Disney World news and updates to share with you!

Previously, we announced that Disney plans to reopen Walt Disney World parks, in limited capacity, beginning July 11. If you’d like more details on that, please check our post here.

We also announced that Disney had cancelled ALL advanced dining reservations through the end of the year.  If you need more information on this Disney decision, please click here.here.

Disney World News & Updates

Information is still somewhat limited coming from Disney.  However, they have been talking a lot about the successes they’ve been seeing at Shanghai Disneyland, the first Disney park in the world to reopen.

As mentioned in our previous post, Disney plans to reopen Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom on July 11, 2020.  EPCOT and Hollywood Studios will follow on July 15, 2020.  All four of these parks will open in a limited capacity.  What PRECISELY that means is not clear yet.  However, Shanghai Disney opened at about 30% of normal capacity. I think it’s safe to assume that the US parks will follow a similar strategy.

Disney World News and Updates
Old Key West DVC Resort (Photo: Brooke Hudson)

Disney has announced that Disney Vacation Club Resorts and Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground will open on June 22 for guests.  Guests who had reservations at a resort during this time that want to KEEP their reservation will be moved to one of the open resort properties. It appears that guests will not be able to chose which resort they are moved to.  Disney has stated that guests will not be able to change their resort.  Also, they’ve stated guests are responsible for increases in room rates, if applicable.

Guests with vacation packages that included a Disney Dining Plan will have the dining plan removed from their package.  Package rates will be adjusted accordingly. The Dining Plans will not be available for the foreseeable future.

My Disney Experience

Disney is stressing the importance of the My Disney Experience app.  If you ARE planning to visit Disney World during this initial reopening phase, it is imperative that you have your My Disney Experience updated. It is also important that your Disney vacation package or room reservation and tickets have been linked correctly in your My Disney Experience app.

Disney plans to use the My Disney Experience to communicate with guests visiting during this challenging time.  They stress that it is vital that all guests have their reservations properly linked and that the app is current.  It looks to me like they will be using My Disney Experience for the “Park Reservation” system they mentioned for reopening the park.

Park Reservations Required for EACH Park Day

To clarify, when the parks reopen, a “park reservation” will be required for each guest visiting a particular park on a particular day. Guests will be required to have both Disney resort reservation and park tickets for the day in question to be able to make a park reservation.  Details as to how this will happen, and what will happen if you have purchased park tickets, but aren’t able to make park reservations due to capacity challenges have not yet been released.

Disney World News and Updates

Disney is very clear that you will NOT be able to make park reservations for any dates that you do not have both resort reservations and tickets.  They are encouraging people to move their dates if necessary, prior to attempting to make park reservations.

At least for the short term, guests without resort reservations will not be able to make park reservations.  I’m assuming some kind of exception will be made for Disney Annual Passholders, but that information is not available yet.

More information is being released daily, so I will be sure to update you as soon as I know more.

Disney Resort Updates

Initially, Disney is only opening the DVC Resorts and the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.  The resort experience has undergone some changes due to Disney’s attempts to prevent us all getting sick.  (Thank you!)  Here’s a short video from Disney to give you a heads up on what to expect.

The downside is that I think we’ll feel less of that personal, warm cast member interactions at check in and the front desk that we are used to.  The upside is that I think Disney is doing absolutely everything they can do to insure our health and safety.  Short of keeping the resorts and the parks closed, I don’t know what else they could do.  Notice they are still asking guests to take some ownership for their own health and safety.  It continues to be important to wear face masks, wash your hands frequently, use hand sanitizer, avoid touching your face and maintain social distancing.

Transportation will be LIMITED When the Resorts and Parks Reopen

Magical Express, Disney’s FREE transportation for guests to and from Orlando’s airport will be available for Disney Resort Guests.

However, other transportation options may be limited.  It appears, at least initially, that Disney is planning to operate the Skyliner.  Most likely, social distancing practices will mean that only one party or group  will be permitted per cabin.

Disney Skyliner

Disney has not yet announced how buses, boats and monorails will operate.  We assume that there will be strict limits on capacity, to allow for social distancing.  I expect this will mean longer waits for transportation, at minimum.

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party CANCELLED for 2020This is one of the toughest Disney World news and updates we have this week.  Disney announced last night that they have made the difficult decision to cancel all the scheduled Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Parties for this year.  This is very disappointing for everyone planning to attend a party, of course.  However, Disney determined they just couldn’t deliver an experience of value with all the new restrictions in place.

Disney Halloween Parties cancelled for 2020
Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party (Photo: Disney Parks)

I love these parties, they are really well done.  The highlight for me is the Boo To You Parade–which couldn’t happen this year due to the Covid-19 restrictions.  There are a lot of stage shows and special Halloween fireworks–all of which would have been impossible with the Covid-19 restrictions.  At roughly $100 per ticket, I think Disney would have had a lot of unhappy guests had they proceeded with the parties.  I think many guests would have seen it as a money grab, and that is something Disney wants to avoid for sure.

Hopefully, over the coming year, Disney will come up with some new ideas for next year’s parties, especially if some of these restrictions have to remain in place.

If you have a ticket for one or more of the parties, Disney will be issuing refunds in the coming weeks.

Good News: 2021 Bookings Expected to Open up June 28

If you have been wanting to plan your 2021 trip, now is the time!  Finally, Disney is opening their systems back up to allow us to book resort stays, tickets, and packages for next year.  (Note: at this time, Disney is NOT opening up booking for later this year.  They are still manually trying to accommodate guests who had to cancel trips during the closure.)

This is very good news, and implies that Disney is optimistic that things will return to a more normal state next year.  It may be a “new normal”, but should be less restrictive than we can expect during the first few months the parks are reopening this year.

Initial reports do seem to indicate that the theme park reservation system that is being implemented for the parks’ reopening is going to stay in place for the foreseeable future.  I’m not sure yet what that means for park hoppers–I will keep you posted as I learn more.

It appears that all US Disney Resorts are included, including Aulani in Hawaii.

If you’d like to start working on planning a trip, I would love to help!  Please contact me at brooke@disneycastledreaming.com.

Final Thoughts

I think it is important to state that how quickly Disney opens more resorts and returns to a more “normal” type of operations will depend a LOT on guest response to the new rules and the new norms.  They have been very successful in China–but we don’t know how successful they will be here.  A LOT depends on guests adhering to the new rules, and whether or not anyone gets sick after visiting Disney parks or resorts.

Disney World news and updates
Photo: Disney Parks

IF guests wear masks and follow the rest of the rules, Disney’s new practices will help prevent the spread of new infections.  However, if guests resist wearing masks, don’t wash their hands, and don’t maintain social distancing, we could see a resurgence in Covid-19 as a result.  If this happens, we may well see Disney closing AGAIN, which is an outcome NONE of us want.

Restrictions and Limitations

It is completely normal to WANT to return to Disney as soon as possible.  We’ve all missed it.  Many of us have been confined for weeks or months.  Planning a vacation is a wonderful distraction.  However, it’s also really important to be honest with yourself.  As much as you want to visit Disney RIGHT NOW, or maybe in two or three months, are you willing to:

  • Wear a face mask while you are in the parks or in public areas of the resort?
  • Maintain social distancing?
  • Accept that many regular events and shows will NOT be happening?
  • Accept no fireworks?
  • Understand that there will be no Fast Passes?
  • Understand that dining options may be extremely limited?
  • Accept no parades or nighttime entertainment?
  • Understand that the play areas and splash areas for kids will NOT be open?
  • Accept that Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo and other “makeover” experiences will NOT be available?
  • Understand that most tours and experiences are cancelled?
  • Be okay with no character greetings or character photo opportunities?
  • Understand that character meals are NOT happening?

It’s a really tough decision, and if you were planning to visit this fall or winter, cancelling or rescheduling your trip is heartbreaking.  However, it is VERY important that everyone that DOES visit is willing to follow the rules and accept all the changes in their current state.  It’s possible things will loosen up and some events, shows, tours or experiences will return later this year.  Unfortunately, we don’t know that for sure.

Perceived Value

A Disney vacation is an expensive adventure. If some of the things that are most important to you are NOT going to be happening, are you going to feel that you are getting a good value?  Or will you be resentful?  Or will some of your family members feel they “missed out”?  These are perfectly NORMAL reactions, and there is nothing wrong with wanting your family to have a “full” Disney experience.

Disney has really cute face masks for sale
Disney themed face masks? Let’s go! Click the picture above.

There is also nothing wrong with NOT wanting to wear a mask in the Florida heat while you tour the parks.  However, for your health and safety, as well as that of your fellow travelers and the public at large, this IS a requirement.  It is not optional.  ALL guests visiting the parks MUST wear a mask at all times.  If that doesn’t work for you, it’s okay.  It just means visit later, when this rule has been lifted.  That COULD be later this year, or it could be next year.  We don’t know yet.

Just Because

My point is, just because you always go for Food and Wine in November, or you always go for a few days before Christmas–this may not be the year for you to stick to that routine.  Really think about it–will you be satisfied with your trip if you have to make these compromises?  If yes, then absolutely go for it, and have a great time.  The lighter crowds will probably be magnificent.  However, if these compromises will impact your enjoyment of the magic, stay home this year.  Let’s start planning for next year!

Disney World 2021 Vacation Packages Now Available
Artwork: Disney Parks and Resorts

I sincerely hope no guests put cast members in the awkward position of having to try and enforce the rules.  That would be really heartbreaking as a cast member.  This also could be jeopardizing both the health of the cast members and of other guests.  If you are not comfortable with the new rules and the new norms, do not plan a visit at this time.  Wait until next year, when hopefully, we will see a return to more normalcy.

I’m hoping this initial phase will go very smoothly, and that all guests will follow the rules.  Hopefully, Disney will be able to add back some experiences and entertainments within a few weeks.  I’m hoping that a cure for Covid-19 will be found, and we will all be able to stop worrying about it.

In the meantime, let’s get planning for that next trip–whenever it will be!

Happy Dreaming!

Free Dining is BACK!!

Happy Tuesday, Everyone!  Disney has made an exciting announcement today–FREE DINING IS BACK!!  I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Disney has released another free dining promotion for 2019.  It is fairly unusual for Disney to release this many free dining promotions in one calendar year.  I suspect Disney is not seeing the reservations for Fall and Winter this year  they’d expected.

If you’ve been thinking about planning a trip to Disney this fall or winter for the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, Mickey’s Not-so-Scary Halloween Party, or to enjoy the winter holiday magic at Walt Disney World, NOW IS THE TIME TO BOOK.

Free Dining is BACK

The Details

Guests booking a five night/six day Walt Disney Travel Company package at a Disney resort, along with a Park Hopper park ticket are eligible to add free dining to their package.

Package must be booked BY SEPTEMBER 29, 2019.

Surprisingly, if you look at the dates above, you can see that you would be able to book a trip that includes Thanksgiving (as long as you arrive by November 28) or Christmas (as long as you arrive by December 23).  That’s CRAZY unusual for a free dining promotion!

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party: Is it Worth it?

Photos courtesy of Disney Parks Blog

Here we are in October….Fall is here and it’s Halloween time.  Of course, at Disney, Halloween time is starting earlier and earlier every year.  This year, it began in AUGUST.  They decorated for fall and Halloween early in the 2nd week of August and the first Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween party was August 17th this year!  I’m sorry, I just can’t get in the mood for Halloween when I’m still hoping for beach and pool time, Disney or no Disney!

This is one of my favorite videos: it shows Walt Disney World getting ready for Halloween VERY quickly.  This particular transformation is from last year, but they follow pretty much the same process every year.  It’s short, but I think it’s kind of amazing how quickly Disney can make magic overnight….Take a look….

The video HELPS with the Halloween mood, but I still just couldn’t get in the mood until the weather here in the Midwest started to cool off and October showed up.  I realize that it’s still in the 80’s and 90’s in Florida, and that will continue for a few more weeks (or more)–but for us here in Chicago, October means cooler temperatures, leaves changing color, windy and often rainy days…so I tend to associate those things with Halloween.

So even though a few weeks of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween parties (MNSSHP) have already taken place, I just couldn’t bring myself to post about this year’s party until now.

And really, many of you are starting to think about next year’s vacation plans, and you may be considering a trip for next fall.  September and October can be a wonderful time to visit Walt Disney World–kids have gone back to school, and while there are a couple three day weekends here and there, any family vacations planned during this time will require pulling kids out of school, at least for a day or two, and many families can’t make that work.  This CAN translate to lighter crowds than you might see at other times of the year.

If the fall is an option for your family, you could be considering MNSSHP.   With ticket prices starting at $85 and climbing as high as $125 for parties at the end of October, you may be asking yourself….$100+?????  Is it worth it???

That’s the big question, right?  And unfortunately, as ticket prices keep climbing every year, and the number of tickets they sell for the parties appears to keep climbing as well, that question is getting harder and harder to answer.

mickeys-not-so-scary-halloween-party-map1

A few years ago, I would have told you, ABSOLUTELY, YES!  I would not have even thought twice.  I would have said, “If you have the time and the funds, plan on attending the party.” In those days, the tickets maxed out around $70…and Disney carefully capped the crowds to keep the parties feeling very much like a special “privileged” VIP event.  Don’t get me wrong; there were definitely lots of people, especially for “sold out” parties; however, these days, “sold out” is much closer to peak park attendance and borders on unpleasant, at least in my opinion.

What this means is that it’s not the automatic ABSOLUTELY YES that it used to be.  Now, it’s more important to really think about whether this is a value for you and your travel group.  Does this make sense for you?

Let’s take a look at the basics first.

What are you getting for the price of your ticket?

mickeys-not-so-scary-halloween-party-map2

  • Access to the Magic Kingdom with your party ticket as early as 4 p.m., until the party ends at Midnight.  Note: the party doesn’t actually begin until 7 p.m.–however, if you really want to maximize the value of your party ticket, do NOT use a park pass day to visit any parks on party day.  Make it a relaxing day.  Enjoy the resort, or plan the party for your travel day.  Get to the Magic Kingdom in time to enter the park at 4 p.m., so you can play a little  and perhaps eat dinner before the party begins.   Bonus: If you’ve managed to have a restful day, you’re much more likely to have energy to enjoy the whole party–right through until the end–Midnight.  If you’re likely to be wiped out by 9:30 p.m., most likely you won’t feel like you got a good value for your $100.
  • Boo to You Parade:  The Boo to You Parade is ONLY offered during MNSSHP.  It’s offered twice a night, and a lot of people with little kids tend to clear out after the first parade.  I usually recommend hitting the second parade…While lots of people are watching the first parade, you will likely find shorter lines for attractions and character greetings.  In my opinion, the Boo to You Parade is a really great parade.  If the weather is good, you usually get to see the Headless Horseman riding along the parade route shortly before the parade begins…it’s eerie and awesome.  The parade is fun, and there are lots of things you don’t normally get to see.  Having said that–if you have been to these parties a couple of times, the parade doesn’t change.  It doesn’t get updated, it hasn’t changed in several years.  I love it, but it alone is not worth the price of the ticket, especially if you’ve seen it before.

  • Characters in Costume:  One of my favorite things about MNSSHP is that you get to see the characters in their Halloween costumes.  I really enjoy seeing Minnie in her Witch outfit or Daisy as a princess and Donald as her knight….Some years there is some variety in the costumes, but reviewing pictures from the last few years, it seems that many character costumes get repeated.  Regardless, it’s still a lot of fun.

MNSSHP2031

  • Special Character Greetings: MNSSHP is especially fun if you love character greetings, because often, there are characters available for character greetings during the Halloween party that you would never get to see otherwise.  For example, this year’s party features Anastasia and Drizella (Cinderella’s stepsisters), Cruella DeVil, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the Queen of Hearts, Jack Skellington and Sally, the Gravediggers, Brer Rabit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear, Moana, Jafar, Tarzan, Jane, Terk, Elvis Stitch, Lotso (Toy Story 3), the Seven Dwarfs, Alice and the Mad Hatter, among others.  You’ll also find a lot of your regular favorites in their Halloween costumes, like Goofy, Minnie, Daisy, Donald, Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger.  And of course you can still find all your favorite princesses at Princess Fairy Tale Hall.

Photo Courtesy of Disney Parks Blog
Photo Courtesy of Disney Parks Blog

One caveat to consider:  As both parties and character greetings have become more popular, the lines have gotten longer and longer for many of the more popular “unique” characters at these parties.  If that picture with the Seven Dwarfs or Jack & Sally is your holy grail, you may need to plan your entire party experience around it, getting in line extra early, and being prepared to WAIT.  Last time I went to MNSSHP, we saw lines for some of the most popular characters that exceeded 90 minutes.  These parties are only five hours long, and that if you stay until midnight, so you do have to prioritize what you REALLY want to do.

  • HalloWishes:  What would an evening at the Magic Kingdom be without fireworks?  MNSSHP is no exception.  Usually at 9 or 9:30 p.m. (check the schedule for the night of your party), Disney will present HalloWishes, a spectacular Villains themed fireworks spectacular…and it is really terrific.  And again, it is something you can only see if you’re at the party.  Or having dinner at Narcoosee’s at the Grand Floridian during a party.  Or at the California Grill at the Contemporary Resort.  Or on the beach at the Polynesian Resort.  Or on your Magic Kingdom facing balcony at Bay Lake Tower.  But I digress.  Honestly, while all those locations outside the park are great ways to watch Disney fireworks and get a different perspective, there is nothing like BEING in the park during one of the shows to really be WOWED.  And HalloWishes is a WOW show.  At least for me personally.  But I’m a big fan of Disney fireworks shows, especially all the incarnations that have been at Magic Kingdom.  This is another show that has remained the same for many years.  I still love it, I still think it adds a lot of value to the party, but I know there are those that say that if you’ve seen it a few times, it might not be worth the ticket price anymore. Or that it might be wiser to squeeze in another character greeting or attraction instead of watching HalloWishes.

  • Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular: This is a very popular stage show that was new for the 2015 MNSSHP, based on the very popular Disney “cult classic” 1993 film staring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy.  While the movie basically bombed when it originally came out, it has become a revered Halloween seasonal favorite for many as the years have gone on, thanks to frequent cable and network airings.  The Castle Mainstage productions are always very popular at these parties; the shows are usually 20 – 25 minutes long, and generally fairly crowded.  This one has been more positively received that the two Villain themed shows that preceded it…but it has the same idea at it’s heart…bring as many favorite villains on to the stage as possible as Halloween is the time when the villains get to rule the night…It’s a great chance to get pictures of villains you may not see very often.

  • Scream-o-Ween Dance Party: These dance parties are fairly hilarious…this one is in Tomorrowland, and includes Mike, Sully and Boo.  They try to get everyone dancing and usually, it’s the littlest kids that are the most fun to watch.
  • Trick or Treating: There are several candy stations set up throughout the park, so you can take you trick or treat bag to each station (wait in line) and get your “free” candy.  For me personally, these are kind of a waste of time.  The candy is usually not great–it’s whoever donated it that year–there’s almost never any chocolate (probably smart in the Florida heat and humidity…but come on!  Halloween without Hershey kisses or mini-candy bars???  It’s a crime!!)  Anyways, it’s usually odd flavored hard candy or other strange things–I don’t know, I haven’t been too impressed with this element of the parties.  I think if you have little kids that LOVE to trick or treat, they might get a kick out of it, but the lines were so long at the last party we went to, it just was not any fun.
  • Cadaver Dans Barbershop Quartet:  Sure you can see the “Dapper” Dans any old day at the Magic Kingdom, and they are terrific….but you can only find the “Cadaver Dans” at MNSSHP.  These guys perform in Frontierland try to kill you with laughter…or something like that.  They’re pretty fun if you catch them.

  • Special Treats: There are special food items and treats that are only for sale during MNSSHP.  Note: If any of these items turn out to be REALLY popular, you may see them show up on a regular menu or kiosk in the future…sometimes the parties are a bit of a testing ground for new items.  Or a “special” themed cupcake that’s only for the party will end up being sold during the day throughout October.  So take the “only for sale during the party” idea with a grain of salt.  This year’s “special treats” include: Pumpkin Cheesecake (Main Street Bakery), Hades Nachos (Pecos Bill’s), Worms and Dirt (Pecos Bill’s), Zero Waffle Sundae (Sleepy Hollow), Jack Skellington Cake Push Pop (Sleepy Hollow), Madame Leota Dessert (Liberty Square Market), Hitchhiking Ghost Dessert (Aloha Isle), Oogie Boogie Meringue (Gaston’s Tavern), and the Muenster Smash Burger (Cosmic Ray’s).

  • Special Party Only Merchandise: There is special merchandise that is only available during MNSSHP.  And they are NOT kidding with this one.  The stuff comes out at 7 p.m. (or a little before) and you cannot buy it without a party ticket.  AND once it’s gone, apparently, it’s gone.  I have been disappointed a few times by having my heart set on a particular pin or shirt, only to find it was sold out by the time I got to a party (or was ready to buy at the end of the night).  This year’s special party only merchandise includes a limited edition Magic Band, party themed pins, special passholder only pins, and a villains themed pin set; party themed shirts and an ear ornament, themed to the party.  There is also a line of products themed to the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular, including a mug, tote bag, shirt and collectibles.  Some items are special for passholders only.  There’s also a line of “Hocus Pocus Costume” t-shirts designed to “sub” for a costume–and again, only available at the Party.   The “party only” merchandise has always been a big draw for me for these events I’m not gonna lie.  I’m a shopper.  There’s no getting around it.  If the party’s at the beginning of your trip, take advantage of package delivery, and have your purchases delivered to your resort for free.   Then you don’t have to lug them around the party all night.  A word of warning:  Buy it when you see if the first time if you want it….or risk dragging your poor husband through every shop in the park as the park is closing to find that exact special party only item you HAVE to have that you didn’t buy when you saw it earlier in the evening…not that I know anything about that, of course.

Pictures Courtesy of Disney Parks Blog

  • Shorter lines for popular attractions due to smaller crowds:  This one is getting a little more questionable as Disney is selling more tickets for these parties, and the parties are becoming more crowded.  Generally, the idea is that because the park is closed to day guests, and the number of party attendees is “much less” than a typical “crowded” park day, the attraction lines are shorter.  However, the same thing happens during the party that happens during the day: people gravitate to the most popular attractions, so some queues for less popular rides are walk ons, and there will be long lines at popular attractions.  The line might be 60 minutes instead of the 150 minutes you might see during a typical crowded afternoon, but during a short 5 hour party….you have to decide how much time you are willing to wait in line, especially if you know you may be able to ride these same attractions later in your trip.  It does get better later in the evening, especially after the first Boo to You parade is over, and even more so after the fireworks.  The last two hours are usually pretty good for both character greetings and attractions, unless the party is VERY crowded, with obvious exceptions being VERY popular character greetings (like Jack & Sally) and attractions (like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train).
  • Exclusive Photopass “Magic Shots”: there are special magic shots that Photopass photographers can only do during MNSSHP.  If you’ve been reading my blog for long, you probably already know that I am a NUT for photos, so the special magic shots are a real seller for me, especially because they really weren’t doing these a few years ago…this is one of the areas where the parties have started offering MORE, instead of less.  This year, there are a number of special magic shot opportunities, according to the Disney Parks Blog.  There are a couple shots on Main Streets where your party will be joined by some mysterious “ghostly” visitors.  At the entrance of the Magic Kingdom, you can get a great shot where the headless horseman joins your family.  There’s a scary glowing pumpkin shot that mimics the traditional “Tinkerbell” in your palm photo…that one looks pretty cool.  Over near the Haunted Mansion, you can hitchhike with some friends, take a ride in a ghost driven hearse, and perhaps meet a very famous HatBox Ghost.  The ghostly ones are my favorites, and I’m excited to see so many new ones have popped up.

And there’s one more “hidden” benefit, that’s not TECHNICALLY included in your party ticket, but tends to be one of the BEST parts of attending a MNSSHP: seeing all the guests that come to the party in costume!  Costume regulations and rules have gotten a lot more strict in the last couple of years due to safety concerns, so this isn’t QUITE as much fun as it used to be, but it is still a heck of a lot of fun.  I’ve been surprised at how many guests dress up in costume.  Some go VERY elaborate–others go pretty casual and easy with it, but it’s so much fun to see what everyone has thought of!  And it’s even more fun to plan a costume for yourself or a group theme for your whole family or travel group….Just keep in mind the warm temperatures.  You do NOT want to spend the evening melting in your costume…and be sure to review Disney’s costume guidelines here.

I wish I had a better picture of this, I know it’s a little blurry, but I had to share. One of the cutest costume ideas I saw at the last MNSSHP I attended.

So we come back to the original question: Is it worth it?

Some things I suggest you consider:

  • Have you ever been to a Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party before?  If not, I think you should probably put a point in the YES column.  It’s definitely something everyone should do at least once, if they have the opportunity and means.
  • Do you like Halloween?  Let’s face it, if you are NOT a Halloween person, don’t like it when people dress up, don’t see the point of trick or treating and don’t enjoy scary movies (even funny/scary)…You probably should just give MNSSHP a pass.  It’s just not your cup of tea.  However, if you LOVE Halloween, love getting dressed up, LOVE all things ghostly and pumpkin related…you may want to put another point in the YES column.

  • Can you plan the party attendance into your trip so that a) you don’t spend the whole day in another park and get worn out b) you are able to be in costume, ready to start your evening, at Magic Kingdom, at 4 p.m. (or 5 at the latest?) c) feel like you are likely to be able to enjoy the whole party, all the way through until Midnight? and d) deal with the impact that late night will have on the NEXT day–can that day be a rest day?  Or a water park day that starts at 10 instead of 7?  If all these answers are yes, that’s another point for the Yes column.  If all are NO, then you may want to pass on the party.  If you come down more mixed up, you probably need to do some careful thinking.
  • Do things like special merchandise, special food, special photopass magic shots ONLY available tat the party matter to you?  If they’re important, put a point in the YES column.  If you could care less, that’s a point in the No column.

  • How do you feel about parades?  If you love the idea of a unique, nighttime parade featuring characters you don’t often get to seem, put a point in the YES column.  If you really don’t enjoy parades, hate having to find a place to sit or stand to watch the parade, get annoyed with the crowds, etc., that’s a point for the NO column.
  • How do you feel about fireworks?  If you are a fireworks fiend, put a point in the Yes column.  If you don’t care about them, or strongly prefer to avoid them, that’s another check in the NO column.

  • Where do you land on special Character greetings?  Are they important to you?  If so, that’s another Yes vote.  If you can’t be bothered, that’s a big NO.
  • How many people in your group?  What are their ages?  There are a couple of reasons to look at this.  For two adults, it’s a lot easier to move around the party and avoid crowds, moving quickly and adapting the plan as needed.  For two adults and two kids in strollers, it gets more difficult to move through crowds, and the priorities are doing things that will make the kids happy.  Skipping the trick or treat stations may not be an option.  Staying until midnight may not be something you want to do.   You need to plan ahead for parade and show seating, which will eat up some of your time from attractions, character greetings or trick or treating, so you’ll need to consider your priorities.  For three adults, a six year old and two teens, there are still more things to consider.  Do you want to stay together the whole time?  Split up for part of it?  Does everyone have the same interests?  Do you want to focus on the shows and parade, or rides and character greetings?  Think about the group you would bring to the party.  Consider whether they would enjoy it, and whether you would enjoy it with them.  If the answer is yes, then that’s more points in the YES column.  If you’re not sure, you’ve got some more thinking to do.

  • Can you afford it?  This is REALLY the big question.  A Disney vacation is an investment.  For many of us, it’s something we have budgeted for, and planned for and saved for.  You have to consider your budget.  Realistically, can you afford the tickets for the party for your group?  Will it put a dent in your food budget or your souvenir budget?  Or, since you are doing the party one day, could you buy 1 day less on your Magic Your Way tickets, and make up some savings that way?  Could that make it work for you?  I know not everyone needs to worry about these matters.  For some people, budget it not a concern.  If money is no object, and you want to go to the party for 2-5 hours, go for it.  It’s a fun time, with lots of unique experiences.  But for those of us who are more budget conscious, it usually means a trade off.  What do I have to give up, if I buy these tickets?  So give that some thought, and make sure you are comfortable with your choice.
  • Consider the value:  If you pay $100 for your party ticket (less if you go in August or September, more if you go closer to Halloween), and you attend the party from 7 p.m. – 12 p.m., you’re spending $20 per hour for the party.  Think about all the things available at the party, and recognize you will not be able to do all of them.  Think about the things that would be most important to you and your travel group, and imagine that with proper planning you’ll be able to do at least most of them.  Would you feel like you got $20 per hour worth of value for each person?  Would you feel good about your investment?   If you enter the park at 4 pm, you’ve added a couple hours to your park time, and now you’re spending $12.50 an hour.  Conversely, if you leave at 10 p.m. and arrived at 7 p.m., you’ve spent $33.33 an hour.  You are the only one that can determine the right value for you and your family or travel group.

Do I still think the parties are worth it?  Mostly.  It’s hard, because I struggle a little bit with that “good old days” thing.  They used to not be so crowded.  They used to be more affordable.  They used to have this.  They sometimes had that.  Blah blah blah.  But time marches on, and we live in the here and now.

Today, given what we are hearing about the crowds and the lines, is it still worth it? For me personally, it’s probably still yes.  It’s not as strong a yes as it used to be, and I’d try to stay a lot closer to that $80 than the $100.  If I really wanted to attend, I would spend some extra time planning and try and choose a night that would hopefully not be sold out or super crowded.  I would choose a night earlier in the season when prices are lower, and I would take advantage of whatever discounts I could.  I would probably plan my night pretty carefully to make sure I could maximize the things that are important to me and my group.  But gosh…when you sit down and think about all that you can see and do in 5 hours, all the options available…it’s hard to imagine NOT finding $20 per hour worth of value in that….for me personally.  But that’s me.

I love the parade, I love the fireworks, I love the shows, and the silly dance parties and seeing everyone all dressed up.  I love the special merchandise and the silly special food items, and the Haunted Horseman.  I love the characters that wander around, talking to guests, that you don’t have to wait in line for, that you might just bump into.  I love the different lighting and music that plays during the parties.  I love the festive mood of the parties.  I love watching little kids’ faces when they see the gravediggers making sparks on the street with their shovels during the parade, or when they see Mickey and Minnie in their Halloween finery.

You have to think about what you love.  And what’s important for your vacation.  Your group.  And your budget.  And then of course you have to think about the magic and the memories you want to bring home from your trip.  And if it makes sense for you and your group, go for it.

The bottom line: you’ll have lots of amazing moments throughout your trip, whether you go to the party or not.  Come on, it’s DISNEY!  You KNOW it will be magical!

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party — Is it Worth it?

Boo to You

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party (MNSSHP) is the Halloween-themed special event for Halloween at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.  Please note: There is also a Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party offered at Disneyland.  Since I’ve never been to that one, I don’t feel like I can tell you much about it, so this post is strictly about MNSSHP at WDW.  It’s held on select evenings starting in AUGUST (which seems REALLY early to me to start thinking HALLOWEEN but I digress).  The party is a special “extra” event that requires a separate ticket.   The event runs 2 – 3 nights per week through November 1.  Officially, the party goes from 7 pm to midnight on the days it is scheduled, so the Magic Kingdom closes to regular day guests at 7 pm.

Party ticket prices start at $74 for the parties at the beginning of the season, and gradually increase, the closer you get to Halloween.  Tickets for the parties close to Halloween tend to sell out early, even though they are priced $100+.  This year, the dates for MNSSHP are August 25 and 29, September 1, 7, 10, 12, 15, 17, 19, 22, 24, 26, 29 and October 1, 3, 5, 6, 9,10, 12, 13 15, 17, 19, 20, 22, 24, 26, 27, 29 and 31 and November 1.

The main question I usually get is “Is the Halloween Party Worth it?”  And my answer, as with many things Disney is, “It depends.”  A few years ago, when tickets were still $50-$60, my answer was an automatic YES.  I think the parties are fun and the parade and the fireworks are really something special.  However, prices have gotten a lot higher over the last few years, making it a much more challenging decision.

Benefits:

  • Early admission: Even though the party doesn’t start until 7 pm, you can enter the park with your party admission any time after 4 p.m. 4 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. means 8 hours in the Magic Kingdom; and with the exception of the “SOLD OUT” parties and the parties close to Halloween, generally the crowds are lighter than a “typical” park day at the Magic Kingdom, so you can usually take advantage of shorter lines and ride more attractions.
  • Boo to You Parade: This is one of my favorite parades that Disney offers. The Boo to You parade features floats and dancers that you don’t get to see any other way.  All the Disney characters featured in the parade are wearing their Halloween costumes.  It’s fun and not to be missed if you attend the party.  It’s offered twice during the party, once at 9:15 pm and once at 11:15 pm.  Generally, we attend the 11:15 pm parade as the crowd is lighter by then.

  • Hallowishes Firesworks: At 10:15 pm, a special Disney Villains themed fireworks display shoots off over Cinderella’s castle. If you’re not a fireworks fan, it’s a great time to get on rides with short or nonexistent lines, but if like me, you’re a fireworks fan, Hallowishes is pretty terrific.
  • Headless Horseman: Right before the parade, as long as the weather is good, the Headless Horseman gallops down the parade route, through the empty streets (blocked off for the parade). It’s creepy and cool at the same time.  Note: He does not always ride so you can’t count on it 100% but when he does, it’s a big highlight of the night.

  • Special party-themed merchandise: At 7 p.m., the shops will put out special Halloween Party themed merchandise that is ONLY available during the party. At minimum, there are usually special pins, shirts, and ears, and often other “special” items.  There are special Halloween Party pins available for Annual Passholders and DVC Members, again, that you can only get during a party.  If you’re not a merchandise person, this is no big deal but as a (somewhat reformed) souvenir junkie, I’m always eager to check out the special party themed merchandise.
  • Treat Stations: throughout the park, there will be “Treat” stations where you can stand in line with your trick or treat bag and get free candy from whomever is a party sponsor that year. This is something I think has kind of deteriorated in recent years, but still seems to be a fairly big draw, especially for the kids.  You used to get more candy, and a bigger variety of candy.  Now, it seems the lines are longer, the candy is pretty standardized, and you don’t get much at the various stations.  Not a big deal for me personally as I generally skip this altogether, but for some people it’s a main attraction.  This year, there are 14 “Treat” stations, including a special “allergy-friendly” station in the Town Square Theater for those with special dietary restrictions.
  • Castle Forecourt Stage Show: There is always a Villain themed stage show offered on the Castle Forecourt Stage a few times during the party.  It’s usually a 15-20 minute show and I’ve always enjoyed them as a way to see characters you don’t often get to see in the parks.  This year’s show is themed the Disney classic Halloween movie, “Hocus Pocus”. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve heard good things.  It sounds campy and fun.
  • Costumes: MANY MANY MANY guests dress for Halloween for these parties, and that is one of the best highlights for me personally. I love seeing everyone in their costumes.  The creativity and variety is really fun to see.  There are some restrictions for security purposes—you can’t wear any costumes that cover your face, you can’t carry weapons, etc. (for a full list of restrictions, check out Disney’s website), but people manage to do some pretty terrific costumes.  You don’t have to wear a costume, but it’s more fun if you do–even if it’s something quick and simple.  One note: Keep the Florida heat and humidity in mind.  It is NOT fun to melt in your costume, trust me on this.
  • Character Greetings: As with the parade, all the characters at the Character greetings during the party are in their Halloween costumes, so you can get unique pictures that you can’t get on a normal park visit.

SONY DSC

  • Special PhotoPass Themes: If you have PhotoPass pictures taken during a Halloween party, you will have access to the Halloween party themed PhotoPass stickers and borders that you can add to your pictures.
  • There are usually some special “Magic Shots” only available during the Halloween Party. If you’re not familiar with Magic Shots, these are pictures taken of your group by PhotoPass photographers with something special added “magically” into the picture after they take it.  For MNSSHP, these usually include hitchhiking ghosts or a ghostly hearse driver.  Note: I have heard recently that ghostly magic shots are no longer limited to MNSSHP; however, in my experience, you had to get the picture taken at the party to have access to those special shots.
  • Shorter lines for attractions: You cannot book Fast Pass Plus reservations for any attractions during a party, but generally, you won’t need them. Once the party gets going and regular day guests have left, there are a lot fewer guests in the park than on a regular day.  There are exceptions to this:  In recent years, Disney has increased the number of tickets they sell for parties, and the sold out parties, especially near Halloween, can get pretty crowded from what I’ve heard.  I’ve only ever attended parties in late September or early October, so our experience has always reflected pretty light crowds, especially later in the evening after parents with little kids have gone home.

Things to Consider:

  1. There’s no getting around it, this is a pricey ticket.  If money is no object, the parties are fun and offer some unique merchandise and entertainment that you won’t get to see unless you buy a ticket to a party.  So, I say go for it.  If, however, you are like me and money IS a big deal, this can be a much more challenging decision.  If you are an Annual Passholder, you technically already have a park ticket for this day, so you can feel like you are paying twice to attend a party.

Some ways that we’ve made the party ticket a worthwhile spend for us:  1) we usually plan the party for a day we DON’T visit any other parks—we just go to the party. Often, this is the day we arrive, and would most likely not get a “full” day in at the parks anyway.  2) We avoid parties that fall on weekends or close to Halloween—those tend to be more crowded (and more expensive!)  3) We plan to arrive at MK at 4 p.m. to maximize our time at the park for the evening.  If possible, we either sleep late that day, or, if it’s a travel day, we try to catch a short nap in the afternoon before the party.  4) we stay for the entire party, not leaving until they throw us out after midnight.  5) We take advantage of as many party-themed unique entertainment options as we can.  In other words, we watch the shows, we go to the parade, we stake out a good spot for the fireworks.  We will take character pictures if the lines aren’t too long.  6) We ride as many of our favorite attractions as we can during the party, knowing the lines will be longer on other days.  We usually ride during the first parade, as well.  6) We take lots of PhotoPass pictures.

If you are NOT an annual passholder, planning to attend a party means you can buy one day less on your park tickets.  If you were planning to purchase 5 day pass, purchase a 4 day pass instead.  Just make sure you don’t visit any parks on the day of the party—make it a rest day, or a Disney Springs day.  It’s not a big savings on your park pass, but it can help defray the cost of your party ticket a little bit.

SONY DSC

  1. Do you LOVE Halloween?  Do you like to be SCARED at Halloween?  This is NOT a scary Halloween event, like Halloween Horror Nights at Universal or Fright Fest at Six Flags.  This is a family themed Halloween event, much more focused on FUN than SCARE.  So, if you love haunted houses and people jumping out at you, you might not enjoy Disney’s idea of Halloween.
  2. Do you like to dress up for Halloween? Do you have a terrific family theme idea for your Halloween costumes?  Do you like seeing the characters in unique costumes you don’t normally see them in?  If any of these answers are yes, you would probably enjoy the party.
  3. AGE and ENTHUSIASM. I’m not sure this is a great value for families with small children, even though small children are part of the target audience.  Most of the time, I see families with small children leave after the fireworks, about an hour and a half before the end of the party, and often I see small kids conked out on parents’ shoulders or in strollers way before that.  That’s a lot of money to spend for a couple of hours of entertainment and some trick or treating.  And some REALLY cute pictures!  Definitely an individual decision for sure.  If you know you won’t be happy after 10 pm, you’ll just be too tired, the party probably isn’t worth it for you.
  4. There is an available add-on you can get, again, if money is simply not a concern for you: there is a HalloWishes Dessert Party, priced at $79 per adult, $47 per child ages 3-9. Note: the HalloWishes Dessert Party requires a MNSSHP ticket, so this is $79 on TOP of the party ticket.  Basically, Halloween themed desserts and a special fireworks viewing area.  Personally, I don’t think this is a good value at all…it takes up too much of your time and there is just too much other stuff going on at the party that you don’t want to miss.  Plus, WAY too pricey in my opinion.

SONY DSC

So…the bottom line:

If money is not an object and you like a FUN Halloween Disney themed event….plan to attend Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.

If you can attend a party earlier in the season, and replace a regular park day with attending the Party, MNSSHP may be a reasonable value for you.

If you are a costume junkie (or LOVE seeing Characters and visitors in costumes), MNSSHP should definitely be on your wish list, if the pricing makes sense for you.

If you like to go to bed early, or prefer your Halloween to be truly terrifying, give MNSSHP a pass.

I’d love to hear your perspective on Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.  Are you attending this year?  Planning for next year?  Let me know!
