Disney PhotoPass: What is it and How Does it Work?

Today we are going to talk about Disney PhotoPass, and Disney’s Memory Maker product.

Disney PhotoPass and Disney Memory Maker

One question I get asked a lot from my clients and friends and family is “Should we purchase the Memory Maker?” The short answer? It depends.

Ok, for me, it’s pretty much always YES. BUT, I’m a HUGE photo nerd.

For more NORMAL people, there are several things to consider, and I will get to those in tomorrow’s video. Today we are going to start with the basics: What is Disney PhotoPass and how does it work? In tomorrow’s video (Part 2 in this series), we will focus on the memory maker product, and will answer the question of whether or not to buy.

But first for those of you that DON’T know, let’s start with:

What is Disney PhotoPass?

Disney PhotoPass is a service that Disney added years ago, and I think it’s absolute GENIUS. Basically, they have photographers stationed at numerous locations around each park to take pictures of you and your group.

This completely solves the “Did Mom even GO on that vacation? She’s not in ANY of the pictures” dilemma. For many families, there is always one person that takes all the pictures and they are never in any of the shots. Or, people rotate who takes the pictures, but there are never any pictures of EVERYONE together, because one person always steps out to take the picture. Most people don’t carry around tripods and take the time to set up timed tripod shots on vacation. For some, Selfies have helped to address this problem, but with a Selfie, it’s still really tough to get a group or to include people AND a landmark in the picture.

With PhotoPass, Disney has solved that problem. Basically, the PhotoPass photographer will take your group’s picture, usually with a park icon or landmark in the background, and then they will either scan your magic band (the easiest) or give you a PhotoPass card with a 16-digit number on the back. Note: If you are given a Photopass card, immediately take a picture of the back of the card just in case. If you lose the card, but have the number, you can still locate your pictures.

Not All PhotoPass Photos are Created Equal

A couple of caveats: The skill of the various photopass photographers varies. Some are very experienced, fun to work with, and very talented. Others are more point and click—with varying degrees of success. Therefore I always recommend that you get a LOT of photopass photos taken. Take advantage of the opportunities whenever they present themselves. Odds are, if you take a BUNCH of photopass pictures, you end up with at least a few you really like. Here are a couple examples of PhotoPass pictures that didn’t really work out so well.

In NON COVID times, you could also ask the photographer to take a picture of your group with your phone or camera. This is not an option currently due to Covid related restrictions, but I’m assuming this option will return at some point in the future—but current rules prohibit the photographers from touching your phone or camera.

Disney PhotoPass and Special Moments

If you look on Facebook or the internet, you will see THOUSANDS of PhotoPass pictures that people have posted. There are tons of examples of people using PhotoPass to announce they have a baby on the way, the sex of the baby, that they got engaged or married.

In our case, my husband proposed to me at the Magic Kingdom after the fireworks. Because he’s brilliant, he surprised me with the proposal when we went to take a PhotoPass picture, so we have the moment captured forever.

Are they great pictures? No, it was very crowded, and I at first thought he fell (he’d done the marathon the day before and was in a lot of pain), and then there was lots of crying and laughing. But I feel so lucky that I have that moment forever captured by that PhotoPass photographer. And the next day, we found another PhotoPass photographer that was SO excited about our engagement, she spent TONS of time with us (there was no line,I promise) and took a gazillion pictures of the ring, and the two of us. It was really fun.

Disney PhotoPass and Group Attractions

There are normally even photopass photographers at big group attractions (Enchanted Tales with Belle, for example). These attractions aren’t operating right now, but once they return, I’m sure the PhotoPass photographer will return with them.

The PhotoPass photographer takes lots of pictures of the group and they will hand out PhotoPass cards at the end; once you enter the number on your computer, you’ll have access to ALL the pictures they took during that particular event. If your kid had a role in the show, you do NOT want to lose that number! So take a picture of the back of the card, just in case!

Disney PhotoPass and Attraction Photos!

Lots of Disney rides take your picture at some point during the ride, some rides even take video! These pictures and videos are now PhotoPass pictures, and can be attached to your Magic Band or PhotoPass card. The RFID technology in your MagicBand communicates with the reader at the attraction and automatically adds the photos or videos to your account.

Character Dining and PhotoPass?

Character dining can also (sometimes) include PhotoPass. Granted, right now, character dining isn’t happening, but it WILL return eventually, I promise! Some character dining meals offer PhotoPass pictures, but not all of them. Also IF there is a PhotoPass photographer at a character meal, it will usually just be for a picture you take before you enter the restaurant. For example, if you are dining at a Character Meal at Cinderella’s Royal Table, there is usually a Photopass photographer in the lobby with Cinderella waiting to take your picture before you head upstairs for your meal. (Please note that Cinderella’s Royal Table HAS reopened for lunch and dinner, however, Cinderella has NOT yet returned.)

PhotoPass photographers do not go around with the characters as they visit your table at ANY character meal, so ALWAYS bring your camera to character meals.

Customize your Photos!

After your trip, you will be able to visit the PhotoPass website to view all your pictures. You can add borders and stickers to the photos, and you can make products like Photobooks, calendars and mugs featuring your pictures on the Disney PhotoPass website. One picture can easily turn into 10 or 15 by the time you are done playing with borders, cropping, black and white, etc. Some borders are unique to particular locations, seasons, or events, adding a little extra magic to those photos.

NOTE: Pictures are only available on the PhotoPass site for 30 days (unless you are an Annual Passholder.) Right now, if you are visiting this fall between October 15 and November 30, Disney is extending that 30 days through the end of the year. So you’ll have a little extra time to play with your pictures.

Magic Shots

Lets talk about Magic Shot. Magic Shots are pictures taken by a PhotoPass photographer with a little something extra magical added later. The most common Magic Shots feature TinkerBell standing on the palm of your hand, or a bunch of balloons added to your upstretched arm.

There are a variety of Magic Shots available at different times. During Star Wars Weekend a few years ago, we got Magic Shots with light sabers added. Recently, they added some pirate themed Magic Shots near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

During the Halloween season, you might find Magic Shots with ghosts near the haunted mansion, or Flaming jack o lanterns throughout the Magic Kingdom. During the Winter holiday season, you may find snow or Wooden Soldiers added to your photos.

Over at Hollywood Studios, we’ve learned there’s a new special magic shot that includes the child (frequently called baby Yoda, although he isn’t in fact Yoda) from the Mandolorian. Here’s a look at this one from Disney Parks and Resorts.

Special holiday themed magic shots become available November 6.

Disney PhotoPass Photos and the My Disney Experience App

Disney PhotoPass pictures are available in the My Disney Experience app, so you’ll be able to look at them as your trip goes along. Most photos and videos appear in your app within 20 minutes.

Unless you’ve purchased the Memory Maker product, the pictures will have a watermark on them, preventing you from having a sharable, downloadable image without paying for it. If you’ve already purchased Memory Maker, your pictures will appear completely clear and fabulous.

One of the highlights of my last trip was overhearing a young family showing their daughter a picture they had just taken on Main Street. She was AMAZED to see that Tinkerbell had joined them in the picture and she was so dazzled by the magic!

Tips for Getting that “Magic” Shot

Disney changes what Magic Shots are available from time to time, and not all PhotoPass photographers will offer to do them. Your odds are better if there’s no line and if you’re nice and friendly. PhotoPass photographers work very hard, and are on their feet for many hours a day, usually in pretty hot temperatures and sometimes not treated very well by guests. In my experience, if you are nice and there’s not a line, they’re more likely to spend a few extra minutes with you, and that can often result in some Magic Shots. The Holidays have Arrived at Disney World!

Halloween is over and the Holidays have arrived at Walt Disney World! It’s amazing how quickly Disney makes the transition from Fall and Halloween décor to winter holiday décor.

Here is the full statement from Disney:

“Walt Disney World Resort offers a treasure trove of experiences for guests of all ages. We recognize that part of the magic of visiting any Disney park is seeing favorite Disney friends and discovering one-of-a-kind shows and performances. Since reopening, we’ve continued to offer modified character experiences and entertainment throughout our resort, while also taking the appropriate steps for the health and safety of our guests and cast members.

Recently, we’ve had to make some difficult decisions to reduce our workforce as the business impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic have become more long-lasting than anyone could have predicted. As a result, we’ve had to pause many live shows and entertainment experiences at our resort for longer than originally anticipated.

While it’s impossible at this time to fully replace the incredible entertainment that existed throughout our parks before the pandemic, we are offering live entertainment in new ways wherever possible, including character cavalcades in all four parks and pop-up appearances, like discovering Joy from “Inside Out” frolicking on the lawn near the Imagination! pavilion in EPCOT.

Additionally, we’re featuring modified shows such as the popular “For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and live musical performances like the Main Street Philharmonic in Magic Kingdom or the Discovery Island Drummers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This extends to our seasonal offerings, with Halloween underway and the holidays right around the corner. In fact, the fan-favorite Voices of Liberty are set to make their return and join the JAMMitors and Mariachi Cobre at the American Gardens Theatre during the upcoming Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays, beginning on Nov. 27.

Determining which shows can return and when is a complex process. As with the rest of our phased reopening, we will also consider the guidance of health officials and government agencies in determining when the time will be right to adjust capacity, and as soon as it is appropriate, we will start to bring additional entertainment back.

Like most of our fans, we know that our beloved entertainment cast are an incredibly special and essential part of the Disney experience. We look forward to the day when we can welcome back more live entertainment to our parks, and we will share more news about these announcements as we’re able to do so.”

Reactions

I find this statement both disappointing and frustrating. Do I understand that Disney feels they cannot allow most shows to resume due to social distancing requirements? Honestly? Yes and no. They have been able to re-introduce the Frozen Sing Along Celebration successfully, and that’s a show. And many of the theatres in the parks are outdoor venues. It seems that some shows could return, with seating clearly marked and restricted to provide proper social distancing.

To me, it seems almost convenient to blame the ongoing (and perhaps escalating) Covid-19 crisis as the reason there is almost no entertainment, rather than the more probably budget cuts. Why are the JAMMitors ok to perform in EPCOT on the Mill Stage in Canada, but not the amazing Taiko Matsuriza drummers in Japan?

Disney has also made a very important, very helpful change to the virtual queue situation. Now, guests who hope to ride Rise of the Resistance can request to enter the virtual queue at 7 am from their hotel room (or breakfast or wherever). The only thing that is required is a park reservation for Hollywood Studios that day (which of course requires a ticket).

Why does this change to the required location to join the virtual queue matter? Here’s why: OPTIONS. For example, let’s say you really want to ride Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. You have a park reservation for today, and you are planning to visit Hollywood Studios. Let’s say you try, but are unable to join the virtual queue and get a boarding group at 7am. Now, you have some OPTIONS.

- - You can go back to bed. You don’t need to make sure you are in Hollywood Studios by 10am.
  - Based on reservation availability, you could decide to save Hollywood Studios for a different day. In that scenario, you would cancel your Hollywood Studios park reservation. Then, you could book a new park reservation at a different park. (Note: I highly recommend you check park reservation availability before you pull this trigger.)
  - You might decide NOT to visit Hollywood Studios until the afternoon.
    - - Spend the morning playing at the pool
      - Enjoy a round of golf
      - Ride the Skyliner for a while
      - Relax at your resort
      - Visit Disney Springs

The 2 pm virtual queue does still exist. That virtual queue DOES require guests to be physically inside the park to join the queue.

It is my hope that these changes will loosen up the stranglehold that Rise of the Resistance has been having on visitors for months. With these changes, perhaps more guests will be able to ride. If that happens, theoretically fewer guests will crowd into Hollywood Studios in the hopes of riding that one attraction.

Next week, we will be at Walt Disney World ourselves, and will be able to test out the new system. I will update you on our success (or lack thereof) with Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

Entertainment Cast Layoffs

Our top Disney Parks News story this week is a sad one. We’ve learned that ALMOST ALL of Disney World “Entertainment” Cast Members around the theme parks have received their notice that they will not be returning to work. These layoffs are part of the 28,000 planned layoffs announced last month.

While most of the shows affected have remained dark since the parks reopened, these layoffs eliminate hopes of any of these shows returning to the parks ANY time in the near future. Our hearts go out to ALL the cast losing their jobs during this time. Many of the cast members have been with Disney for many, many years. This news has been devastating for them.

I find these entertainment layoffs particularly heartbreaking because it is the talented performers in the shows and the street actors that really add so much magic to Walt Disney World.

Which Parks and Shows were Affected?

Here’s a quick list all the entertainment that was hit by this round of layoffs (so far):

Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom lost the Citizens of Main Street and the entire cast and crew of Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor.

Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios was the hardest hit, losing the Citizens of Hollywood, the entire cast and crew of Beauty and the Beast–live on stage, the entire cast and crew of Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, the entire cast and crew of the Jedi Training Academy, the Green Army Men, and the entire cast and crew of the Voyage of the Little Mermaid.

You guys, this makes me want to cry!

Animal Kingdom

Over at Animal Kingdom, we lose the entire casts and crews of two of the most amazing shows on Disney property: Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo the Musical.

The cast members that drive the Pandora utility suit were also laid off.

EPCOT

EPCOT had already quietly laid off MOST of the World Showcase entertainment in the spring (and this continues to be a troubling decision), however they added some members of Voices of Liberty to the casualty list in this round of layoffs.

Resorts

Finally, the entire cast and crew of the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue over at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground has been laid off. You may also remember from previous news reports that the Grand Floridian Orchestra was also let go a few weeks ago.

Potential Impact of these Layoffs

Again, most of these cast members have been off since the parks closed in April. Nonetheless, I had high hopes that steps were being taken to bring at least some of this entertainment back on line in the coming weeks. These losses are heartbreaking.

Of course, this doesn’t have to mean that these layoffs will be permanent or that these shows will remain dark forever. Nonetheless, it certainly implies that these shows will remain dark for the foreseeable future. And these talented performers are likely to seek work elsewhere. The performers may not even be available when (if???) Disney decides to reintroduce entertainment.

Streetmosphere Actors in Permanent Danger?

I’m most worried about the Streetmosphere actors. The Green Army Men, the Citizens of Main Street and the Citizens of Hollywood. These actors add SO much to the guest experience. Unfortunately, I can envision Disney just never bringing them back at all. This would be a HUGE loss to all of us.

I really get the feeling that the current management structure of the Parks undervalues the Entertainment element of the Disney Parks experience. But really, it is the talent of the entertainers that elevates the Disney Parks above other theme parks.

The Streetmosphere actors, interacting with guests in character; putting on quick little shows in the street; entertaining guests as they wait in line, or stand in the hot sun? These actors are an INTEGRAL part of the Disney magic.

The wonderful shows that offer guests not just high quality entertainment, but usually magical uplifting messaging as well? Again, part of what makes Disney theme parks stand out.

I understand that with COVID-19 restrictions, the stage shows and Streetmosphere interactions cannot happen right now. But I continue to hope that Disney will work vigorously to return these things to us when things begin to return to normalcy.

On our Disney trips, at the end of every day, we talk about the day and document the highlights. I cannot tell you how many times those highlight moments have been because of a Disney Streetmosphere player or scene.

What Message are Fans Sending Disney?

It is the entertainment that makes Disney tickets worth their price. I sincerely hope that Disney doesn’t get the wrong message from guests continuing to visit the parks right now, even though the offerings are a fraction of what they normally are. Fans are eager to return to Disney, yes. It’s been a really tough year for so many of us, and we are anxious to escape our current reality, and a trip to Disney fulfills that for many.

However, while we may be satisfied with Disney offering “partial” value right now, given the circumstances, I have a hard time believing that even Disney’s most die hard fan base (myself included) will continue to accept high ticket prices for a FRACTION of the experience. If entertainment does not return, I’m concerned that many guests will choose to visit their local Six Flags, rather than invest in a trip to Disney. I can’t believe I’m saying that, but what guests are willing to accept in the short term given this unique situation is unlikely to be acceptable for the long term. I’m really curious as to what you all think. Please let me know in the comments below.

Disney vs. California: Shot Fired?

Last week, we talked about California’s release of their guidelines for large theme parks to reopen in their state. We also discussed that these new guidelines will make it virtually impossible for Disneyland and California Adventure to reopen this year. In fact, it is likely to be next SUMMER before the strict guidelines can be met, and Disneyland and California Adventure could reopen.

We said at the time that we didn’t expect Disney to take this situation quietly, and already the first shot is fired!

Disney has announced that Downtown Disney is expanding in November to include Buena Vista Street. For those of you not aware, Buena Vista Street is INSIDE Disney’s California Adventure theme park.

But…HOW??

Guests that haven’t visited the California theme parks may not understand how this will work. In Florida, Disney has TONS of land, and all the theme parks and Disney Springs are very spread out. In California, the Disneyland/California Adventure/Downtown Disney footprint is MUCH smaller, with everything really close together.

Downtown Disney is basically an area that is on one side of the two theme parks, filled with restaurants and shops, with access to the main pathway that leads to both theme parks. In the middle, there are entrances for each theme park on this path, across from each other, and totally accessible from Downtown Disney. This makes it really easy for guests to pop out of one theme park, have drinks or a meal in Downtown Disney, and then pop back into the OTHER theme park for evening entertainment, for example.

Downtown Disney has been open for a couple of months, enabling guests (primarily local guests) to shop and dine. In Disney’s first effort to combat the stringent guidelines established by the State of California, Disney is opening Buena Vista Street in California Adventure to Downtown Disney, and calling it an “expansion” of Downtown Disney.

All the shops and restaurants on Buena Vista Street will be open for Downtown Disney guests to visit and enjoy. No theme park ticket will be necessary as the theme park itself is not opening, just the shops and restaurants on Buena Vista Street. I think this is a clever way to get some of the theme park back up and running and some of those cast members back to work without actually opening the theme park.

The following shops and restaurants are reopening:

- - - - Elias and Co.
      - Julius Katz & Sons
      - Kingswell Camera Shop
      - Trolley Treats
      - Fiddle, Fifer & Practical Café
      - Carthay Circle Lounge
      - Smoke Jumpers Grill

Disney has not shared whether they are making any modifications to Buena Vista Street to accommodate its addition to Downtown Disney, or how the areas outside of Buena Vista Street inside California Adventure will be inaccessible by guests, but I’m confident they will get it all worked out by November 1.

I can’t wait to see what Disney does next!

Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays

The holiday season returns to EPCOT on November 27 this year with the Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays (Presented by AdventHealth). This holiday “Taste of EPCOT” Festival will run through December 30. This festival will include global, seasonal cuisine at the Holiday Kitchens, located throughout World Showcase. In addition, there will be three Holiday Kitchens located inside the World ShowPlace Events Pavililon. Some of the seasonal selections you will find include slow roasted turkey from the American Holiday Table, pork schnitzel at the Bavaria Holiday Kitchen and Beef Bourguignon from the Yukon Holiday Kitchen.

Holiday Entertainment

During this EPCOT holiday festival, guests will also be treated to holiday character cavalcades traveling through World Showcase. Anna and Elsa are touring in the Frozen Holiday Promenade, while Mickey and friends are traveling in Mickey & Friends Holiday World Tour. Santa Claus will also be making his first appearance in an EPCOT character cavalcade this year—he’ll be taking a horse drawn tour around World Showcase, calling out holiday wishes to everyone.

Holiday Music

The holiday season will not be without musical celebrations. The America Gardens Theatre will feature holiday carols sung by the Voices of Liberty. In Mexico, the Mariachi Cobre will bring to life Las Posadas, a celebration of Mexican holiday customs through music and dance. In Canada, the JAMMitors will perform on the Mill Stage. (I don’t think the JAMMitors are Canadian, but I’m happy they will be so easy to find!)

Holiday Cookie Stroll

The Holiday Cookie Stroll returns to EPCOT again this year, with a complimentary cookie as a reward for completing the stroll. The options to Stroll include cookies from five different locations throughout the park. You can also pickup an adorable cookie jar to collect all your cookies, available at the Holiday Markets all throughout World Showcase, while Supplies last.

Olaf’s Holiday Tradition Expedition

New this year is Olaf’s Holiday Tradition Expedition”. This fun for the whole family adventure is a festive trek around World Showcase. Guests can purchase the expedition map at Mouse Gear, Disney Traders or World Traveler at International Gateway. Once you have the map, you’ll look for hidden Olafs all throughout the World Showcase Pavilions. After you’ve found them all, you’ll receive a “gift worth melting for” (while supplies last).

Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Arts

Sticking with EPCOT news, EPCOT has certainly learned that FESTIVALS are the key to their success. EPCOT is now home to FOUR festivals, and each one’s “Season” is getting longer every year (it appears). In addition, EPCOT seems to have embraced the power (and perhaps profitability) of food and beverage in these festivals, as they all now seem to include the “Taste of” phrase in the festival name. And these Festival names were already fairly long to begin with. But that’s ok, we love them anyway, right?

EPCOT’s first festival after the holidays will be the Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Arts, beginning January 8, 2021. While I’m partial to the International Flower and Garden Festival, many fans claim the Festival of the Arts to be EPCOTS best Festival of the year. This year the Fesitval will run through February 22. We’ll enjoy:

- - - More than 15 Food “studios” serving “culinary art” around World Showcase.
    - A ton of diverse work of Disney and other artists on display in marketplaces all around World Showcase Lagoon.
    - Special Photo locations where guests can “step into the scene”.
    - A paint by number mural for EVERYONE to participate in that serves as a collaborative art project.

I love that with each Festival, the pop up food stands and stores get different names, themed to the event. For the Holiday Festival, the food stations are “Holiday Kitchens” and for the Arts Festival, they are food “Studios”. So fun!

Walt Disney World Entrances Get a Makeover!

We’ve talked before about Disney’s efforts to “spruce” things up around Walt Disney World in time for their big 50^th Anniversary next October. There are lots of construction projects going on, designed to improve the guest experience. Over the spring and summer, Cinderella Castle got a makeover, and the castle is looking really spectacular these days.

This week, Disney World started work on the entrances that greet guests as they arrive on Disney property. These signs are archways that go over the road, and feature Mickey and Minnie Mouse on either side.

For most Disney fans, these signs are the true beginning of vacation. I have countless “through the windshield” or “out the window” pictures of these signs. These signs have started to fade over the last few years and look a little worn and tired.

At last, these wonderful signs are getting a makeover. This refresh shouldn’t take long, and guests visiting for the holiday season should see the Walt Disney World entrance signs in all their new glory. I’m hoping at least one will be finished or nearly so when we visit mid-November. If so, we’ll be sure to get pictures for you guys! To hold us all over until then, here’s a look at the concept art Disney released for the new look.

As someone devoted to Cinderella Castle (some would say unhealthily so…for example, my husband😉) I am disappointed to lose the Castle from the entrance sign. However, I think the new look is really terrific and updated.

Disney Fall 2021 Vacation Packages Available!

We have breaking news this morning. At last, Disney has opened up reservations for next fall. Disney fall 2021 vacation packages are now available.

As you may already be aware, next October will mark the 50th Anniversary of the Walt Disney World Resort. There are many refurbishment projects currently underway, intended to spruce up the parks and resorts for Disney’s big 50th Anniversary. We are all hopeful that by next fall, many of the restrictions imposed by Covid-19 will be lifted, and we’ll all be able to fully enjoy the complete Disney experience.

If you think you might want to visit Disney next fall, I highly encourage you to book sooner rather than later! Disney is going to be applying the full court marketing press, and doing their best to make sure that EVERYONE wants to be at Disney World next fall.

I was at Disney for the 45th Anniversary and it was PACKED! Hotels were at full capacity for most of that fall, and dining reservations were super tough to get. It’s better to lock in your plan early–even if you may need to make changes later.

Waiting in Line at Disney Parks

What to do While Waiting in Line

It is time to accept that if you are visiting Walt Disney World or Disneyland, you are GOING to spend some time waiting in line. What’s more, spending some time in lines is NOT the end of the world. Yes, having a Fast Pass+ reservation and bypassing the line is AWESOME. Riding during an After Hours event or Early Morning Magic and having mostly no lines is really, really fun.

However, the reality is that during your average park day, even if you’ve expertly managed your Fast Pass+ reservations and arrived at the park before it opened, you are going to wait in some lines. During busy times, like Spring Break or Christmas week, you are going to wait in a LOT of lines.

Waiting in line for an attraction you love is not a terrible thing. We’ve all gotten a wee bit spoiled by Fast Pass+, and I’m the first to admit I can be a brat if a ride I want to ride has a line longer than I’m willing to wait in. We have skipped Toy Story Mania on a few trips because of the lines and I LOVE that ride. BUT having the right attitude goes a long way in managing the lines.

If the line is too long, skip it

Be honest with yourself. If the line is longer than you are willing to wait, don’t get in it. If the sign says 90 minutes, trust the sign. Yes, Disney does sometimes exaggerate their wait times a few minutes to help improve guest satisfaction. They DON’T exaggerate them by 45 minutes, though. If you are going to be mad that you waited 90 minutes, don’t get in line. Your resulting mood will make it difficult for you to enjoy the ride and might impact the rest of your family.

It is not going to be the most tragic thing ever if you skip a few attractions because the lines are too long. There are so many great attractions and things to do at Disney, you can’t fit everything in, even if all the lines are short. It’s ok if you decide to skip an attraction here or there.

Snacks

If you’ve got little kids that are going to get hungry while you are waiting in line, don’t get in line unless you have something for them to snack on. Or, take a break before you get in line and grab a snack. If your kids are hungry or thirsty, and you get in a 20 -40 minute line, you’ll end up frustrated. You won’t be happy that your kids are whining or crying, and your fellow line mates may end up annoyed with you and your kids.

Pay attention to the heat

If you are already super hot, and the majority of the line is outside, don’t get in line until you’ve taken a break. Seriously, the Florida heat is no joke. Take a break, sit down and have a cool drink or visit an air conditioned attraction where you can sit for awhile. Cool off and relax a bit for heading into the line.

Play!

Use the line as an opportunity to play with your family. Often you will end up playing with your line-neighbors as well. Heads Up!, the popular phone game is a great choice, as long as you have a back up charger for your phone. One person holds the phone up to their forehead, with the screen facing out. A word pops up on the screen. The rest of you try to give the phone holder clues that will help them guess the word on the screen. There are levels and categories for all ages and interests.

There are other phone games that work well in line-but try to stick with group games that include everyone. Again, you are on vacation to enjoy each other and spend time together. Everyone buried in their own phones is not what you are going for.

Hunting for hidden mickeys can also be a fun way to pass the time. Hidden mickeys are elements in the decor around you that are secretly shaped to resemble Mickey’s head (or sometimes hands). There are THOUSANDS of hidden mickeys located throughout the parks and resorts at Disney.

Enjoy each other!

Line is also a good time to regroup. Ask each other questions. Make everyone stop and think about where they are. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in running from attraction to attraction, we miss how much fun we are having. That sounds silly, but you’d be surprised how often it’s actually true!

What have been the favorite attractions of the day so far? Why? What’s one thing each person wants to do tomorrow? Is there one thing they’ll want to tell their friends about when they get home? What is one thing they’d like to do again later in the day (or week)? Is there a character they’d like to meet?

We sometimes will even play with friends or family back at home. I’ll take a picture of some element in the queue area, and text it to a friend, asking them to guess what attraction I’m on. This is also a good time to post an update to social media. However, as I mentioned above, don’t get drawn into surfing social media. Make your post, and get back to spending time with your family.

Try not to mix short line attractions with long line attractions

This can be tough during busy periods when everything seems like it has long lines. However, when it IS possible, try not to stack attractions with long lines. For example, if you just waited 45 minutes to ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, don’t head to Peter Pan, where you will likely have a line at least that long, if not longer. Check wait times around you and choose something with a short line, like It’s a Small World, or the Carousel.

Also, if you’ve spend a lot of time in line on your feet, try to fit in a show-type attraction where everyone can sit down for a while and give their legs and feet a break. Alternatively, take a sit down snack break and let everyone rest a bit before heading to the next attraction with a line.

Take a break!

If you find yourself feeling frustrated, overheated or aggravated, it’s time for a break. Trust me, you will enjoy the rest of your day a lot more if you take a few minutes or a few hours and take a break.

We often go back to our resort for 3 – 5 hours in the afternoon. We like to give everyone a chance to cool off or to rest. Sometimes we go to the pool, sometimes we nap, sometimes we just rest for a bit. Over the years, I’ve learned that a break like this ultimately adds a lot of enjoyment to the rest of our day.

If you aren’t staying on property, or if your resort is a long distance from the park you are visiting, returning to your resort for a break may not be practical. However, you can still take a break and rest for a bit. If you are at Magic Kingdom, ride the monorail loop for a while. Or take the ferry over to the ticket and transport center and back. The WDW Railroad is closed until 2021, but once it reopens, it is another great way to sit down, enjoy the breeze and relax.

If you’re at Epcot or Hollywood Studios, you can take the Skyliner for a ride. You can visit the boardwalk. Or just find a shady spot, grab a bottle of water or a drink and relax for a while. This works at Animal Kingdom too! Lots of great places to sit and relax.

Parades and Fireworks can be your friends

Personally, I am a fireworks junkie. I love Disney fireworks and they are often the highlight of any day I spend at Disney. However, I recognize that not everyone feels this way.

If fireworks aren’t your thing (or if you’ve seen them once and don’t need to see them again) you can take advantage of shorter lines during fireworks shows. Unless the fireworks happen after the park closes, you will usually find that so many people go to watch the fireworks, the lines for attractions drop dramatically in the hour leading up to and during the fireworks.

Also, a lot of people leave the parks following the following a fireworks show–which can also lead to shorter lines. This doesn’t always work, but can be helpful when it does. For example, the fireworks shows at Epcot and Hollywood Studios usually take place at park close, so the attractions close as the show starts (in most cases). BUT, if you’re visiting a park that stays open AFTER the fireworks, you should enjoy shorter lines.

Similarly, lines are usually a little shorter leading up to and during parades. Guests claim viewing spots up to one hour before the parade, and take about 15 minutes to disperse after the parade. The difference isn’t as dramatic as during fireworks shows, but it can be a good window to try and ride a popular attraction with a shorter line.

We tend to skip the afternoon parades in favor of returning to our resort for a break, but I’m a sucker for both the Halloween parade and the Christmas parade. If you’re attending a party, and the parade is running twice? Skip the first parade in favor of riding attractions! The second parade will be less congested, and you’ll benefit from slightly shorter lines during the first parade!

VIP Tours

If you are visiting during a very busy time or truly have no patience with lines, you may want to consider a VIP Tour. VIP Tours are pricey, but they offer a luxury experience for the guests and completely or mostly eliminate lines. You won’t ride every attraction, but VIP Tour guides will make sure you ride the attractions that are most important to you and your family. Attitude = Happy Vacation

Honestly, the healthier your attitude is about waiting in line, the happier your vacation at Disney will be. It is unavoidable. You will have to wait in some lines, and you will often be surrounded by lots of people.

The choice is yours. You can choose to let the lines make you cranky, or you can appreciate the quality time you are spending with your family. Choose to appreciate that you are seeing families from all over the world, enjoying the same activities that you are and your family are enjoying. You can notice the details in the queues, and enjoy those queues that feature interesting scenes, cooler climates or interactive games.

Some of the memories that stick with me the most are silly moments in line. Playing with the kids, getting the giggles, meeting people from all over the world, people watching-these moments are the real magic! In fact, the moment I realized I was in love with my (then future) husband happened in line for It’s a Small World during our first trip together. Who knows? Maybe if there hadn’t been a line that day, we wouldn’t have ended up here!

Waiting in line isn’t a terrible thing. Yes, I spend a lot of time on this blog and with my clients planning to avoid lines as much as possible. But it’s important to realize that some lines are going to be part of your trip. It’s up to you how you’ll respond to them. Choosing to make the lines you end up in a magical moment of your trip? That is the secret to a truly memorable vacation!

It is fairly unusual for Disney to release this many free dining promotions in one calendar year. I suspect Disney is not seeing the reservations for Fall and Winter this year they’d expected.

Skyliner Gondolas Open September 29!

Great news! Disney has announced that the new Skyliner Transportation system will officially open for Disney World guests on September 29! Testing has been going on for several months now, and I don’t know about you, but I have been DYING for the official announcement of WHEN the Skyliner gondolas would be ready for passengers. And finally, we have our answer! The Skyliner gondolas will be ready for YOU to ride on September 29, 2019. Whooooooo Hoooooo!

I’m a teensy surprised that the Gondolas won’t be “LIVE” before Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at Hollywood Studios on August 29. I had thought Disney would try and open the Skyliner Transporation System before that deadline to provide additional transportation options for guests, PLUS provide another “attraction” to absorb guests. My thought was Skyliner Gondolas could help with crowd management. However, it makes sense that it opens a month later. I suspect Disney has their hands full already with making sure they are ready for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when it opens.

How gorgeous does that look? I mean, seriously! I am SUPER excited to ride one of these Gondolas through the whole route. Remember: The Skyliner Transportation System will visit four resorts, plus Epcot and Hollywood Studios. Here are the four resorts:

  - Disney’s NEW Riviera Resort (opens in December)

Just the Facts, Ma’m.

TECHNICALLY, Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort are sharing one Skyliner Station. The Station is located on the lake between the two resorts and is a short walk from either resort. So, one stop on the Skyliner Transportation System, but TWO resorts served. More bang for the buck, I guess. But it sounds like the line goes further than it does when I say it goes to four resorts and two theme parks, so I wanted to clarify.

There are more than 300 gondolas on the Skyliner Transportation line. Each gondola (also being called “cabins”) can seat up to ten guests. All gondolas are wheelchair accessible, according to Disney.

Epcot International Food & Wine Festival 2019 is the LONGEST EVER

This year marks the 24th year the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival dominates the fall season at Walt Disney World. The 2019 Epcot Food & Wine Festival will be the longest festival ever, at 87 days!

Long celebrated as a great way to try lots of different international cuisine, wines and beers, the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival invites guests to explore the “international” aspect of World Showcase at Epcot.

This year’s Festival begins August 29, 2019, and will run through November 23, 2019. The Festival is anchored by 30 Global Marketplaces throughout World Showcase. There are world flavors for everyone of all ages to discover. There are Global Marketplaces featuring food and beverages from all over the world. The choices are not limited to the nine countries already featured in World Showcase. Every year, there are returning favorites and new adventurous flavors to try.

Eat to the Beat Concert Series

Another highlight from the annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is the Eat to the Beat Concert Series. Every night, from August 29 – November 19, a band will play at the America Gardens Theatre. Sundays – Thursdays, the shows are at 5:30 pm, 6:45 pm and 8:00 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, showtimes are 6:30 pm, 7:45 pm and 9:00 pm. Epcot admission is required to attend any of the shows; however, the Eat to the Beat Concert Series itself is included with your park admission.

As you might imagine, seating is limited, and guests often line up early to try and get seats. However, the music carries to the area immediately around the America Gardens Theatre, and it’s not unusual to see people standing around the area, enjoying the music. Sometimes, you’ll even see people dancing!

Not all the acts for this year’s Festival and been released yet, but a lot of them have. There are some new acts this year, along with a lot of returning favorites.

Eat to the Beat Dining Package

If there is a particular band you love, and you REALLY want to make sure you get guaranteed seats for one of their shows, there are Eat to the Beat Dining Packages available. You can reserve Eat to the Beat Dining Packages for breakfast, lunch, or dinner at a variety of Epcot restaurants. For a small premium, your meal will include guaranteed seating for a particular show on the day of meal. Eat to the Beat Dining Packages are available to book now!

Note: If you choose NOT to book an Eat to the Beat Dining Package, it does NOT mean you won’t get a seat. You just won’t have a guaranteed seat. You’ll have to wait in line with all the other non-dining package guests, and hope that you get to the front of the line before all the seats are full. This is a lot easier for some acts than others. If one show is super crowded, try the next show. It may be less crowded. Generally, the later shows are more popular than the early show.

Future World Gets in on the Action

Not to be left out of the global extravaganza that is the 2019 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, Future World participates with a “Disney du Jour Dance Party”. This weekend Dance Party has been so popular in years past, Disney has expanded it to seven days a week for this year’s Festival. Sundays through Thursdays, a Disney DJ will manage the Dance Party, and on the weekends, stars from Radio Disney with add a little extra excitement with live performances. So far, only the opening weekend guest has been announced; Meg Donnelly from the Disney Channel original movie Zombies.

Food & Wine Festival Special Events

Throughout the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, there are a variety of culinary demonstrations and educational seminars. Celebrity chefs and well known personalities from the world of international cuisine will host culinary demonstrations throughout the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Many of these demonstrations and talks will be included with your park admission. In addition, there are a variety of extra special events that are offered; however these extra special events require reservations and cost extra.

Beverage Seminars

Reservations are required for this 45 minute seminar. It’s held at the World ShowPlace Events Pavilion, located between United Kingdom and Canada. Epcot admission is required, and the additional cost per person for this event is $19 per person, plus tax.

The Beverage Seminars are held some Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during the Festival at 4:30 pm. These Seminars are hosted by sommeliers, cicerones and other beverage experts. They will share their knowledge and offer samples for you to taste. Depending on the seminary, you might learn about state-of-the-art winemaking, brewing or distilling techniques.

Note: Alcohol will be served to guests 21 and older. All events are subject to change or cancellation without notice.

Cheese Seminars

Reservations are required for these 90 minute seminars, held on select Saturdays throughout the Festival. Seminars are held at the World ShowPlace Events Pavilion from 9:45 am – 11:15 am. Epcot admission is required; the additional cost per person for each of these events is $95, plus tax (gratuity included).

These seminars are hosted by distinguished cheese experts. The seminars are designed to educate guests about the different textures, aromas, and flavors of popular cheeses from all over the world. Guests will have the opportunity to sample artisanal cheese selections paired with complementary wines or craft beers.

- New World Cheeses and Old World Wines (September 14, 2019)
- Mediterranean Cheeses and Wines (September 28, 2019)
- Great British Cheeses and Ales (October 5, 2019)
- Italian Cheeses and Wines (October 12, 2019)

Party for the Senses

For many food and wine connoisseurs, one of the highlights of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is the Party for the Senses. The Party for the Senses is a special ticketed evening event featuring tasting stations, live entertainment, elegant decor and acclaimed chefs and personalities. More than 20 renown chefs are featured. International musical artists Femmes of Rock are returning this year, following their popular debut at this event in 2018. Reservations are required for this special evening event, held on select Saturday nights during the Festival. Book your reservations now.

Epcot admission is required, in addition to the event ticket.

The event is held on select Saturdays at the World ShowPlace Events Pavilion. The World ShowPlace Events Pavilion is located between the United Kingdom and Canada in World Showcase.

There are two seating options, with pricing between $229 and $359 per guest plus tax, gratuity included, based on which seating option you choose.

Category #1: Wine View Lounge

Category #1 is the VIP option, and priced at $359 per guest plus tax, gratuity included. Your Wine View Lounge admission provides early access to the event at 6:30 pm.

Your VIP event ticket includes a private, premium reserved table. When you arrive at your table, you will find an amuse-bouche and a welcome beverage. Your early entrance offers a special briefing from the chefs and a special phot opportunity. The Wine View Lounge has exclusive premium bar service and artisanal cheeses available only for the VIP guests with Category #1 event tickets. Your ticket will also include a special premium wine glass and an additional gift as your souvenirs of the elegant evening.

Also included in this VIP option is complimentary Minnie Van service to transport ticketed guests from their resort hotel to the event and return service at the end of the event. Alternatively, if you are already in Epcot on the day of your event, complimentary transportation will be provided from the Main Entrance to the event.

Category #2: Reserved Seating

Category #2 includes reserved seating on the main floor of the event. These tickets are priced at $229 per person, plus tax, gratuity included. Your ticket will include a specialty welcome beverage as well as an event exclusive wine glass. Your ticket will allow you access to the event from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm.

Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend

For runDisney fans, an annual highlight of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend. This year’s Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend is October 31 through November 3, 2019.

The Half Marathon and 10K races both go through the Walt Disney World Resort, and feature Disney characters and Disney style entertainment throughout each race. A very popular post-race party at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival concludes the race weekend.

The runDisney race fun begins with the Disney Fall Feast 5K on November 1, 2019. The Disney Wine & Dine 10K is on November 2, 2019, followed by the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon on November 3, 2019. Not to be outdone by other runDisney race weekends, the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend includes a special Wine & Dine Two Course Challenge. The Two Course Challenge combines the 10K on Saturday with the Half Marathon on Sunday. Successful Two Course Challenge finishers earn a special Disney Two Course Challenge medal, plus both Half Marathon and 10K medals. Registration is required for the Disney Two Course Challenge to be eligible for this special medal.

Epcot’s Most Popular Event

Epcot is wonderful to visit at any time of year, but it has become especially well known for its Festivals. The Epcot International Festival of the Arts dominates the beginning of each year at Epcot, running mid-January through late February.

My personal favorite, the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, premiers each year in early March and runs through the first few days of June.

Then comes the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, the topic of this article, followed by the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays. I promise to do an article about the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays soon.

It is the fall Epcot International Food & Wine Festival that is the most popular Epcot festival, however. The ever popular “drink around the world” informal drinking challenge that many adult guests love to complete takes on a whole other level when attempted during the Food & Wine Festival.

Hollywood Studios During the Holidays!

Happy Holidays Everyone!

I’m so sorry I haven’t been able to update since our trip. I can’t believe how busy it has been since we got back! Between being sick and working LOTS of extra hours trying to earn a little Christmas money, it’s been NUTS!

Getting back on track though. With that said, here’s the first of several posts about our trip.

I have to tell you, I really feel like Disney has upped their game in the Holiday celebration arena in recent years. They’ve always done a good job decorating each resort and they always decorated Main Street at the Magic Kingdom. And they had the Osborne Spectacle of Lights at Hollywood Studios, but unfortunately that closed a couple of years ago. With that gone, other than Christmas Trees at Hollywood Studios, Epcot and Animal Kingdom, they didn’t do a LOT of decorating in the past at the parks.

I feel like that has changed. During our trip, I felt like the holiday spirit was EVERYWHERE. The Holidays were much more in evidence everywhere we went. If you needed help getting in the Holiday Spirit, Disney is definitely the RIGHT place to be, that is for sure! Going relatively early in the season gave us a nice kickoff to our 2017 holiday season.

Hollywood Studios was where I noticed the biggest change: It looks like Hollywood Studios is really trying to attract crowds this year with their Holiday decor and activities, perhaps partially to make up for all the attractions that have closed to make way for the upcoming Star Wars land and the expansion of Pixar Place? Whatever the motivation, it really scored with us!

I have to add that we LOVED the Osborne Spectacle of Lights that used to be on the Streets of America at Hollywood Studios, and were heartbroken when it closed due to all the refurbishments. We were lucky enough to visit it one last time on the last night of our wedding trip, and I’m so glad that we did! The display was festive and magical and very fun…and we DEFINITELY missed it this year!

The Studios is really trying to still be a destination for visitors wanting Holiday Magic, though…They have added a lot of Holiday decor throughout the park, and they’ve added a new Jingle Jam Jingle BAM show in the evenings that is outstanding. While we still missed the Osborne Spectacle of Lights, we really felt that Hollywood Studios held its own as a Holiday destination with the new additions.

Check out the recently refurbished Echo Lake area at Hollywood Studios! Even Gertie the Dinosaur got decked out for the holidays with the addition of some snow and a giant Santa Hat. There are floating Christmas ornaments all over the lake and a gorgeous holiday tree at one end. It was fun and festive and looked really great at night, too.

One of our favorite activities at Hollywood Studios is to watch the Streetmosphere Character Actors. They come out several times a day, mostly on Sunset Boulevard, in various groupings and do crowd-interactive, at least partially improvisational, performances. And they are TERRIFIC. If you don’t take time to check them out when you visit, you are really missing out!

The Streetmosphere players really embraced the Holiday spirit as well. In one scene we watched, they were a group of singers, trying to get on the Bing Crosby Holiday Radio Show. They did a hilarious version of the 12 days of Christmas, with a few members of the audience participating.

Another really funny one we watched was a riff on the Holiday Parade Celebrity Hosting idea. They basically pretended everyone walking by was part of the parade and they threw out jokes and interacted with various “participants” as they went by. Some people really played with them too, it was really funny. It happened to be Dapper Day, so they had a fashion parade at one point, really letting those folks shine!

The Hollywood Studios Streetmosphere players are so talented, and they think so fast on their feet! They really added to our enjoyment of the day, that’s for sure!

Sunset Boulevard has gotten a festive update, and at night…wow. Disney has really embraced their projection technology all over the World and boy is it everywhere at night at Hollywood Studios during the Holidays! The Tower of Terror is the canvas for several themed festive vignettes, set to themed music and coordinated with projections on nearby billboards as well. It’s overwhelming and a little disconcerting to be honest…you see all this festive happy Holiday magic on the Tower…and then people are screaming up at the top of the Tower. You don’t see them, but you hear them, at least a little bit. It was a little odd..but still really really cool. Disney even used the old snow machines that used to over at the Osborne Lights display to make it snow on Sunset Boulevard (I’m assuming they are the same ones…maybe they’re new 😊!). Unfortunately, none of my pictures turned out — the low lighting on the street combined with the quickly moving images on the Tower turned out a big blurry mess on my camera.

Like I said, it was pretty astonishing. What really blew our minds, though, was the Jingle Jam Jingle BAM show at the parks original landmark, the replica of Mann’s Chinese Theatre.

Much like the shows over at the Magic Kingdom that use the Castle as a giant projection screen, Hollywood Studios uses the Chinese Theatre and surrounding buildings as giant screens for all kinds of holiday magic. Coordinated with music, lights and fireworks, the show is festive and fun.

The crowd around us really seemed to enjoy it, too. Lots of oooo’s and ahhh’s. It was super bright, colorful and to be honest…kinda dazzling!

We really enjoyed seeing Hollywood Studios decked out in her Holiday glory. This park is fairly limited at the moment, as so many areas and attractions have been closed to make way for upcoming attractions…I wasn’t sure we’d be able to make a full day of it. But we had a great day, and it was pretty action packed, too. I’ll give you a full day recap in my upcoming trip report, but I’m happy to say Hollywood Studios during the holidays is a definite MUST-DO if you’re at Disney. There’s still quite a few attractions and activities and the Holiday decor and nighttime entertainment is well worth a visit during your next holiday trip!

SOLD OUT: November 9 2017 Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party!

Wanted to jump on with a quick update: Usually, the early-in-the-season Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party are a pretty safe bet for lighter crowds and shorter lines. However, the first Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party of the season has ALREADY sold out. This year, the first party is Thursday, November 9, 2017. That party has already completely sold out!!

A couple things that COULD be contributing to this: Perhaps, Disney is releasing few tickets for the very first party of the season, giving them a chance to work out any kinks in this year’s party events, shows and parades. Or, they might limit the tickets for the first party to generate news and stories like this one: this could build excitement and drive people that have been thinking about attending the parties this year rush to commit and buy their tickets before they’re all gone!! Or, quite simply: There may just be a LOT of people planning to attend that very first party. Usually, that week in November is reasonably light traffic–maybe this year is different? Maybe more people are traveling to Disney this November? I don’t work for Disney, so I honestly don’t know. I’ll keep researching and see if I can learn anything more about this year’s crowds.

I will be sure to report back after the party to let you all know how crowded it is (or isn’t!) and whether it’s sold out by party night.
