Cinderella Castle is Getting a Makeover

In preparation for next year’s big 50th Anniversary celebration, construction projects are ongoing throughout Walt Disney World.  I’ve been wondering what Disney had in store for my beloved Cinderella Castle.  Honestly, I’ve been worried.  In previous years, they have done some questionable things to the castle.  But now the mystery is over.  Disney has officially announced that Cinderella Castle is getting a makeover.

25th Anniversary: Cinderella Castle Becomes a Giant Birthday Cake

Here’s one of the reasons I was worried.  Does anyone else remember (with horror) the “birthday cake” Cinderella Castle that Disney did for the 25th Anniversary? If they’d done if for a day or a week, I probably wouldn’t cry every time I think about it, but it stayed like this for more than a year!!!  They painted the castle bright PINK.  Now I like pink as much as the next girl, but not on Cinderella Castle for goodness sake!  As if the pink wasn’t bad enough, they attached all these inflatable things.  It was AWFUL.  I mean, the concept was cute I guess.  But the beautiful Cinderella Castle looked like this for more than a year.  1996 was NOT a good year for Cinderella.  I think maybe she let her Fairy Godmother decorate after a few too many nightcaps!

50th Anniversary: Cinderella Castle is Getting a Makeover

Fortunately, it looks like I didn’t need to worry.  For this anniversary, Disney has decided to go classy instead of tacky.  Disney announced this week that Cinderella Castle is getting a makeover.  The castle is going to be repainted and additional gold accents are being added.  I’m assuming all the gold is in recognition of the golden anniversary.  If you aren’t already familiar, a 50th anniversary is the golden anniversary.  Magic Kingdom opened in October 1971.  October 2021 will be the 50th (golden) Anniversary for the Magic Kingdom, and by extension, Walt Disney World.  Magic Kingdom was the only park at Walt Disney World until Epcot opened in 1982.

What do you think?  I think it looks pretty good.  This is pink, but it is not the hideous BRIGHT pink of the 25th anniversary.  I think the gold accents and trip pieces look pretty, and will likely be sparkly in the Florida sunshine.  There are a lot of scary things Disney could have done to the Castle for the big anniversary.  I am relieved that they have chosen to go classy.

The Downside of Cinderella Castle Getting a Makeover

Unfortunately, there is a downside to Cinderella Castle getting a makeover.  In all likelihood, this repair work is will last all summer and possibly into the fall.  This will mean scaffolding around the castle.  It could mean crane work.  I’m not sure exactly what will be involved, or how dramatic the equipment and workers around the Castle will be.

I know everybody always complains when the crane is out for a couple of weeks in the fall to put the icicle lights on the castle for Christmas.  People often get upset about the crane being in their pictures.  I know I have a series of crane Castle pictures that I don’t love.

Nonetheless, I expected Disney was going to do something with Cinderella Castle for the big 50th Anniversary.  If they’re going to do something, this is about the least offensive thing they could do.  I also don’t think it’s gonna take a super long time to complete.  Hopefully by the end of the summer, this will be a completed project.  It’s likely they will do the work in phases.  For example, they will have scaffolding on one area of the Castle at a time, so the whole Castle won’t be covered.  This way, guests will be able to get pictures from certain angles without scaffolding in their photos.

It’s All About the Attitude

I recommend that if you are visiting Walt Disney World this summer, know that you are likely to see scaffolding on the castle.  I understand that is disappointing.  Cinderella Castle is a beautiful icon and I completely understand that you want great pictures from your vacation.  Mostly likely, you were not planning to have scaffolding or other construction equipment or workers in your photos.  I get it.  However, keep in mind there are a TON of other locations around the parks where you will get fabulous pictures that won’t feature scaffolding.

Additionally, I suspect there will be some angles of the Castle that will still be lovely and without scaffolding.  Perhaps from the rear of the Castle.  The Castle is actually very lovely from the back.  The Castle is also very lovely from each side.   I believe there will be angles for photos where the scaffolding won’t be an issue.  However, I don’t know that for sure.  Disney hasn’t shared how they’re going to approach this project.  They also haven’t given us a firm end date for the project.  So far, they’ve just indicated the work will begin soon, and will continue throughout the summer.  So, if you are visiting this summer, you are going to probably going to see the Castle in process of being painted.

Look on the Bright Side

On the other hand, if you have Castle scaffolding in your pictures, you are getting a very unique picture.  This isn’t a common occurrence, and not many guests will see this project while its underway.  So if you ARE visiting this summer, try to have as positive an attitude as possible about the project, and manage your expectations.  If you expect there to be a lot of scaffolding, and when you arrive, there’s only a small amount, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.  I’m a big believer in your attitude determining how terrific (or not) your vacation is.  Read this post for more on this topic.

The Good News

There is some good news here.  Of course, first and foremost, Cinderella Castle is going to look beautiful when it’s finished.  The popular daytime show, Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire, that takes place multiple times each day on the Castle Forecourt Stage, will not be disrupted according to Disney. It’s a cute show that features the Fab 5 and has a little fireworks at the end.  This show will go on, which I think implies Disney is not doing major construction.  They’re just putting up scaffolding and painting, primarily.  This will be a relatively minor incursion into the public Castle spaces.

Disney also stated that Cinderella’s Royal Table and the Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo Boutique will not be affected.  This should mean you will still be able to walk through the Castle throughout the day to access Cinderella’s Royal Table and the Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo Boutique.

Happily Ever After

Disney has also promised that Happily Ever After will not be affected by the makeover for Cinderella Castle.  Happily Ever After is the nighttime fireworks spectacular choreographed to music.  The show is filled with lots of intensely colorful projections of scenes and animation onto Cinderella Castle.   I interpret this statement from Disney to mean that all of the projections currently shown on the Castle during the show will continue to be shown.  I’m guessing that we won’t even notice any scaffolding during the show.  The projections are so bright and so detailed and play such clever tricks on our eyes, I suspect they will obscure any actual construction materials.  The nightly fireworks show is an integral part of any visit to the Magic Kingdom for many guests, so I am happy that the show will not be affected by the makeover project.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I think Cinderella Castle getting a makeover is a good thing.  I’m very happy that Disney is taking the 50th Anniversary so seriously.  They’ve been sprucing up all over the parks and throughout Walt Disney World property in preparation.  Epcot is getting a major update, some of which has been needed for a very long time.  A number of new attractions are coming over the next year, too.  The new Tron coaster at Magic Kingdom, the Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster at Epcot.  We getting the Ratatouille attraction in Epcot this summer, as well as a new quick service restaurant in France.  Almost every country in Epcot that has a film in their pavilion has gotten or is getting a new film.  Hollywood Studios is practically bursting at the seams now with all the new stuff that has come on line in the last year!

There are a lot of really positive things going on right now.  There have been some years that pretty big anniversaries were not recognized or celebrated at all.  I’m happy that the 50th is a really big deal for Disney.  I think the park next year, 2021, especially in the fall is going to be amazing.  I really think if you can come in the fall of 2021 you’re going to see all four parks and in general Disney property in the most beautiful condition it’s ever been in.  It’s all very exciting.

Private Photo Session Inside Magic Kingdom from Disney PhotoPass

Have you ever wanted to have a private photo session inside the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World?  Have you wished you had a photographer with you to capture a special moment or event?  Disney has a new offering that might be what you are looking for.  With the new PhotoPass offering “Capture Your Moment”, Disney has made it possible for you to schedule a private photo session inside Magic Kingdom.

Private Photo Session Inside Magic Kingdom?

Disney, forever on the lookout for ways to make us spend our money, has come up with a new PhotoPass offering. The new PhotoPass offering is called “Capture Your Moment”.  When you book Capture Your Moment, you are booking 20 minutes of time with a Disney PhotoPass photographer inside the Magic Kingdom theme park during regular park hours.

Sometimes, you want a PhotoPass photographer to be focused exclusively on you and or your family for longer than the one – three pictures most PhotoPass photographers have time to take.  Examples include baby announcements, birthdays, proposals, anniversaries, baby gender reveals, and family reunions.

Disney has obviously seen the professional photographers roaming around the parks with their clients, taking pictures.  They’ve also seen the gorgeous pictures online taken by professional photographers to commemorate engagements, baby announcements, girls’ weekends, and many other events.  Since, as we know, Disney wants ALL our money, they certainly don’t want us hiring outside photographers to capture our special moments!

Private Photo Session Inside Magic Kingdom: The Basics

      • Available in the Magic Kingdom only.  (At least right now!)
      • $50 for a 20-minute session; $100 for a 40-minute session.
      • During regular park hours.
      • Limit of 8 people per shoot.
      • Photos are NOT included in session price.
      • Advance reservations recommended. Call 407-939-7758.

Could We Use This For Wedding Photos?

The short answer? No.  Disney wants to be very clear that is NOT for wedding photos.

Disney also made it very clear this will NOT replace the private Bridal Photo Session available for both Disney and non Disney brides and grooms.  These pricey sessions happen in the early morning hours before the park opens, and are truly private.

Bridal and wedding attire is specifically prohibited for the PhotoPass sessions, so if you’re going to do a Capture Your Moment Disney PhotoPass photo shoot, plan to avoid the floor length gown, the glamorous white dress or the tuxedo.

What Locations Are Available?

Disney is not releasing location information or options for these sessions.  At least, not yet.  Current policy dictates that your photographer will review the location options with you when you meet for your session.  Once your photographer has given you the options, you will be able to choose your location.

Disney is doing this for a couple of reasons.  One, they want the flexibility to adapt to park events, crowds and activities.  Two, they want the flexibility to schedule sessions at the same time in different areas of the park.  Three (and this is totally my own suspicious nature), Disney may not want guests to focus on particular locations.  For example, I suspect Cinderella Castle may be a preferred backdrop for many guests.  However, stage shows, parades and Castle projection shows will make that challenging many times each day.  So perhaps Disney hopes to dissuade guests from assuming they can take photos at the Castle.

Many of the marketing pictures Disney has released with this announcement do include the Castle in the background. Perhaps I’m being too cynical.

I can envision a scenario where Castle locations are available initially as a test balloon.  Once Disney sees which locations are the most popular, I suspect pricing will be revised.  Maybe a tier structure will be introduced for certain locations.  I suspect we will eventually see a tier structure at some point, based on my observations of Disney business practices over many years.

Can I Request a Particular PhotoPass Photographer?

At the moment, it does not sound like you can request your photographer but you could certainly try.  If you have a particular PhotoPass photographer that works at the Magic Kingdom that you like, you could request them for your Capture Your Moment session.  It’s not clear how many PhotoPass photographers are available for this offering.  It is also not clear if the pool is limited to the most experienced PhotoPass photographers.

If you do request a particular photographer for your Capture Your Moment session, please let me know how it goes.  Those of us that live out of state probably don’t have a favorite PhotoPass photographer.  However, I bet  local residents that visit the parks often have favorites.

Are the Photos Going to Be Digital or Print?

All pictures taken by your PhotoPass photographer during your session will be digital.  As with all PhotoPass pictures, you can visit a PhotoPass center in one of the parks, and purchase physical prints of the digital pictures if you want to.  Generally, if you have the downloaded digital files, you will be happier with printing the photos from somewhere like Shutterfly or MPix.  More options are available, and prices are almost always better.

The price of your Capture Your Moment session does not include the actual pictures taken during your session.  Let me say that again:  the digital files of the photos taken during your session are NOT included in the session price of $50.  The good news is that if you already planned to purchase Memory Maker (which I highly recommend for all visitors!), or if you are an Annual Passholder, you will have access to these pictures, along with any other PhotoPass photos or attraction photos.

Memory Maker

With Memory Maker you have up to 30 days after your trip to download all pictures and videos attached to your My Disney Experience account.  Because individual downloads start at $14.50 per photo, it doesn’t take long for Memory Maker (at $169 for advance purchase) to be a reasonably good deal.  There are currently 13 attractions that take picture or video during the ride, and as long as you have a Magic Band (or scan your ticket at the end of the ride on your picture), all those videos and photos WILL be on your account.  For more information on Memory Maker, please visit this post.

Disney does offer a one-day Memory Maker for $69.  If you’re doing a super short trip, or you really aren’t interested in any of your ride photos or PhotoPass pictures from any of your other park days, this option is worth considering.  As long as you schedule your PhotoPass Capture Your Moment session on the day you have your one-day Memory Maker on your account, all the pictures from your session will be available in your Memory Maker.  Alternatively, you’ll have the ability to view the pictures and purchase the downloads on an individual basis.

Scheduling Your Private Photo Session Inside Magic Kingdom

It is recommended that you schedule your session in advance (Call 407-939-7758) to guarantee availability.  However, there are currently some same-day sessions are available.

You cannot be late for your session.  Once you have reserved your session, you’ll be told where to meet your photographer.  Disney states that if you are late, your session will not be extended.  As an example:  If you have a 20 minute session that is supposed to start at 3:30 pm, you arrive at 3:45 pm, your session will last 5 minutes.  Disney says under no circumstances will the sessions be extended.

Things to Consider

If you’ve always wanted to do a private photo session inside Magic Kingdom, the Capture Your Moment session may be a perfect solution for you.  However, there are a few things you want to consider before booking your session.

      • The Capture Your Moment sessions will occur during regular park hours.  This means you will likely have other guests in the background of your pictures.
      • You have the option to book 2 sessions back to back.  This would give you 40 minutes of time with your PhotoPass photographer.  Again, this whole session will be inside Magic Kingdom during regular park hours.  BUT this does mean you (and your family) are sacrificing park time.  This could frustrate kids eager to go ride rides and have fun.
      • The skill and talent of the in-park PhotoPass photographer varies from photographer to photographer.  Some PhotoPass photographers are pretty good, and are able to adapt to changes in light and shadows.  Others are basically able to push the button and maybe notice if you’re in focus or not.  There there are varying levels of quality amongst the PhotoPass photographers, so that’s an important consideration for readers considering one of these sessions.
      • The cost of the individual pictures are likely to be high.  Of course, if you have Memory Maker or are an Annual Passholder, your photos are included.  If you have to purchase the pictures individually, they will likely start at $14.50 per photo download.  If you end up really liking all your pictures, the pricing can add up really quickly.  (Note: You CAN add Memory Maker during your trip. It costs more to do it this way, $199 versus the $169 advance purchase.  So if you like at least 10-14 pictures, you’ll want to add memory maker.  Then you’ll get all  pictures through Memory Maker.  This will save money over purchasing individually).
      • This could be tough to do as a surprise.  Since you are meeting your photographer at the start time of your session, and THEN choosing a location, it could be challenging to set up a surprise for the photographer to capture.  (A proposal, for instance.)  I suspect PhotoPass will find a way to help you, but I don’t know for sure.  This could add unnecessary stress to your big moment.

Potential Quality Issues

Let’s talk a little more about the potential quality issue. One would assume that the photographers used for the Capture Your Moment sessions will be skilled and/or Senior PhotoPass photographers.  There are definitely very good PhotoPass photographers out there.  There are many stories of PhotoPass photographers that really loved their job and got really good.  They emerged as very skilled photographers that eventually joined the Disney Fine Art Photography team or went out on their own.  However, my PhotoPass library can testify that there are also some not-so-great PhotoPass photographers out there.

Again, I am assuming that Disney will choose its best PhotoPass photographers for these sessions.  However, I can also envision a universe where these are popular and in high demand and require all hands on deck.  This could result in a situation where you pay $50 for your session and end up with pictures you’re not happy.  I think initially, these are a little bit of book at your own risk.  Especially right now while this is a new offering.

Once we’ve had a chance to get reports back from people that have booked these sessions, I’ll feel more comfortable recommending them strongly.  I want to know how it went, where they took photos, what locations were offered, etc.  I will keep my ear to the ground on this one and let you know what I hear.

Capture YOUR Moment

Right now, I am cautiously optimistic about this new offering from PhotoPass.  $50 for 20 minutes is quite a bit of money.  However, if it’s a once in a lifetime or a very rarely in lifetime occasion, I could see it being a fun and special experience.

For example, if you’re at Disney World to celebrate your grandma’s 90th birthday and you want to have a lot of pictures of the whole family, this could be your solution.  A group of pictures of Grandma with all the grandkids; just Grandma by herself; the girls with Grandma; Grandma with her children; the boys with Grandma –you guys know what I mean.  You just can’t hold up a regular PhotoPass photographer for very long and take a bunch of different groupings.  So this might be a great solution for you!

Another scenario:  If you’re planning a special “in the moment” event and you want lots of pictures, this could also be a perfect session for you.  For example, if you are planning to propose or tell your whole family you’re expecting a baby.  This could be terrific for that.  When my husband proposed to me, he did it at a regular PhotoPass photographer. We got lucky because he didn’t have a line, and he got pictures of the whole thing.  (Of course, it was a pretty quick moment.  It was following our first marathon, and I initially thought he’d fallen!).

Private Photo Session Inside Magic Kingdom: Final Thoughts

Your mileage may vary on whether you find value in this package or not.  If you really want a private photo session inside Magic Kingdom, and don’t mind the presence of other guests in the background, this might be for you.  Also, if these are talented photographers and you get a bunch of good pictures out of it, you might want to schedule this.  Finally, if you already planned on buying memory maker, you may find this has value for you.

If you’ve been reading my blog for any period of time, you probably know that  I am a huge proponent of PhotoPass.  Mainly because I love pictures.  Before PhotoPass, I always came home from vacation with tons of pictures.  Unfortunately, I was almost never in any of them.  PhotoPass makes it possible for your entire family to get into many pictures.  My favorite souvenir from vacation is almost always the photo book I make after our trip, filled with pictures we took and pictures taken of us by PhotoPass photographers.

So, for someone like me, Capture Your Moment might be something I will consider at some point.  Maybe for an anniversary or another special event.  However, I still think $50 is a lot of money for 20 minutes.  Who knows what the future holds?  One of the few regrets I have from our Disney Fairy Tale Wedding trip is that we were unable to do a Bridal Portrait shoot at the Magic Kingdom.  I really wanted that darn picture with Frank and I in our wedding clothes in front of Cinderella Castle.  With the rules and schedules in place at the time, we just weren’t able to make it happen.  So, perhaps a more casual private photo shoot inside Magic Kingdom with PhotoPass photographers might be worth the cost?  I’m not sure.

The Details

Disney TRON Construction Update

It’s time for another Disney TRON construction update!  If you missed our previous post on the new TRON attraction coming to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, click here to check it out.

The First Vertical Columns Are Going UP!

While construction began on the TRON “coaster” style attraction began more than a year ago, there wasn’t a whole lot of VISIBLE progress.  So much has to happen to prepare the ground to support the weight of the attraction, and even more has to happen to support the electrical needs of the attraction and the technology the ride will require.  To the casual observer,  the early phases of any attraction construction project often look like there’s not a whole lot going on.

Luckily, we’re not casual observers, right?  Disney has announced that they have begun installing the steel columns that will support the attraction.

Where IS the TRON Attraction?

TRON is being built in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.  It’s going next to Space Mountain, mostly in space that was previously empty.

Disney has modified the Speedway slightly to make room for TRON.  They’ve also stopped running the Walt Disney World Railroad for the forseeable future, while construction proceeds on TRON.  I don’t know if this means the Railroad is ultimately being rerouted, or if the current track will still be in place once construction on TRON is completed.  It’s entirely possible that once it’s safe for the Railroad to resume circling the park and traveling behind Tomorrowland, we’ll be able to tell that nothing changed on the route.  However, I suspect that the Railroad track may need to move over a bit to make room for TRON.  Too soon to tell.

Regardless, we do have a pretty awesome artist rendering of what the TRON attraction is expected to look like.

We also got a new picture of the steel column that cast members signed.  As we discussed in the previous Disney TRON construction update post, an important milestone of the TRON project was when Disney invited cast members involved in the project to sign one of the steel columns that will become a part of TRON.

When Can We Ride?

While there’s no “official” opening date (it’s WAY too soon!), it looks like the expectations are that TRON will be completed in time for the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World in 2021.

Are you excited about this attraction?  From the brief glimpse we get in the video above, I think TRON looks like it will be very different from anything else we have at Disney.  I’m hoping it will be a ton of fun, and that it will absorb a lot of guests.  I’m always a fan of attractions that can swallow up a lot of the crowd.

NEW Extra EXTRA Magic Hours Coming to Walt Disney World

If you’ve ever stayed at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you probably know about Extra Magic Hours.  Extra Magic Hours (EMH) are just one of the benefits of staying on Disney property.  EMH are a HUGE advantage for guests who want to minimize their time waiting in lines.  With regular Extra Magic Hours, there are certain days each week when Disney resort guests can enter the EMH park one hour earlier than all other guests.  Alternatively, EMH may mean staying up to three hours later than all non-resort guests at the EMH park.

This fall, Disney is taking Extra Magic Hours to a whole new level with Extra EXTRA Magic Hours!

DAILY Extra Magic Hours

Beginning August 29, 2019 and running through November 2, 2019, Disney will begin offering DAILY Extra Extra Magic Hours.  Extra Extra Magic Hours (EEMH) will be offered in three of the four theme parks at Walt Disney World.

Magic Kingdom: Extra Extra Magic Hours will happen every day from 7 am to 8 am at the Magic Kingdom for resort guests.  Just like with regular Extra Magic Hours, not all attractions are open during Extra Extra Magic Hours.  Extra Magic Hours and Extra Extra Magic Hours feature the same attractions–favorite rides in both Tomorrowland and Fantasyland.

Animal Kingdom: Extra Extra Magic Hours will happen every day from 7 am to 8 am at the Animal Kingdom.  Pandora – The World of Avatar attractions ARE included.  Also included are other attractions throughout Animal Kingdom. (The same attractions currently open during regular Extra Magic Hours).

Hollywood Studios: Extra Extra Magic Hours will happen every day from 6 am to 9 am (That’s THREE HOURS PEOPLE!!!).  The EEMH WILL include Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land and select other attractions.  Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and its experiences are subject to capacity.  NOTE: From August 29 – 31, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will open at 6 am to ALL guests, not just resort guests.  The Extra Extra Magic Hours for Hollywood Studios for Resort Guests will begin September 1.

Wait, What About Epcot?

Epcot absorbs crowds better than any of the other three theme parks.  In addition, Extra Magic Hours are not as necessary or popular at Epcot as they are at the other three parks.  Also, at Epcot, Future World opens at 9 am (usually) and then World Showcase opens at 11 am.  Morning Extra Magic Hours may frustrate Epcot visitors that wanted to visit World Showcase during EMH but World Showcase is not part of morning EMH.

Epcot will continue to have regular Extra Magic Hours on select days, just like it does now.  Epcot will NOT be getting Extra Extra Magic Hours.  Note: Of course this policy COULD change later in the summer, but I don’t expect it to.

Also, keep in mind that the popular Epcot Food and Wine Festival will be running during this time, and that’s the big attraction at Epcot in the fall.  Opening at 7 am wouldn’t be very beneficial as I don’t think they want to open all those wine and food kiosks that early! 😉

Why?

Disney has introduced these new Extra Extra Magic Hours in anticipation of record crowd levels this fall.  With the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios coming August 29, interest in a Walt Disney World vacation has never been higher!  Disney is anticipating very high guest demand for its most popular attractions throughout Walt Disney World, but most especially at Hollywood Studios, for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Disney is trying to ensure the satisfaction of resort guests by guaranteeing them more opportunities to access the parks with smaller crowds, before the parks open to the public each day.  Theoretically, if guests are early risers and willing to be up and at the parks early in the morning, they are more likely to be able to visit more of the attractions they’ll want to visit.

This policy also helps add more value to staying on Disney property.  Disney is always looking for ways to get more guests to stay on Disney property and these new Extra Extra Magic Hours are a great step in that direction.  All those extra available hours EVERY DAY add a lot of value to your theme park tickets!

The Fine Print

Extra Extra Magic Hours require a valid theme park admission and hotel ID.  Note: If you are using your Magic Bands as your room keys and your theme park tickets, your Magic Band will serve as both theme park admission and hotel ID.

If you do NOT have the Park Hopper or Park Hopper Plus option on your tickets, you will be spending the day in whichever park you choose for Extra Extra Magic Hours.  In other words, if you DON’T have Park Hopper, and start your day at 6 am at Hollywood Studios, you will be in Hollywood Studios for the entire day (unless you leave the park and go back to your resort, of course).  You will NOT be able to visit a different park after Extra Extra Magic Hours are over.

If you DO Have Park Hopper, you can “hop” to any other park you choose throughout the day, regardless of where you go for Extra Extra Magic Hours.

All Attractions are NOT Part of Extra Extra Magic

Not all Walt Disney World attractions are available with Extra Magic Hours or Extra Extra Magic Hours.  Park hours and participating attractions for Extra Magic Hours or Extra Extra Magic Hours are subject to change without notice.  All participating attractions and experiences are subject to capacity limitations and cancellation.

Fast Passes are NOT available during Extra Magic Hours or Extra Extra Magic Hours.

Will Extra Extra Magic Hours Be Extended After November 2?

I don’t know.  This is the first time Disney has offered DAILY extended hours for resort guests.  Obviously, this will significantly impact Disney’s daily operating costs–a lot will depend on how successful this program is during its initial offering.  Guest response and feedback will also significantly impact whether Disney either extends Extra Extra Magic Hours, or ever offers it again during busy periods.

If it has a major impact on guest satisfaction and crowd flow AND they see profits from people staying longer in the parks and spending more money, I think its very likely that we could see something like this again in the future.

Until Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is actually open, and we see the way Disney manages crowds in and around that new “Land”, it’s difficult to anticipate WHAT will happen from a crowd flow capacity in ALL the parks, once Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is finally open.

Construction Update: TRON at Magic Kingdom

Today’s Construction Update focuses on Tron at Magic Kingdom.

Announced in Summer 2017, there hasn’t been a lot of activity surrounding the Tron coaster-style attraction coming to the Magic Kingdom.  I suspect this is partly because Tron doesn’t have the big fanbase that Disney once hoped it would have, and partly because so much attention has been focused on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, opening this summer at Disneyland and Hollywood Studios.

This is probably a positive thing, we haven’t all been driving Disney crazy with the equivalent of “are we there yet?” for THIS attraction…unlike we did for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  (But hey, it worked, so I’m NOT complaining!)

Shanghai Disneyland’s #1 Attraction

The Tron attraction currently under construction at Magic Kingdom is based on TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland.  This attraction was an opening day attraction for Shanghai Disneyland.  TRON is a giant hit for Shanghai Disneyland.

TRON Lightcycle Power Run is a coaster-style attraction that has passengers ride a train of two wheeled Lightcycles for a race through the digital frontier.  Just like the movie, I guess.  Although both Tron movies kind of confused me…I really liked the original one, though.  Did any of you see the original Tron (1982) or it’s sequel, Tron Legacy (2010)?

TRON Lightcycle Power Run is the highest rated attraction at Shanghai Disneyland.  I’m guessing that led the powers-that-be to consider if the attraction could be a good fit another park.

Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom

It makes sense right?  A popular attraction, already designed and tested.  Some changes might be necessary, but basically, the heavy lifting is already done for the attraction.  Imagineering already did the design, the creative work, choosing the materials, the budget, the schematics, the plans, even the way the queue works–all that’s been done before.   Construction even knows what problems came up during that phase, and how they were solved.

But where to put the new attraction?  It make sense in Hollywood Studios, because it’s based on a movie property…but Hollywood Studios is currently getting all the focus for Star Wars, so maybe NOT there.  Epcot Future World might be a good fit–the whole digital frontier thing is vaguely futuristic…of course the original movie is almost forty years old at this point.  AND there’s already a TON of stuff happening at Epcot (see last week’s post), so maybe it’s not the best choice either.

Disneyland in California is currently using a LOT of space for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, so maybe not there.  California Adventure just finished the whole Pixar themed update….so maybe not there.

Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World hasn’t gotten anything new in a LONG time.  And we have some room over there next to Space Mountain, on the side… WINNER!

Ok, I have no idea if that’s how the decision making process went AT ALL.  But it’s fun to think about, isn’t it?  Bottom line, they decided to bring Tron to Magic Kingdom, and they’re making room for it by basically expanding the footprint of the Magic Kingdom.  Disney is putting Tron next to Space Mountain, into some unused land between Tomorrowland and Storybook Circus.

Impact on Nearby Attractions

To accommodate construction on Tron at Magic Kingdom, a few other attractions ARE being affected.

  • Tomorrowland Speedway: This one is pretty short term.  The Tomorrowland Speedway closed in January 2019, and is expected to re-open mid May 2019.  Disney is moving and/or re-routing the track to make room for Tron.
  • Walt Disney World Railroad: This is painful one.  The Walt Disney World Railroad is closed for at least the next year, possibly longer.  To soften the blow, Disney plans to park the train at the Main Street station, and allow guest to explore the train and take pictures with it.  But the lovely and relaxing (one of my FAVORITE ways to take a break) ride around the circumference of the park is not possible for the foreseeable future.   They haven’t officially said, but I believe some track has to be re-routed and they don’t want the trains coming through the construction areas.  Sigh.  I’m excited about a new attraction, but very bummed about no train for a long period of time.
  • UNOFFICIAL: I haven’t been there to verify this, but there is a walking path between Storybook Circus and Tomorrowland that I suspect may be impacted by Tron construction as well.  This area is often inundated with smokers, so it’s not the quiet restful path it once was.  It’s always been a pretty good “cut-through” or short-cut.  However, the path runs right next to the train tracks for a bit, and then along the Tomorrowland Speedway track as it approaches Space Mountain.  I have a hard time believing this area has been left untouched and accessible, but I will confirm for you first chance I get.

This week, the first steel support columns were put in place for the new attraction.   Prior to the columns being put in place, cast members and team members working on bringing Tron at Magic Kingdom to reality celebrated a major milestone.  They were invited to sign their names on one of the columns, making their “permanent mark” on the attraction.  Wouldn’t that be cool?  To know forever that a tiny piece of you, your signature, was part of that attraction?  I think that would be pretty thrilling!

Disney hasn’t been too committal on when we can expect to take our first ride on Tron at Magic Kingdom.  However, Disney is promising that the new Tomorrowland attraction WILL be open in time for the 50th Anniversary celebration in 2021.

I’m happy to see that Disney continues to invest in new attractions and expansions to our favorite parks.  As crowds continue to grow, I think it’s more important than ever that new attractions arrive to absorb more people.

For lots of Disney fans, EVERY year is a good year to visit Disney World.  In fact, if you ask me, almost every month of every year has lots of terrific reasons to visit Disney World!

Freezing at Disney?

I never met a Disney day I didn’t like.  Croaking hot or freezing cold.  Crowded, rainy, crabby people, phone calls from the office, giant group, or just me and my husband–never matters.  I always love my time at Disney.  (Of course, I might be just a LITTLE crazy, so there’s that).

However, this year, a lot of die hard Disney fans are deciding to wait to visit Walt Disney World until 2020, wanting to ensure their next trip includes the long anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  I don’t blame them at all.  If Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is a MAIN attraction for your next trip to Disney, I am recommending 2020 to a lot of my Disney travelers.

Right now, it looks like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open at Disneyland in California some time this summer.  Hopeful reports say June…more practical reports are anticipating July or August.  I suspect we’ll know more by March or April.  At Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, early reports predicted late October/early November, but more recent reports have indicated December is more likely.  Again, we’ll know more later this year.

However, Disney has SO much more to offer than Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, especially THIS year.  Yes, I’m SUPER excited that Galaxy’s Edge is coming and I’m DYING to check it out, but that doesn’t mean that 2019 isn’t still the PERFECT time to visit Disney World.  Here are my Top 5 Reasons to Visit Disney World in 2019.

Ticket Prices

Disneyland raised its ticket prices a few days ago.  I’m sure there are a variety of reasons behind this decision.  Most of you are probably aware that ticket prices have been steadily increasing at BOTH Disneyland and Walt Disney World every year for quite a while now.  Here are a few things to consider:

Disney has invested more money in BOTH Disneyland, California Adventure AND Walt Disney World in the last 10 years (adjusted for inflation) than they have at any other time in the Company’s history. Toy Story Land opened to record crowds and crazy long lines. Pandora’s VERY popular Flight of Passage attraction continues to routinely attract crowds and lines in excess of 90 minutes.  While the Toy Story franchise is of course much beloved, it doesn’t hold a candle to the popularity of Star Wars.  Avatar’s fan base is tiny in comparison to Star Wars and while it will probably grow over time as more films are released, it will never touch the popularity of Star Wars.  I do believe Disney’s Pandora (as a land) will grow it’s own fan base, separate and distinct from the Avatar movie franchise, but again, a drop in the ocean against the size of the Star Wars fanbase.  And of course, there are are tens of thousands of Star Wars fans that are not necessarily “Disney” fans or Disney theme park fans that will be VERY interested in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge…and may discover a previously undiscovered love of Disney in the process.  (I suspect there is more than one executive at Disney betting their bonus on this possibility!)

Star Wars is a unique phenomenon in fandom.  It has fans from all over the world, in almost all age groups, and in most ethnic groups.  Star Wars fans are passionate and voracious for new Star Wars “stuff” and Disney hasn’t been the number one leader in entertainment for the last fifty years without learning a few things about how to provide new “stuff” and how to make lots of money related to all that new “stuff”.   Disney has gambled BIG with their acquisition of LucasFilms and the Star Wars franchise, and they’ve had some major victories as well as some pretty significant setbacks.  They have invested BILLIONS in these theme park expansions, and while I fully expect they will earn BILLIONS more as a result, that’s going to take a while.  And Disney is a publicly traded company–some of you probably own stock.

Disney has shareholders to keep happy–and shareholders like to see VERY healthy bottom lines.  So in the short term, I personally think Disney theme parks is going to justify (and help offset) those giant investments and shore up profit margins with higher ticket prices, merchandise prices and probably resort prices heading into late 2019 and 2020.  (I think this is also why we have so many feature films on the docket this year.  Disney movies tend to be VERY profitable and make lots and lots of money!)

Note: Disney’s fiscal year is unusual–it runs October through September instead of January through December like many companies.  Disney’s fourth quarter ends with September.

What does this mean for you, and why do I think you should visit Disney this year?  While I do suspect Walt Disney World ticket prices will see another ticket price increase later this year, I believe ticket prices are set for right now, especially in packages.  Disney World released their “date based” ticket pricing last fall, and scheduled ticket prices right up through mid December 2019.  I’m hopeful that indicates that tickets prices will hold steady through most of the year.

Planning ahead is always best, and booking sooner rather than later will always protect your pricing–this holds true for trips next year as well.  Plan your trip as early as you can–lock your prices in early.  If prices decrease, you can usually get the discounts added, especially if you work with a Disney travel agent (like me 😉), but if they increase, you won’t have to pay the higher prices.  Ticket prices are lower now than they are likely to be next year: a great reason to visit Disney World in 2019!

Lighter Crowds

The reality is that many people will not have the budget to visit this year AND next year–and SO many people will want to make sure to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, they’ll be planning their trips to Walt Disney World for late 2019 or 2020.  Which means you, my savvy traveler, can benefit from lighter crowds (in theory at least) THIS year.

I’m not promising empty streets and no lines…those days are long gone, I’m afraid.  And of course there are TONS of families that just don’t care about Star Wars (REALLY???  Who ARE these people???  Just Kidding).  BUT, the numbers don’t lie, and current resort bookings support lighter crowds at this point for much of the year.  Of course that can change at any time, especially as Disney adds special promotions designed to attract higher crowds. [FREE DINING, anyone?]

But lots of folks have already booked their trips for next year and aren’t likely to move them.  And here’s the real hardcore truth: this year is probably the last year where the crowds won’t be just BANANAS all the time.  If you look at how aggressively Disney has been adding resorts, expanding resorts, partnering with local “good neighbor” hotels–they are anticipating a LARGE increase in visitor volumes in the coming years, once Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens.

Here’s my thoughts on all this expansion: all those lovely people occupying all those lovely rooms are NOT going to be spending ALL their time (and money) inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  They ARE going to visit the rest of Hollywood Studios and the other three parks.  They won’t be able to resist the MAGIC. We have all known it for years…The magic of Disney is irresistible.  They will attracted to a particular character or attraction and they will visit a park “just for a little while to check it out” and twelve hours later, they’ll still be there.  It’s happened to all of us.  It’s the magic of Disney.  And what it means is that crowd volumes won’t just rise in Hollywood Studios for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge…they will rise EVERYWHERE.

There simply will be no more “lighter crowd” periods, I suspect.  Of course, I could be wrong.  But Disney is adding capacity for thousands of additional hotel rooms.  THOUSANDS.  And Disney resorts, for the most part, tend to stay at 80% or better capacity most of the time–and they usually don’t have to work too hard to do it.

Bottom line: Unless you are a fan of wall to wall crowds, you may want to plan a visit for this year just to bask in the glory of what will soon be fond memories of “normal” crowds and the “good old days”.

I trust Disney, and I am sure they have lots of creative ideas up their sleeve to help with crowd management…but I also know the reality is that “if you build it, they will come”…and Disney has built it, and THEY are COMING. 😉 So visit this year if you can…before they get here!

Special Celebrations

This year features several new limited time celebrations you won’t want to miss.  First up: Mickey and Minnie’s Surprise Celebration.  This begins January 18, 2019 and finds Mickey and Minnie at the Magic Kingdom wearing their fabulous new 90th birthday outfits.  The “Move It! Shake! MousekeDance It! Street Party” has been updated for the celebration, and Magic Kingdom will feature new merchandise and specialty food and beverages in honor of our favorite duo.  You’ll also be able to meet both Minnie and Mickey together, in their birthday outfits, at the Town Square Theatre! I’m a sucker for Mickey and Minnie together, so this is a MUST DO for me!

Disney’s Hollywood Studios turns 30!  This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Disney’s Hollywood Studios (though it was originally called MGM Studios, and was conceptually quite different than the park we have today…sigh), and Disney is planning to honor this anniversary all year with a special logo and of course, special anniversary merchandise.  There will also be a new “Party with Pixar Pals” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios starting January 18, 2019, where you can celebrate the 30th Anniversary with the Incredibles at a Dance Party–and you’ll be able to meet Edna Mode, as well as other Pixar favorites, like Mike and Sully from Monsters, Inc. and Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie from Toy Story.

The Lion King turns 25 this year, and not only do we have the new live action movie to look forward to, we have a 25th anniversary celebration happening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, starting January 18, 2019.  Rafiki and Timon will lead guests in dances and games during the Hakuna Makata Time Dance Party on Discovery Island.

Farewell to Illuminations

If you are a fan of Epcot’s long running nighttime show, Illuminations: Reflections of Earth (It’s been running since October 1999!), it is scheduled to end sometime during the second half of 2019.  We don’t have a final performance date yet; hopefully Disney will give us some advance warning before this beloved show goes dark–but if you want to see it one last time, don’t wait too long–you won’t be able to see it in 2020.

Disney will of course be presenting a new nighttime show at Epcot, but we do not have any information about the new show yet.

This one is pretty tough for me.  Frank and I love Illuminations, and on our wedding day, we hosted a dessert party for our guests so that everyone could watch it together.  It was really magical and is a memory I will never forget… I am definitely sad that this show will be no more.

New Attractions

Believe it or not, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is not the ONLY new thing on the horizon.  There are some other really big things coming, especially if you look ahead to 2021 and 2022.  (Guardians of the Galaxy and Tron roller coasters, a Ratatouille attraction…lots of good stuff ahead…)

But there are some exciting things happening THIS year, too!

At Disney Springs, there is a new restaurant coming. (Ok, that’s not necessarily an attraction unless you’re a foodie, but I’m excited about it, so I’m sharing).  It’s called “Jaleo”.  It is coming to us from Chef Jose Andres and will bring the flavors of Spain.  The new restaurant will feature Spanish tapas style food and a lively atmosphere.  Sounds like a winner to me!

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is opening later this year at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  This is officially the first EVER ride through attraction featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse.  I’m not sure how I feel about this one, but I’m hopeful.

It’s replacing the Great Movie Ride, which has left a GIANT hole in my heart, but the Studios really needs another attraction, and I’m hoping it will be cheerful and fun and that kids will love it.

Also at Hollywood Studios this spring, Lightning McQueen is bringing his new “Racing Academy to town this spring.  This will be a show featuring Lightning McQueen, and will hopefully be lots of fun for CARS fans.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is also getting a new cinematic nighttime experience…hopefully to put a little Hollywood back into the studios.  This show is also part of the anniversary celebration, and will begin on the actual anniversary date, May 1, 2019.  It’s called “Wonderful World of Animation” and uses technology to take us through 90 years of animation–back to where it all started…with a mouse.

I’m pretty excited about this show.  I saw the special Star Wars show last May 4th (may the fourth be with you) and was BLOWN away by what Disney did with technology.  Hopefully they are breaking more new ground with this Animation show.

Disney Skyliner: I’m not sure this REALLY counts as an attraction as it’s considered “transportation”, but it should!  (In my opinion, anyway!)  I am SO excited to see these gondolas in action.  What an amazing way to move from the Studios to Epcot!  As a reminder, we don’t have a concrete opening date yet; all we know is “Fall“.   Gondolas have been seen on site at construction locations and we’ve heard that preliminary testing of the cables is happening.  It’s all very exciting.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Disney World in 2019

So there you have them: my top 5 reasons to visit Disney World in 2019.  I actually have a much longer list, and had a difficult time paring it down!  To summarize: if you CAN visit in 2019, I highly recommend it.  Ticket prices are going to be climbing in the coming years.  Make your reservations for travel this year before ticket prices rise.

Keep Calm and Call Your Travel Agent

Crowds are going to be lighter in 2019 than they will be for the foreseeable future.  Once Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens up, crowd levels are likely to set new records.  I suspect those crowd levels will stay high for many years to come.

There are quite a few special celebrations happening this year.  Most celebrations are starting in January and will continue throughout the year.  Visit this year to enjoy these limited 2019 celebrations.

Epcot’s Illuminations: Reflections of Earth is ending later this year.  2019 is definitely your last opportunity to see this show if you love it.  We don’t have a final end date yet; however, Disney has confirmed the show will end in the second half of 2019.

And finally, there are several new attractions opening in 2019.  Don’t you want to be among the first to check out these new attractions?

Disney After Hours Events

The good news?  Disney has recognized that the near constant high volume of crowds has dampened some fans’ enthusiasm for Disney’s beloved theme parks.  Over the last couple of years, Disney has piloted a few different ideas to offer visitors the opportunity to visit their favorite park or parks with significantly lower crowds, and the “After Hours” events seem to have won the battle, at least for the short term, as Disney has recently announced a slew of new Disney After Hours Events dates for 2019.

The bad news? Disney has also recognized that many fans are willing to pay a premium for that “lower crowd level” experience.  Based on Disney’s raging success with the Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Parties and Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Parties, Disney already had a fairly good idea that some guests would be willing to purchase an extra ticket to attend a “special event” at the Magic Kingdom–but they weren’t sure if that willingness would extend beyond special holiday themed parties or beyond the Magic Kingdom.

Last year, Disney tried several experimental “After Hours” events, with varying degrees of success.  Early reviews from attendees raved about the low crowd levels, and being able to walk on favorite rides (something I remember from the early days of the MVMCP and MNSSHP, too) and taking pictures of an almost empty park near the end of the night… But those events were very limited, not publicized a great deal, and in many cases, priced significantly lower than these new offerings.

In the current round of After Hours events, there are dates scheduled through April 2019, and events are being held at three of the four theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

The Bottom Line: What Does An After Hours Event Cost?

Tickets for each Disney After Hours Event are $125 per person + tax if purchased in advance.  Tickets purchased the day of the event will be $129 per person + tax.  Discounts are available for Annual Passholders and DVC Members.  Contact me for more information.

Technically, this is officially a three hour event.  The event begins when the regular park day “ends” and runs for three hours after that.  Guests without After Hours event tickets will not be permitted to enjoy the After Hours events or attractions.

What’s Included in my Disney After Hours Event Ticket?

There is some really good news about these events, in addition to the lower crowds and easy access to your favorite rides.

  1. Ice Cream, popcorn and select beverages are included in your Disney After Hours Event Ticket.  (Most likely “beverages” is limited to soft drinks).
  2. Your After Hours event ticket will grant you access to the park where your event takes place as early as 7 pm–so if your park “closes” at 11 pm that day, that’s an extra four hours of park time you’ll be able to enjoy on your park ticket, in addition to the three hours of “After Hours” event time.  BUT, there are some event days where the park closes at 8 pm, so you’ll only be getting 1 extra hour.  It’s important to consider the total amount of time you’ll have in the park when determining if this ticket will have value for you and your family.
  3. Character Greetings with little or no lines!  If you are a person who enjoys Character Greetings, but hates sacrificing valuable park time to stand in lines for Characters, you may really enjoy the short lines or no lines to be found at the Character Greetings at After Hours events.
  4. There are usually some “special” After Hours “experiences, including Dance Parties, unique Character Greetings or Streetmosphere.
  5. Some quick service places will be open during each party, so you will have some options for late night dining if you are so inclined.
  6. Generally speaking as these events run pretty late into the night, there will be fewer very young children and strollers in the mix.  These events are not being actively marketed as adults only, but there are no discounts for children ages 3-9, which is a fairly good indicator that Disney does not expect much participation from that age group.
  7. With some proper planning, you can sleep in the day of the event and have a mostly “lazy day” and not spend a “park ticket” day on the day of the event, enter the park at 7 pm and stay until the party ends to maximize your value.  If you’re an annual passholder, this doesn’t really help, but if you’re purchasing park passes or a package, you could theoretically, reduce your ticket package by one day.
  8. If you are someone who struggles with large crowds or too much overstimulation from all the noise associated with the crazy mid day crowds, you may discover the later night lighter crowds are much more comfortable for you.

What Dates Are Available?

Animal Kingdom: January 8, 16, 22 and 31, 2019; and February 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 26, 2019; and March 5, 20 and 27, 2019; and April 3, 2019.

Magic Kingdom: The event takes place from 10:00 PM to 1:00 AM on the following dates: March 21 and 28, 2019; and April 4 and 11, 2019.

The event takes place from 9:00 PM to midnight on the following dates: February 14 and 21, 2019 and March 7, 2019.

The event takes place from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM on the following dates:  January 7, 17, 24, and 28, 2019; February 7 and 28, 2019.

Hollywood Studios: January 5, 12 and 19, 2019; February 2, 9 and 16, 2019; March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 2019; and April 6 and 13, 2019.

Disney After Hours Events: Are They Worth It?

Short answer?  It depends.  You’ve heard me say it before, and I’m sure you will hear me say it again–everything is relative, based on what is important to you and your family or travel group.  It also depends on your financial situation, and what kind of park ticket or vacation package you’ve purchased.

For me personally, lower crowds and shorter lines are becoming a higher priority.  Having a day to sleep late on vacation?  That might also be a nice change.  I’m not sure it’s worth $125, though.

I love the idea of getting more pictures without hundreds of strangers in them, especially for the blog.  And I would like to attend a couple of parties as the year goes on to see what changes Disney makes.  I’m just not sure 3 hours is enough time to really justify the expense.  I feel that three hours with light crowds is probably enough time (although for me personally…10 hours would probably never be enough, much to my poor husband’s chagrin!), but I think $125 is a pretty high price for three hours.  Of course, that’s probably the point.  If it was affordable for everyone, you wouldn’t have the lighter crowds and shorter lines they’re promising.  So they don’t WANT to sell this to everyone.  They want to sell this to a few thousand people for each party and that’s it.

I think for me personally, it would be worth it.  At least so I can report back to all of you! 😉

Favorite Nighttime Entertainment?

Do you have a favorite nighttime show that you MUST SEE every trip?  For Frank and I, it was always Wishes.  While we enjoy Happily Ever After a lot, I’m not having quite the same emotional response to it that I used to have with Wishes…but I suspect that may come in time…Happily Ever After is SO spectacular and there is SO much going on…I think my brain stays super active, and my heart just doesn’t have time to catch up!

I also have a soft spot for Illuminations: Reflections of Earth, and am sad that I most likely won’t be seeing it before that show is over forever to make way for whatever the next extravaganza will be…

I have seen Rivers of Light at Animal Kingdom several times now, and I really like it.  It’s different from the other shows, but really pretty.

And of course, Fantasmic.  I’ve always loved that one…but it occurs to me I haven’t made time for it in a few years….Hmmmm….Maybe next trip….

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party: Is it Worth it?

Here we are in October….Fall is here and it’s Halloween time.  Of course, at Disney, Halloween time is starting earlier and earlier every year.  This year, it began in AUGUST.  They decorated for fall and Halloween early in the 2nd week of August and the first Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween party was August 17th this year!  I’m sorry, I just can’t get in the mood for Halloween when I’m still hoping for beach and pool time, Disney or no Disney!

This is one of my favorite videos: it shows Walt Disney World getting ready for Halloween VERY quickly.  This particular transformation is from last year, but they follow pretty much the same process every year.  It’s short, but I think it’s kind of amazing how quickly Disney can make magic overnight….Take a look….

The video HELPS with the Halloween mood, but I still just couldn’t get in the mood until the weather here in the Midwest started to cool off and October showed up.  I realize that it’s still in the 80’s and 90’s in Florida, and that will continue for a few more weeks (or more)–but for us here in Chicago, October means cooler temperatures, leaves changing color, windy and often rainy days…so I tend to associate those things with Halloween.

So even though a few weeks of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween parties (MNSSHP) have already taken place, I just couldn’t bring myself to post about this year’s party until now.

And really, many of you are starting to think about next year’s vacation plans, and you may be considering a trip for next fall.  September and October can be a wonderful time to visit Walt Disney World–kids have gone back to school, and while there are a couple three day weekends here and there, any family vacations planned during this time will require pulling kids out of school, at least for a day or two, and many families can’t make that work.  This CAN translate to lighter crowds than you might see at other times of the year.

If the fall is an option for your family, you could be considering MNSSHP.   With ticket prices starting at $85 and climbing as high as $125 for parties at the end of October, you may be asking yourself….$100+?????  Is it worth it???

That’s the big question, right?  And unfortunately, as ticket prices keep climbing every year, and the number of tickets they sell for the parties appears to keep climbing as well, that question is getting harder and harder to answer.

A few years ago, I would have told you, ABSOLUTELY, YES!  I would not have even thought twice.  I would have said, “If you have the time and the funds, plan on attending the party.” In those days, the tickets maxed out around $70…and Disney carefully capped the crowds to keep the parties feeling very much like a special “privileged” VIP event.  Don’t get me wrong; there were definitely lots of people, especially for “sold out” parties; however, these days, “sold out” is much closer to peak park attendance and borders on unpleasant, at least in my opinion.

What this means is that it’s not the automatic ABSOLUTELY YES that it used to be.  Now, it’s more important to really think about whether this is a value for you and your travel group.  Does this make sense for you?

Let’s take a look at the basics first.

What are you getting for the price of your ticket?

  • Access to the Magic Kingdom with your party ticket as early as 4 p.m., until the party ends at Midnight.  Note: the party doesn’t actually begin until 7 p.m.–however, if you really want to maximize the value of your party ticket, do NOT use a park pass day to visit any parks on party day.  Make it a relaxing day.  Enjoy the resort, or plan the party for your travel day.  Get to the Magic Kingdom in time to enter the park at 4 p.m., so you can play a little  and perhaps eat dinner before the party begins.   Bonus: If you’ve managed to have a restful day, you’re much more likely to have energy to enjoy the whole party–right through until the end–Midnight.  If you’re likely to be wiped out by 9:30 p.m., most likely you won’t feel like you got a good value for your $100.
  • Boo to You Parade:  The Boo to You Parade is ONLY offered during MNSSHP.  It’s offered twice a night, and a lot of people with little kids tend to clear out after the first parade.  I usually recommend hitting the second parade…While lots of people are watching the first parade, you will likely find shorter lines for attractions and character greetings.  In my opinion, the Boo to You Parade is a really great parade.  If the weather is good, you usually get to see the Headless Horseman riding along the parade route shortly before the parade begins…it’s eerie and awesome.  The parade is fun, and there are lots of things you don’t normally get to see.  Having said that–if you have been to these parties a couple of times, the parade doesn’t change.  It doesn’t get updated, it hasn’t changed in several years.  I love it, but it alone is not worth the price of the ticket, especially if you’ve seen it before.

  • Characters in Costume:  One of my favorite things about MNSSHP is that you get to see the characters in their Halloween costumes.  I really enjoy seeing Minnie in her Witch outfit or Daisy as a princess and Donald as her knight….Some years there is some variety in the costumes, but reviewing pictures from the last few years, it seems that many character costumes get repeated.  Regardless, it’s still a lot of fun.

  • Special Character Greetings: MNSSHP is especially fun if you love character greetings, because often, there are characters available for character greetings during the Halloween party that you would never get to see otherwise.  For example, this year’s party features Anastasia and Drizella (Cinderella’s stepsisters), Cruella DeVil, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the Queen of Hearts, Jack Skellington and Sally, the Gravediggers, Brer Rabit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear, Moana, Jafar, Tarzan, Jane, Terk, Elvis Stitch, Lotso (Toy Story 3), the Seven Dwarfs, Alice and the Mad Hatter, among others.  You’ll also find a lot of your regular favorites in their Halloween costumes, like Goofy, Minnie, Daisy, Donald, Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger.  And of course you can still find all your favorite princesses at Princess Fairy Tale Hall.

One caveat to consider:  As both parties and character greetings have become more popular, the lines have gotten longer and longer for many of the more popular “unique” characters at these parties.  If that picture with the Seven Dwarfs or Jack & Sally is your holy grail, you may need to plan your entire party experience around it, getting in line extra early, and being prepared to WAIT.  Last time I went to MNSSHP, we saw lines for some of the most popular characters that exceeded 90 minutes.  These parties are only five hours long, and that if you stay until midnight, so you do have to prioritize what you REALLY want to do.

 

  • HalloWishes:  What would an evening at the Magic Kingdom be without fireworks?  MNSSHP is no exception.  Usually at 9 or 9:30 p.m. (check the schedule for the night of your party), Disney will present HalloWishes, a spectacular Villains themed fireworks spectacular…and it is really terrific.  And again, it is something you can only see if you’re at the party.  Or having dinner at Narcoosee’s at the Grand Floridian during a party.  Or at the California Grill at the Contemporary Resort.  Or on the beach at the Polynesian Resort.  Or on your Magic Kingdom facing balcony at Bay Lake Tower.  But I digress.  Honestly, while all those locations outside the park are great ways to watch Disney fireworks and get a different perspective, there is nothing like BEING in the park during one of the shows to really be WOWED.  And HalloWishes is a WOW show.  At least for me personally.  But I’m a big fan of Disney fireworks shows, especially all the incarnations that have been at Magic Kingdom.  This is another show that has remained the same for many years.  I still love it, I still think it adds a lot of value to the party, but I know there are those that say that if you’ve seen it a few times, it might not be worth the ticket price anymore. Or that it might be wiser to squeeze in another character greeting or attraction instead of watching HalloWishes.

  • Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular: This is a very popular stage show that was new for the 2015 MNSSHP, based on the very popular Disney “cult classic” 1993 film staring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy.  While the movie basically bombed when it originally came out, it has become a revered Halloween seasonal favorite for many as the years have gone on, thanks to frequent cable and network airings.  The Castle Mainstage productions are always very popular at these parties; the shows are usually 20 – 25 minutes long, and generally fairly crowded.  This one has been more positively received that the two Villain themed shows that preceded it…but it has the same idea at it’s heart…bring as many favorite villains on to the stage as possible as Halloween is the time when the villains get to rule the night…It’s a great chance to get pictures of villains you may not see very often.

  • Scream-o-Ween Dance Party: These dance parties are fairly hilarious…this one is in Tomorrowland, and includes Mike, Sully and Boo.  They try to get everyone dancing and usually, it’s the littlest kids that are the most fun to watch.
  • Trick or Treating: There are several candy stations set up throughout the park, so you can take you trick or treat bag to each station (wait in line) and get your “free” candy.  For me personally, these are kind of a waste of time.  The candy is usually not great–it’s whoever donated it that year–there’s almost never any chocolate (probably smart in the Florida heat and humidity…but come on!  Halloween without Hershey kisses or mini-candy bars???  It’s a crime!!)  Anyways, it’s usually odd flavored hard candy or other strange things–I don’t know, I haven’t been too impressed with this element of the parties.  I think if you have little kids that LOVE to trick or treat, they might get a kick out of it, but the lines were so long at the last party we went to, it just was not any fun.
  • Cadaver Dans Barbershop Quartet:  Sure you can see the “Dapper” Dans any old day at the Magic Kingdom, and they are terrific….but you can only find the “Cadaver Dans” at MNSSHP.  These guys perform in Frontierland try to kill you with laughter…or something like that.  They’re pretty fun if you catch them.

  • Special Treats: There are special food items and treats that are only for sale during MNSSHP.  Note: If any of these items turn out to be REALLY popular, you may see them show up on a regular menu or kiosk in the future…sometimes the parties are a bit of a testing ground for new items.  Or a “special” themed cupcake that’s only for the party will end up being sold during the day throughout October.  So take the “only for sale during the party” idea with a grain of salt.  This year’s “special treats” include: Pumpkin Cheesecake (Main Street Bakery), Hades Nachos (Pecos Bill’s), Worms and Dirt (Pecos Bill’s), Zero Waffle Sundae (Sleepy Hollow), Jack Skellington Cake Push Pop (Sleepy Hollow), Madame Leota Dessert (Liberty Square Market), Hitchhiking Ghost Dessert (Aloha Isle), Oogie Boogie Meringue (Gaston’s Tavern), and the Muenster Smash Burger (Cosmic Ray’s).

  • Special Party Only Merchandise: There is special merchandise that is only available during MNSSHP.  And they are NOT kidding with this one.  The stuff comes out at 7 p.m. (or a little before) and you cannot buy it without a party ticket.  AND once it’s gone, apparently, it’s gone.  I have been disappointed a few times by having my heart set on a particular pin or shirt, only to find it was sold out by the time I got to a party (or was ready to buy at the end of the night).  This year’s special party only merchandise includes a limited edition Magic Band, party themed pins, special passholder only pins, and a villains themed pin set; party themed shirts and an ear ornament, themed to the party.  There is also a line of products themed to the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular, including a mug, tote bag, shirt and collectibles.  Some items are special for passholders only.  There’s also a line of “Hocus Pocus Costume” t-shirts designed to “sub” for a costume–and again, only available at the Party.   The “party only” merchandise has always been a big draw for me for these events I’m not gonna lie.  I’m a shopper.  There’s no getting around it.  If the party’s at the beginning of your trip, take advantage of package delivery, and have your purchases delivered to your resort for free.   Then you don’t have to lug them around the party all night.  A word of warning:  Buy it when you see if the first time if you want it….or risk dragging your poor husband through every shop in the park as the park is closing to find that exact special party only item you HAVE to have that you didn’t buy when you saw it earlier in the evening…not that I know anything about that, of course.

  • Shorter lines for popular attractions due to smaller crowds:  This one is getting a little more questionable as Disney is selling more tickets for these parties, and the parties are becoming more crowded.  Generally, the idea is that because the park is closed to day guests, and the number of party attendees is “much less” than a typical “crowded” park day, the attraction lines are shorter.  However, the same thing happens during the party that happens during the day: people gravitate to the most popular attractions, so some queues for less popular rides are walk ons, and there will be long lines at popular attractions.  The line might be 60 minutes instead of the 150 minutes you might see during a typical crowded afternoon, but during a short 5 hour party….you have to decide how much time you are willing to wait in line, especially if you know you may be able to ride these same attractions later in your trip.  It does get better later in the evening, especially after the first Boo to You parade is over, and even more so after the fireworks.  The last two hours are usually pretty good for both character greetings and attractions, unless the party is VERY crowded, with obvious exceptions being VERY popular character greetings (like Jack & Sally) and attractions (like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train).
  • Exclusive Photopass “Magic Shots”: there are special magic shots that Photopass photographers can only do during MNSSHP.  If you’ve been reading my blog for long, you probably already know that I am a NUT for photos, so the special magic shots are a real seller for me, especially because they really weren’t doing these a few years ago…this is one of the areas where the parties have started offering MORE, instead of less.  This year, there are a number of special magic shot opportunities, according to the Disney Parks Blog.  There are a couple shots on Main Streets where your party will be joined by some mysterious “ghostly” visitors.  At the entrance of the Magic Kingdom, you can get a great shot where the headless horseman joins your family.  There’s a scary glowing pumpkin shot that mimics the traditional “Tinkerbell” in your palm photo…that one looks pretty cool.  Over near the Haunted Mansion, you can hitchhike with some friends, take a ride in a ghost driven hearse, and perhaps meet a very famous HatBox Ghost.  The ghostly ones are my favorites, and I’m excited to see so many new ones have popped up.

And there’s one more “hidden” benefit, that’s not TECHNICALLY included in your party ticket, but tends to be one of the BEST parts of attending a MNSSHP: seeing all the guests that come to the party in costume!  Costume regulations and rules have gotten a lot more strict in the last couple of years due to safety concerns, so this isn’t QUITE as much fun as it used to be, but it is still a heck of a lot of fun.  I’ve been surprised at how many guests dress up in costume.  Some go VERY elaborate–others go pretty casual and easy with it, but it’s so much fun to see what everyone has thought of!  And it’s even more fun to plan a costume for yourself or a group theme for your whole family or travel group….Just keep in mind the warm temperatures.  You do NOT want to spend the evening melting in your costume…and be sure to review Disney’s costume guidelines here.

So we come back to the original question: Is it worth it?

Some things I suggest you consider:

  • Have you ever been to a Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party before?  If not, I think you should probably put a point in the YES column.  It’s definitely something everyone should do at least once, if they have the opportunity and means.
  • Do you like Halloween?  Let’s face it, if you are NOT a Halloween person, don’t like it when people dress up, don’t see the point of trick or treating and don’t enjoy scary movies (even funny/scary)…You probably should just give MNSSHP a pass.  It’s just not your cup of tea.  However, if you LOVE Halloween, love getting dressed up, LOVE all things ghostly and pumpkin related…you may want to put another point in the YES column.

  • Can you plan the party attendance into your trip so that a) you don’t spend the whole day in another park and get worn out b) you are able to be in costume, ready to start your evening, at Magic Kingdom, at 4 p.m. (or 5 at the latest?) c) feel like you are likely to be able to enjoy the whole party, all the way through until Midnight? and d) deal with the impact that late night will have on the NEXT day–can that day be a rest day?  Or a water park day that starts at 10 instead of 7?  If all these answers are yes, that’s another point for the Yes column.  If all are NO, then you may want to pass on the party.  If you come down more mixed up, you probably need to do some careful thinking.
  • Do things like special merchandise, special food, special photopass magic shots ONLY available tat the party matter to you?  If they’re important, put a point in the YES column.  If you could care less, that’s a point in the No column.

  • How do you feel about parades?  If you love the idea of a unique, nighttime parade featuring characters you don’t often get to seem, put a point in the YES column.  If you really don’t enjoy parades, hate having to find a place to sit or stand to watch the parade, get annoyed with the crowds, etc., that’s a point for the NO column.
  • How do you feel about fireworks?  If you are a fireworks fiend, put a point in the Yes column.  If you don’t care about them, or strongly prefer to avoid them, that’s another check in the NO column.

  • Where do you land on special Character greetings?  Are they important to you?  If so, that’s another Yes vote.  If you can’t be bothered, that’s a big NO.
  • How many people in your group?  What are their ages?  There are a couple of reasons to look at this.  For two adults, it’s a lot easier to move around the party and avoid crowds, moving quickly and adapting the plan as needed.  For two adults and two kids in strollers, it gets more difficult to move through crowds, and the priorities are doing things that will make the kids happy.  Skipping the trick or treat stations may not be an option.  Staying until midnight may not be something you want to do.   You need to plan ahead for parade and show seating, which will eat up some of your time from attractions, character greetings or trick or treating, so you’ll need to consider your priorities.  For three adults, a six year old and two teens, there are still more things to consider.  Do you want to stay together the whole time?  Split up for part of it?  Does everyone have the same interests?  Do you want to focus on the shows and parade, or rides and character greetings?  Think about the group you would bring to the party.  Consider whether they would enjoy it, and whether you would enjoy it with them.  If the answer is yes, then that’s more points in the YES column.  If you’re not sure, you’ve got some more thinking to do.

  • Can you afford it?  This is REALLY the big question.  A Disney vacation is an investment.  For many of us, it’s something we have budgeted for, and planned for and saved for.  You have to consider your budget.  Realistically, can you afford the tickets for the party for your group?  Will it put a dent in your food budget or your souvenir budget?  Or, since you are doing the party one day, could you buy 1 day less on your Magic Your Way tickets, and make up some savings that way?  Could that make it work for you?  I know not everyone needs to worry about these matters.  For some people, budget it not a concern.  If money is no object, and you want to go to the party for 2-5 hours, go for it.  It’s a fun time, with lots of unique experiences.  But for those of us who are more budget conscious, it usually means a trade off.  What do I have to give up, if I buy these tickets?  So give that some thought, and make sure you are comfortable with your choice.
  • Consider the value:  If you pay $100 for your party ticket (less if you go in August or September, more if you go closer to Halloween), and you attend the party from 7 p.m. – 12 p.m., you’re spending $20 per hour for the party.  Think about all the things available at the party, and recognize you will not be able to do all of them.  Think about the things that would be most important to you and your travel group, and imagine that with proper planning you’ll be able to do at least most of them.  Would you feel like you got $20 per hour worth of value for each person?  Would you feel good about your investment?   If you enter the park at 4 pm, you’ve added a couple hours to your park time, and now you’re spending $12.50 an hour.  Conversely, if you leave at 10 p.m. and arrived at 7 p.m., you’ve spent $33.33 an hour.  You are the only one that can determine the right value for you and your family or travel group.

Do I still think the parties are worth it?  Mostly.  It’s hard, because I struggle a little bit with that “good old days” thing.  They used to not be so crowded.  They used to be more affordable.  They used to have this.  They sometimes had that.  Blah blah blah.  But time marches on, and we live in the here and now.

Today, given what we are hearing about the crowds and the lines, is it still worth it? For me personally, it’s probably still yes.  It’s not as strong a yes as it used to be, and I’d try to stay a lot closer to that $80 than the $100.  If I really wanted to attend, I would spend some extra time planning and try and choose a night that would hopefully not be sold out or super crowded.  I would choose a night earlier in the season when prices are lower, and I would take advantage of whatever discounts I could.  I would probably plan my night pretty carefully to make sure I could maximize the things that are important to me and my group.  But gosh…when you sit down and think about all that you can see and do in 5 hours, all the options available…it’s hard to imagine NOT finding $20 per hour worth of value in that….for me personally.  But that’s me.

I love the parade, I love the fireworks, I love the shows, and the silly dance parties and seeing everyone all dressed up.  I love the special merchandise and the silly special food items, and the Haunted Horseman.  I love the characters that wander around, talking to guests, that you don’t have to wait in line for, that you might just bump into.  I love the different lighting and music that plays during the parties.  I love the festive mood of the parties.  I love watching little kids’ faces when they see the gravediggers making sparks on the street with their shovels during the parade, or when they see Mickey and Minnie in their Halloween finery.

You have to think about what you love.  And what’s important for your vacation.  Your group.  And your budget.  And then of course you have to think about the magic and the memories you want to bring home from your trip.  And if it makes sense for you and your group, go for it.

The bottom line: you’ll have lots of amazing moments throughout your trip, whether you go to the party or not.  Come on, it’s DISNEY!  You KNOW it will be magical!
