We’ve all been waiting for this announcement. Well, maybe not ALL of us. But many Walt Disney World fans HAVE been waiting and wondering and asking, “When will Splash Mountain Close?” Ever since the announcement in 2020 that Splash Mountain would close and be replaced by a Princess and the Frog themed Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, many fans have wondered WHEN? Today, we have our answer. Splash Mountain will close on January 23, 2023.
If you want to make sure you ride Splash Mountain one more time before it closes, make your reservations NOW. The last day you will be able to ride is January 22, 2023. Then Splash Mountain will close forever. When the attraction at this location opens in late 2024, it will be as a new attraction, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
What do we know about the new attraction?
We don’t know a whole lot yet about the new attraction. Here’s what we DO know. It will still be a water ride. It will still (most likely) be the same basic attraction that Splash Mountain was. It will be completely rethemed. The queue will likely get some new theming elements, but will likely remain materially the same. This refurbishment/retheming project will take 18-24 months to complete. Currently, all the promotional materials indicate the new attraction will open in 2024. I suspect it will open sometime in the fourth quarter of 2024, assuming everything goes as expected during the refurbishment/retheming. Any serious setbacks and this attraction opening will likely move to 2025.
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
The new version of this water ride is going to be themed to feature the Princess and the Frog. I’m very excited about this. I loved this movie, I thought it was very fun. Tiana is a beautiful princess with a lot of spunk, and I loved many of the other characters in the movie. I love that Disney is bringing more diversity into the parks and trying to include more diversity in the attractions as well. There is still a long way to go, but I’m happy to see Disney investing some time and money in an attraction themed to this movie.
Disney has not yet released much concept art for this attraction. I think we will see more concept art after Splash Mountain closes. Once he actual project to refurbish and retheme the attraction has begun, Disney will want us to start getting excited about the new attraction.
One piece of concept art I’ve seen so far, above, shows Tiana in hiking clothes, across the water from her jazz loving alligator friend, Louis. From what I’m hearing this attraction will be filled jazz music and the fun of New Orleans and Mardi Gras!
It sounds like Disney wants to make Tiana’s Bayou Adventure an immersive experience for guest and a tribute to the warmth, the music and the people of Louisiana. I’m really looking forward to seeing what they’re going to do with this attraction.
What about Splash Mountain at Disneyland?
Disney has not yet announced when Splash Mountain at Disneyland will close, but I don’t think it will be far behind its Florida brother. Again, if you want to make sure to get “one last ride” in on Splash Mountain before it is gone for good, make a plan to do that VERY soon.
Are you ready for Splash Mountain to Close?
You’ve had almost three years to prepare yourself. Are you ready for Splash Mountain to close forever? Remember, we’re not losing a great water ride–we will still have that. In fact, the new version MIGHT even be better. It’s always a possibility.
How do you feel? Are you excited about Tiana’s Bayou Adventure? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
And if you want to plan that last minute trip for January to go ride Splash Mountain one more time? Remember, I’m here for you. Email brooke@disneycastledreaming.com for a no obligation quote.
In this week’s Disney Parks News, we have big changes coming for the virtual queue at Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. We also have Disneyland Paris closure news, and Disney’s official statement on the entertainment layoffs we saw last week. For these stories and more, please check out our YouTube video below.

Disney Parks News
The Holidays have Arrived at Disney World!
Halloween is over and the Holidays have arrived at Walt Disney World! It’s amazing how quickly Disney makes the transition from Fall and Halloween décor to winter holiday décor.
Here is the full statement from Disney:
“Walt Disney World Resort offers a treasure trove of experiences for guests of all ages. We recognize that part of the magic of visiting any Disney park is seeing favorite Disney friends and discovering one-of-a-kind shows and performances. Since reopening, we’ve continued to offer modified character experiences and entertainment throughout our resort, while also taking the appropriate steps for the health and safety of our guests and cast members.
Recently, we’ve had to make some difficult decisions to reduce our workforce as the business impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic have become more long-lasting than anyone could have predicted. As a result, we’ve had to pause many live shows and entertainment experiences at our resort for longer than originally anticipated.
While it’s impossible at this time to fully replace the incredible entertainment that existed throughout our parks before the pandemic, we are offering live entertainment in new ways wherever possible, including character cavalcades in all four parks and pop-up appearances, like discovering Joy from “Inside Out” frolicking on the lawn near the Imagination! pavilion in EPCOT.
Additionally, we’re featuring modified shows such as the popular “For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and live musical performances like the Main Street Philharmonic in Magic Kingdom or the Discovery Island Drummers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This extends to our seasonal offerings, with Halloween underway and the holidays right around the corner. In fact, the fan-favorite Voices of Liberty are set to make their return and join the JAMMitors and Mariachi Cobre at the American Gardens Theatre during the upcoming Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays, beginning on Nov. 27.
Determining which shows can return and when is a complex process. As with the rest of our phased reopening, we will also consider the guidance of health officials and government agencies in determining when the time will be right to adjust capacity, and as soon as it is appropriate, we will start to bring additional entertainment back.
Like most of our fans, we know that our beloved entertainment cast are an incredibly special and essential part of the Disney experience. We look forward to the day when we can welcome back more live entertainment to our parks, and we will share more news about these announcements as we’re able to do so.”
Reactions
I find this statement both disappointing and frustrating. Do I understand that Disney feels they cannot allow most shows to resume due to social distancing requirements? Honestly? Yes and no. They have been able to re-introduce the Frozen Sing Along Celebration successfully, and that’s a show. And many of the theatres in the parks are outdoor venues. It seems that some shows could return, with seating clearly marked and restricted to provide proper social distancing.
To me, it seems almost convenient to blame the ongoing (and perhaps escalating) Covid-19 crisis as the reason there is almost no entertainment, rather than the more probably budget cuts. Why are the JAMMitors ok to perform in EPCOT on the Mill Stage in Canada, but not the amazing Taiko Matsuriza drummers in Japan?
Disney has also made a very important, very helpful change to the virtual queue situation. Now, guests who hope to ride Rise of the Resistance can request to enter the virtual queue at 7 am from their hotel room (or breakfast or wherever). The only thing that is required is a park reservation for Hollywood Studios that day (which of course requires a ticket).
Why does this change to the required location to join the virtual queue matter? Here’s why: OPTIONS. For example, let’s say you really want to ride Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. You have a park reservation for today, and you are planning to visit Hollywood Studios. Let’s say you try, but are unable to join the virtual queue and get a boarding group at 7am. Now, you have some OPTIONS.
You can go back to bed. You don’t need to make sure you are in Hollywood Studios by 10am.
Based on reservation availability, you could decide to save Hollywood Studios for a different day. In that scenario, you would cancel your Hollywood Studios park reservation. Then, you could book a new park reservation at a different park. (Note: I highly recommend you check park reservation availability before you pull this trigger.)
You might decide NOT to visit Hollywood Studios until the afternoon.
Spend the morning playing at the pool
Enjoy a round of golf
Ride the Skyliner for a while
Relax at your resort
Visit Disney Springs
The 2 pm virtual queue does still exist. That virtual queue DOES require guests to be physically inside the park to join the queue.
It is my hope that these changes will loosen up the stranglehold that Rise of the Resistance has been having on visitors for months. With these changes, perhaps more guests will be able to ride. If that happens, theoretically fewer guests will crowd into Hollywood Studios in the hopes of riding that one attraction.
Our Upcoming Disney Vacation
Next week, we will be at Walt Disney World ourselves, and will be able to test out the new system. I will update you on our success (or lack thereof) with Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
Next week’s Disney Parks News Update will be filmed while we are on site at Walt Disney World. As a result, the video may end up a little on the rough side. However, we will do our best to still get the video posted on Wednesday. Thank you in advance for your patience. We are really looking forward to updating you with our in person, on the ground experiences in the parks.
In this week’s Disney Parks News Update, we have GUNS confiscated on Disney property, refurbishment updates, LOTS of food news, scary clowns and more! Please watch this week’s Disney Parks News Update video below.
For those of you that prefer reading your Disney Parks news Update to watching the video, please read on!
Disney Parks News Update
Refurbishments
We are starting this week’s news update with refurbishments.
EPCOT
EPCOT currently looks a little bit like a construction zone, as EPCOT Future World is in the midst of a major overhaul. There are a number of projects in progress around EPCOT’s Entrance and throughout Future World. Among these projects is the Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster, scheduled to open sometime next year. We are happy to report that construction appears to be moving ahead on all these projects. We don’t have completion dates or opening dates for any of the work going on, but we are hopeful that Disney is on track with their plans to have this work complete in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary next October.
Frozen Ever After
A VERY popular attraction, Frozen Ever After, is closing for refurbishment in a couple of weeks. Don’t worry—it’s only for a few days. The attraction will be closed from November 2 – 6, 2020. This is likely just for cleaning and general maintenance; this is not enough time for Disney to do any major overhauls. Not to mention, this is still a fairly new attraction. It really shouldn’t need any major refurbishment yet.
We’ll be in the park the following week, and will let you know how the attraction looks when it reopens!
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort is reopening at long last on November 1, 2020. If you aren’t familiar with the Art of Animation resort, it is a very popular Value Resort, and one of our favorites. Check out our blog post about this resort here.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
During the shutdown, Art of Animation got some minor refurbishments, including new flooring and updates in the lobby area. The rooms themselves got minor updates to furnishings and room details.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out Art of Animation, it is located on the Skyliner line, and it’s a worthwhile stop to check it out. All the themed icons from Cars, The Lion King, Finding Nemo and the Little Mermaid make terrific backdrops and props for unique family pictures.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The Big Blue Pool, Art of Animation’s largest pool, did not get it’s refurbishment done during the closure, however. As a result, the Big Blue Pool will be closed for refurbishment from January 1, 2021 through early April 2021.
Guests are encouraged to use the Flippin’ Fins Pool (Little mermaid area) or the Cozy cone Pool (in the Cars area) during the closure. The Schoolyard Sprayground play area is NOT being affected by the closure.
Guests staying at Art of Animation during this time should expect to see or hear construction during their stay; however, construction does not occur between dusk and 9 am, so your rest time should not be impacted.
If you have a reservation during this time and are concerned about this refurbishment, please reach out to your travel agent (or me!).
Boardwalk Inn: Luna Pool
A highlight for me personally in this week’s Disney Parks News Update is about the CLOWN over at the Luna Pool at the Boardwalk Inn.
The pool at the Boardwalk Inn, the Luna Pool is currently being refurbished while the Boardwalk Inn is closed. The pool area at the Boardwalk Inn is themed to the turn of the 20th century Coney island. The area has a sort of “Circus-y/Old timey amusement park” vibe.
The centerpiece of the pool area has always been a giant clown face. The mouth of the clown is a waterslide. I’m not a giant fan of clowns to begin with but this clown? Totally creeps me out. In fact, I’ve avoided booking there for my family because of the creepy clown.
I mean, look at that thing. Don’t you think it’s a little creepy? (OR A LOT CREEPY???!!!)
Here’s the big news: locals have reported that the giant clown head has been REMOVED as part of the Luna Pool refurbishment!!! It has been seen being taken away from the pool area (although no one actually saw it dismantled, thrown in the trash or burned in a ceremonial cleansing so we do not know for sure it is not coming back). The area where the clowns head WAS is still covered with tarps, but work is continuing.
Dare we hope that the clown is gone for good? Could the Imagineers have something new and creative for that area that doesn’t terrorize small children (or ME)??? I do not know, unfortunately. We will definitely scope out the pool area when we visit next month; hopefully we will be able to give you a more definitive update then. But for now? I’m happily booking a reservation for my mom and I at Boardwalk for May, assuming the clown will be GONE.
Food News
We have lots of FOOD NEWS in this week’s Disney Parks News Update!
ABC Commissary
Over at Hollywood Studios, the ABC Commissary has reopened with a brand new menu. Some old favorites are still there, but the menu has had a major overhaul. Tacos and curry rice bowls have taken center stage. New items include Pork carnitas tacos, Shrimp tacos, curry rice bowl with shrimp and a plant based curry rice bowl with tofu. Two new chicken sandwiches also join the lineup. Kids can choose from a Pork taco, grilled cheese sandwich, a turkey sandwich or their old favorite, uncrustables.
Minnie’s Halloween Dine
Also at Hollywood Studios, we have a new menu for Minnie’s Halloween Dine over at Hollywood and Vine.
This meal does feature character appearances. The characters will parade through the dining area and wave and let you take pictures. However, they won’t be stopping at your table for individual pictures as you are probably used to from character meals pre Covid.
This is a fixed price, three course meal, featuring a salad, entrée and dessert.
Entrée choices include prime rib, roasted turkey breast, macaroni and cheese with shrimp, Salmon, Pork osso bucco and plant based pan seared king trumpet mushrooms.
Desserts include your choice of apple blueberry pie, banana crème pie, chocolate smores pie, vanilla crème brulee and a plant based cherry lemon pie.
Cocktails, wine and beer are available for an additional price. Beer starts at $7.50, Wine by the glass starts at $10, and cocktails start at $13.
In the past I have NOT enjoyed Hollywood & Vine, however, I have to admit this sounds pretty good. We may have to check this out for ourselves!
Chef Mickey’s
Next up in Food news: Chef Mickey’s Character Dining is coming back! One of the most popular character meals on property, Chef Mickey’s will soon be visited by Chef Mickey himself (and a few of his friends!).
Starting on December 16, 2020, Mickey and Minnie and their friends will be back at Chef Mickey’s at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. It’s not quite the same—this is NOT a buffet at the moment, and the characters will not be coming to your table. However, the characters will “pop up” at surprise intervals and parade through the dining rooms, waving at guests for pictures. Reservations for Chef mickey’s character dining open up October 17.
Its important to note that Chef Mickey’s IS currently open. Right now, it’s an all you care to eat family feast WITHOUT characters. Pricing for adults is $25 and kids are $14 (plus tax). However, once the characters return, pricing will jump to $42 for adults and $27 for kids (plus tax).
In addition to the characters joining diners, there are three new entrees being added to the menu. Mickey’s celebration pancakes, a loaded potato cheese casserole with smoked bacon crumbles and chives and finally, Goofy’s Banana Bread French Toast—which looks and sounds like a heart attack on a plate.
It will probably taste AMAZING though. If you plan to check out this very popular character dining experience, reservations are HIGHLY recommended (really, required).
Updated Mask Warnings
New mask warning signs appeared throughout the Walt Disney World theme parks last week. These signs more specifically state that guests must wear their masks properly, at all times, and further state that guests who do not wear their masks will be asked to leave the parks.
In addition to the new signs located throughout the parks, Disney has added an audio announcement about the mask policy that plays in the parks several times each day. Finally, they’ve added the message to the My Disney Experience phone app. Disney is very serious that guests understand this policy.
I know there has been some confusion on this: Florida was recently moved to Phase 3, which means the Florida state government is no longer requiring masks in all public places, and the state has rescinded the fines for not wearing a mask. HOWEVER, it is important to recognize that each business has the right to establish and follow their own protocols, based on what they believe is safest for their guests or customers.
Disney is SERIOUS about their Mask Policy
Completely separate from what the state dictates, Disney has their OWN policies. Disney has determined, based on their research and advice from scientific advisors and guidelines from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) that masks help prevent the spread of Covid-19 (and other airborne spread diseases). Disney is requiring all guests over the age of 2 to wear masks at all times while in the theme parks, and while in public areas of Disney resorts.
I understand this is a hot button topic for some people. Bottom line: If you aren’t willing to wear a mask during your Disney visit, do not visit Disney.
If you don’t wear a mask, you will not be permitted entry to the theme parks. If you remove your mask (other than while dining), you will be asked to leave the theme park. It’s very simple. If your aren’t comfortable wearing a mask during your Disney theme park visit, do not visit Disney until masks are no longer required. Hopefully, sometime next year. Disney has a very good refund policy right now, due to the challenges raised by Covid-19, and I am confident they will work with you to cancel or reschedule your trip.
Walt Disney World Theme Parks Capacity
In last week’s Disney Parks News Update, we talked about capacity at the theme parks. We expressed our belief that Disney has been quietly increasing capacity at the theme parks. This belief is based on anecdotal and observational evidence. The theme parks are feeling more crowded. We are seeing much longer lines for attractions. It’s getting more difficult to social distance in main traffic areas throughout the parks. Park reservations are fully booked up, and then Disney releases more availability for certain days, especially weekends. In general, it just “feels” like the parks are getting more crowded every week.
Bob Chapek, Disney CEO
However, Bob Chapek, Disney’s CEO told CNBC this week that Walt Disney World theme parks are still capped at 25% capacity. He also stated that the parks will remain capped at 25% capacity until the CDC guidelines change.
We have to assume that Bob Chapek knows what he’s talking about. He’s the boss of all the bosses, and while he’s not in the trenches admitting guests into the park, we figure he’s heavily involved with the decisions related to capacity. Especially as those decisions will affect the overall profitability of the theme parks dramatically, right?
We’re NOT at 25% Capacity?
So what could explain the discrepancy between what we (and many others who have visited over the last few weeks) are feeling and what Bob Chapek tells us must be true?
1) It’s likely that when the parks first opened, they were not any where near 25% capacity. Perhaps they opened at 5 or 10% and hovered there for a while. We saw lots of pictures and comments that the parks were like ghost towns, and all the attractions were walk-ons during the first couple of months. That has certainly changed. So perhaps what we are seeing now is truly 25% capacity?
2) Another factor in longer lines could be staffing related. If Disney is staffing fewer cast members on attractions, perhaps some “lanes” are closed in attractions? This could slow down the movement of guests through those rides, resulting in longer lines and more congestion?
I’m not sure. It sure seems like the crowds we are seeing, especially in Hollywood Studios and the Magic Kingdom, are higher than 25% capacity. But we don’t work at the parks, and Disney is fairly tightlipped about what they consider FULL capacity to be. So the short answer right now? We don’t know. We will update you next month with our perspective when we are actually there ourselves.
Assault Weapons at Disney World?
Our final story this week is a troubling one. We have learned, courtesy of the Orlando Sentinel as well as several other news outlets, that a Disney guest brought an AR-15 rifle and 9 mm handgun with him on his Disney vacation!
The guest, a 43 year old man from Palm Beach Gardens, checked into the Polynesian Villages Resort over Labor Day Weekend. When the guns were discovered in his luggage, Disney contacted the local sheriff. The man had a concealed weapons permit, and therefore was not arrested.
However, Disney does not allow weapons of any kind on property, so Disney confiscated and held the man’s arsenal for him until the end of his vacation. He stated he brought the weapons because he was worried about his family’s safety during the social justice protests in the Orlando area last month.
Personally, I think if you are worried enough about the safety of your family that you need to bring an assault rifle, a hand gun and more than 100 rounds of ammunition with you to DISNEY WORLD where there are THOUSANDS of unarmed adults and children, perhaps you should postpone your vacation until a time when it feels safer for you to visit.
Again, Disney is being extremely flexible with cancellations, refunds and rescheduling. I would never want anyone to feel unsafe, but we can’t have assault rifles and other deadly weapons making their way onto Disney property.
To be clear: Disney does not allow guests to bring weapons of any kind onto its property. If you have issues with this policy, please contact Disney directly.
Disney Parks News Update: Final Thoughts
That’s it for this week’s Disney Parks News Update. It’s good to see that in some ways, things at the parks are starting to look a little more normal. However, it is a sign of the times that we are seeing stronger mask warnings from Disney, and that we had a story this week that included the word “assault rifle”. I’m hopeful that we will have more stories about things getting back to normal as time goes on.
This week’s Disney Parks News Update includes more information about Disney’s recent announcement that 28,000 cast members from the theme parks division will be laid off. Critics and analysts weigh in on Disney’s decision. Also featured this week: Disney resort news from Hawaii, Walt Disney World Discounts, and runDisney virtual race updates. Please watch this week’s video below.
For those of you that would rather read than watch the video, today’s Disney Parks News Update is detailed below.
Disney Layoffs
This week’s top story continues to be Disney laying off more than 25% of its 100,000 theme park employees. We have learned that 67% of the 28,000 theme park employees being laid off are part time employees. Also, 6,700 of the employees being laid off are Walt Disney World non union employees.
Disney is still negotiating the terms of the layoffs with the various unions. Therefore, we don’t yet have numbers for union employees being impacted by the layoffs.
However, we are hearing that all departments and all levels within the theme park division are being affected. From Imagineers to Janitorial staff, every department is being impacted. Of the employees so far that have gotten the call, it seems that December 4, 2020 is the effective date for most of the layoffs so far.
We won’t know the impact on the guest experience until after December 4. However it seems pretty obvious that the guest experience WILL be significantly impacted.
Orlando Sentinel’s Scott Maxwell Weighs In
Scott Maxwell at the Orlando Sentinel had a terrific commentary piece this week addressing the Orlando area’s dependence on tourism as the primary economic driver and primary source of employment. Maxwell included information about many of the other tourism related layoffs happening in and around the Orlando area, including 1,900 Sea World employees, 2,300 Universal Studios employees, and thousands of employees from various hotel employers. It’s a really interesting commentary and I encourage you to check it out.
Abigail Disney Chastises Disney
Also weighing in on Disney’s decision to layoff 28,000 employees was Abigail Disney. Abigail Disney is the granddaughter of Disney co-founder Roy Disney. She took to twitter to make her feelings about the layoffs known. In her Twitter thread about the layoffs, Abigail Disney chastised Disney for underpaying its theme park employees. She also emphasized the impact these layoffs will have on employees and their families.
She went on to say “If Disney had not spent down every penny of its cash on share buy-backs in 2019 (11.5 billion worth), perhaps there’d have been some dough on hand to ensure that even at a partial level they could continue to keep some of these workers on until things return to normal.”
Strong words, to be sure. However, it is important to realize that her words are likely to have little effect on Disney, a giant publicly traded company. Ms. Disney does not currently hold a position of power or influence at Disney. She is, nonetheless, a member of the Disney family and is expressing her personal opinions.
October Hours
In more optimistic news, Disney has recently been increasing park hours here and there. Most weekends in October now feature extended hours, with each park staying open about one hour later than the rest of the week. I think this is a result of increased capacity as well as Disney’s attempt to drive more guests to quick service and table service restaurants open later in the day.
We are hopeful that we will continue to see this happen into November and December. Keep in mind that Disney always reserves their right to change park hours, at their discretion, based on anticipated crowds, staffing levels and other parameters.
Crowd Levels
As we mentioned last week, Disney has been quietly increasing capacity levels and adding park reservation availability for both annual passholders, resort guests and ticket holders. We are seeing longer lines, especially on the weekends. This trend is expected to continue as Disney moves closer and closer to normal.
We can pretty confidently say that we do not expect crowd levels to return to the extremely low levels we were seeing in the first couple months the parks reopened. Guests are gaining more confidence both in traveling in general, and in Disney’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic specifically. I think Disney will continue gradually increasing capacity in response both to the State of Florida’s movement to Phase 3 and to guest reservations and demand.
We don’t yet know when (or even IF) we can expect Fast Pass+ to return. For now, the lack of Fast Pass+ actually helps the overall speed of the stand by lines. This is the result of cast members not needing to merge Fast Pass+ holders into the standby lines.
Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa
While this is not theme park news, this is a Disney resorts news story. Disney has announced that Disney’s Hawaiian resort, Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa will begin gradually reopening on November 1, 2020.
Disney is working with the State of Hawaii to coordinate their reopening plans. Potential guests are encouraged to check with the Hawaiian tourism board for specific travel restrictions that may include mandated quarantines or pre travel testing. Visit gohawaii.com/travel-restrictions to learn more.
Aulani Flexible Cancellation Policy
To encourage guests to visit Aulani, Disney has some new policies and discounts in place.
First, there is a flexible cancelation policy in place for Aulani guests through May 20, 2021. This policy enables guests to cancel their Aulani reservations up to 24 hours before arrival without penalty!
If you have been thinking about planning a Hawaiian vacation, but have been concerned about future Covid-19 developments, this flex policy is terrific. You can plan with confidence, knowing that if you need to reschedule or even cancel your trip you can do so without worry about losing money.
Aulani Discounts
Also in place to encourage guests to visit Aulani are discounts of up to 35%, depending on your dates and room types. This resort is truly extraordinary, and is an amazing vacation destination. If you’d like more information on planning an Aulani vacation, please contact me at Brooke@disneycastledreaming.com.
Walt Disney World Vacation Package Discounts
Staying on the topic of discounts but returning to the theme parks, Walt Disney World is currently offering a few discounts I wanted to make you aware of.
First up, Vacation package discounts. These are room and ticket packages, and require a minimum 4 night stay/4 day ticket package. You can save up to $500 over the non discounted prices of room & tickets for the same dates.
Discounts vary by resort type, and are good for stays through December 25, 2020. As we’ve discussed before, the Disney theme park experience is limited right now. Much of the entertainment is not happening. Character meals and character greetings are not happening. Fireworks and parades are not happening.
While this is a decent discount, it’s not outstanding. Especially when you consider the given the current limited hours and entertainment offerings. However, if you really want to visit between now and December 25, I want to make sure you save as much money as possible. This discount may make a winter trip possible for some of you.
Southern State Disney Discounts
Disney is actively wooing guests from “southern” states. I think the game plan here is to appeal to guests within driving distance. Especially since so many travelers are still not comfortable flying right now.
To take advantage of this discounts, you must have residency in one of the following states:
Alabama
Georgia
Kentucky
Louisiana
Mississippi
North Carolina
South Carolina
Tennessee
Virginia
West Virginia
These discounts are room only packages. Discounts are up to 30% for guests staying in a deluxe resort, and up to 20% for guests staying in a value resort. If you want to price out a potential trip for your family, please contact me at brooke@disneycastledreaming.com or by commenting below.
Florida Resident Discounts
The biggest discounts at the moment are for Florida residents, which makes a lot of sense. Florida residents are most likely to be able to visit in the immediate short term.
If you are a Florida resident (note: they do make you prove residency), there are some really terrific discounts right now. The big win: you are eligible for a four day flex ticket at $49/day, which is a savings of about 50% over a regular priced four day ticket.
Florida residents are also eligible for room only hotel discounts of up to 35% for deluxe resorts and up to 25% for Art of Animation (a Value resort, but value Plus in my opinion.) These Florida resident discounts are really good, even with the current limitations of hours, entertainment, character greetings etc.
runDisney Virtual Races
In runDisney news, the virtual races for both the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and the Princess Half Marathon Weekend for 2021 are still available to for registration. Race dates are:
Walt Disney World 2021 Marathon Weekend: January 7 – January 10, 2021
Princess Half Marathon 2021 Weekend: February 20 – 21, 2021
If you choose to do a virtual runDisney event, you are still going to train for your event. You will still complete the distance of the race you register for. Ideally, on the date the original runDisney onsite race was planned. The big difference? You will complete the race at home, on a route of your choosing or on your treadmill.
Your completion of the race is “required” for you to receive your finisher’s medal, which will be mailed out by Disney after the race weekends are complete. However, these virtual races are essentially done on the “honor system”. So if you do the race on a different day, or take more than 16 minutes per mile to complete the race, that will be ok.
Prices range from $49 – $500, depending on the race and/or the challenge you want to do, and whether you want to include the race tech shirts with your purchase.
Mom/Daughter Challenge
My mom and I have decided to do the Princess 10k virtual race together; I am also doing the Princess half marathon to complete the Fairy Tale Challenge. We’ll be posting our training updates both here and on the blog.
If you want to follow along, please make sure you subscribe both to our YouTube channel and to this blog.
If you’re considering a runDisney event, I offer “Couch to 10K”, “Couch to Half Marathon” and “Couch to runDisney Challenge” training programs that include weekly email coaching, training schedules and personalized support. Contact me to learn more. (Brooke@disneycastledreaming.com)
If you want to learn more about the runDisney experience, please check out this post.
And that’s it for this week’s Disney Parks News Update. If you have a topic you would like us to cover in the blog or on YouTube, please let us know by commenting below. You can also send an email to brooke@disneycastledreaming.com with your suggestions.
Disney has released more information about the reopening of Walt Disney World. The big news today? Disney cancels ALL dining reservations through the end of the year.
Disney has also cancelled all Fast Pass reservations. For more information about Disney’s reopening plans, please check out this post. The plans submitted to Orange County have been approved, and Disney is on track to reopen on July 11, 2020.
Disney Cancels Dining Reservations
Disney has officially cancelled all dining reservations through the end of this year. This is a pretty significant indication that Disney does NOT expect theme park operations and capacity to return to normalcy any time this year.
For those of us planning to visit Disney later this year, the canceling of dining reservations may have a big impact on our trip plans.
In their statement, Disney has told us that the cancellations are due to social distancing requirements. They have said that when they reopen, restaurants will be limited in capacity.
Disney plans to reopen dining reservations with limited numbers “closer to when the parks reopen”. They are also shrinking the Advance Dining Reservations window from 180 days to 60 days. This seems to be an “until further notice” change.
Fast Pass+ Reservations Suspended
In addition, Disney has suspended the Fast Pass+ reservation system. Fast Passes will not be available for any attractions when the parks reopen on July 11, 2020. Any existing Fast Pass+ reservations will be automatically cancelled. Disney will use additional queue space to manage capacity and social distancing. Disney has not provided any information as to if and when the Fast Pass+ reservation system will be reinstated. Fast Pass+ information has already been removed from the My Disney Experience.
Extra Magic Hours Suspended
Disney has also decided to suspend Extra Magic Hours temporarily as the parks reopen. Again, we don’t know how long this will last. It may end up that Extra Magic Hours will be suspended briefly, and will return quickly. It’s also possible that Extra Magic Hours will be suspended through the end of the year.
Reservations for Tours and Other Experiences
Disney has also cancelled reservations for all behind the scenes tours and other experience that require reservations. Disney has indicated that some experiences will remain closed for the time being. Other experiences will be available with limited capacity. Reservations for these experiences will likely become available closer to the parks reopening. As with everything else, the situation is fluid and frequent changes are likely.
Ticket Sales and Hotel Reservations
All NEW ticket sales and Disney Resort hotel reservations are temporarily paused. The priority right now for Disney is Guests with existing tickets and reservations. Guests that already have tickets and Annual Passholders will be able to make theme park reservations before new tickets are sold. There are no specific instructions yet on how those guests will be able to make their reservations. Disney has said they are going to be reaching out to those Guests soon to provide details.
New ticket sales and Disney Resort hotel reservations will resume at some point. Disney has stated their initial priority is taking care of existing ticket holders and Annual Passholders. The parks will be reopening with limited capacity, so I’m not sure when exactly when new reservations will be available. I will update you as soon as I have more information.
Masks ARE Required
As we mentioned in our previous post about the parks reopening, face masks or coverings WILL be required for all theme park guests and Cast Members. They will also be required for all Guests and Cast Members in Resort public areas.
Summary of All Changes
So, in short, visiting Walt Disney World this summer (and potentially, for the rest of the year) is going to look VERY different.
Face masks required
No Extra Magic Hours
Fast Pass+ system suspended
No fireworks
Nighttime spectaculars canceled
Social distancing
All dining reservations have been canceled
New reservation window of sixty days instead of 180 days
All reservations for tours and other experiences have been canceled
No character greetings
Playgrounds closed
No water play areas
“Makeover” experiences (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo Boutique, for example) are canceled
Disney is working with the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and other health experts to do everything they can to protect the health and safety of both Guests and Cast Members.
Should You Visit Disney This Year?
Of course, many of these changes are disappointing. If you’ve been looking forward to your trip all year (or longer!), canceling or postponing can be really sad. However, if you have a “first” trip planned during this time, I highly recommend you reschedule. So many of the experiences are going to be limited, I think you will be disappointed. If you are a frequent visitor, and know you’ll be visiting again next year, you may not be as disappointed by some of the “missing” features during this phased reopening time. Canceling or postponing can be a very difficult decision. If you need advice, or would like to talk it through with someone, please feel free to reach out. I’m here, and I understand. brooke@disneycastledreaming.com.
It is important to keep in mind that Disney is trying to keep everyone safe. If you have a trip booked, and want to cancel as a result of these changes, Disney is working with everyone to reschedule or offer refunds. Contact your travel agent or Disney to learn more.
Personally, I think with the reduced capacity and all the other changes, the best visitors during these early phases are going to be local Florida residents and Disney Annual Passholders. Likely to be frequent visitors, I think locals and Passholders will be less impacted by all the changes. They’ll also be less likely to feel disappointed or that they’re “missing out” on experiences that have been canceled for the time being.
What Can We Expect in 2021?
Information about next year and the impact of this pandemic on the theme parks in 2021 is pretty sparse. I suspect we will learn more as the theme parks reopen, and we see how Guests respond. In China, Guests have been very cooperative with Disney. Chinese Guests have responded well to new rules and restrictions. This has resulted in Shanghai Disneyland expanding capacity.
However, it is important to recognize that visitors to Disney World in Florida come from all over the world and from many different cultures. We don’t yet know if Guests in Florida will be as cooperative as those in China. We hope so, and we hope that we don’t see an increase in new Covid-19 cases as the parks reopen. This is going to be a “wait and see” situation.
Other Florida Theme Parks
Universal Theme Parks open next week, as does Legoland. Gatorland has already reopened. Sea World is reopening June 11, followed by Disney World on July 11. Busch Gardens in Tampa has submitted plans for reopening, which have been approved. No reopening date has been announced yet.
Hopefully, by mid August we will have more information on how the reopening plans are succeeding for all the Florida theme parks.
The good news is that all the theme parks ARE reopening. It will be different, but it is happening. Hopefully, as the months pass, things will return to something closer to normal for theme park visitors. It is time, I believe, to start planning our vacations for next year. If you need help, I am available! Email brooke@disneycastledreaming.com.
Have you ever wanted to have a private photo session inside the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World? Have you wished you had a photographer with you to capture a special moment or event? Disney has a new offering that might be what you are looking for. With the new PhotoPass offering “Capture Your Moment”, Disney has made it possible for you to schedule a private photo session inside Magic Kingdom.
Private Photo Session Inside Magic Kingdom?
Disney, forever on the lookout for ways to make us spend our money, has come up with a new PhotoPass offering. The new PhotoPass offering is called “Capture Your Moment”. When you book Capture Your Moment, you are booking 20 minutes of time with a Disney PhotoPass photographer inside the Magic Kingdom theme park during regular park hours.
Sometimes, you want a PhotoPass photographer to be focused exclusively on you and or your family for longer than the one – three pictures most PhotoPass photographers have time to take. Examples include baby announcements, birthdays, proposals, anniversaries, baby gender reveals, and family reunions.
Disney has obviously seen the professional photographers roaming around the parks with their clients, taking pictures. They’ve also seen the gorgeous pictures online taken by professional photographers to commemorate engagements, baby announcements, girls’ weekends, and many other events. Since, as we know, Disney wants ALL our money, they certainly don’t want us hiring outside photographers to capture our special moments!
Private Photo Session Inside Magic Kingdom: The Basics
Available in the Magic Kingdom only. (At least right now!)
$50 for a 20-minute session; $100 for a 40-minute session.
The short answer? No. Disney wants to be very clear that is NOT for wedding photos.
Disney also made it very clear this will NOT replace the private Bridal Photo Session available for both Disney and non Disney brides and grooms. These pricey sessions happen in the early morning hours before the park opens, and are truly private.
Bridal and wedding attire is specifically prohibited for the PhotoPass sessions, so if you’re going to do a Capture Your Moment Disney PhotoPass photo shoot, plan to avoid the floor length gown, the glamorous white dress or the tuxedo.
If you want to learn more about a Disney Bridal Portrait photo session, check out this post and this post.
What Locations Are Available?
Disney is not releasing location information or options for these sessions. At least, not yet. Current policy dictates that your photographer will review the location options with you when you meet for your session. Once your photographer has given you the options, you will be able to choose your location.
Disney is doing this for a couple of reasons. One, they want the flexibility to adapt to park events, crowds and activities. Two, they want the flexibility to schedule sessions at the same time in different areas of the park. Three (and this is totally my own suspicious nature), Disney may not want guests to focus on particular locations. For example, I suspect Cinderella Castle may be a preferred backdrop for many guests. However, stage shows, parades and Castle projection shows will make that challenging many times each day. So perhaps Disney hopes to dissuade guests from assuming they can take photos at the Castle.
Many of the marketing pictures Disney has released with this announcement do include the Castle in the background. Perhaps I’m being too cynical.
I can envision a scenario where Castle locations are available initially as a test balloon. Once Disney sees which locations are the most popular, I suspect pricing will be revised. Maybe a tier structure will be introduced for certain locations. I suspect we will eventually see a tier structure at some point, based on my observations of Disney business practices over many years.
Can I Request a Particular PhotoPass Photographer?
At the moment, it does not sound like you can request your photographer but you could certainly try. If you have a particular PhotoPass photographer that works at the Magic Kingdom that you like, you could request them for your Capture Your Moment session. It’s not clear how many PhotoPass photographers are available for this offering. It is also not clear if the pool is limited to the most experienced PhotoPass photographers.
If you do request a particular photographer for your Capture Your Moment session, please let me know how it goes. Those of us that live out of state probably don’t have a favorite PhotoPass photographer. However, I bet local residents that visit the parks often have favorites.
Are the Photos Going to Be Digital or Print?
All pictures taken by your PhotoPass photographer during your session will be digital. As with all PhotoPass pictures, you can visit a PhotoPass center in one of the parks, and purchase physical prints of the digital pictures if you want to. Generally, if you have the downloaded digital files, you will be happier with printing the photos from somewhere like Shutterfly or MPix. More options are available, and prices are almost always better.
The price of your Capture Your Moment session does not include the actual pictures taken during your session. Let me say that again: the digital files of the photos taken during your session are NOT included in the session price of $50. The good news is that if you already planned to purchase Memory Maker (which I highly recommend for all visitors!), or if you are an Annual Passholder, you will have access to these pictures, along with any other PhotoPass photos or attraction photos.
Memory Maker
With Memory Maker you have up to 30 days after your trip to download all pictures and videos attached to your My Disney Experience account. Because individual downloads start at $14.50 per photo, it doesn’t take long for Memory Maker (at $169 for advance purchase) to be a reasonably good deal. There are currently 13 attractions that take picture or video during the ride, and as long as you have a Magic Band (or scan your ticket at the end of the ride on your picture), all those videos and photos WILL be on your account. For more information on Memory Maker, please visit this post.
Disney does offer a one-day Memory Maker for $69. If you’re doing a super short trip, or you really aren’t interested in any of your ride photos or PhotoPass pictures from any of your other park days, this option is worth considering. As long as you schedule your PhotoPass Capture Your Moment session on the day you have your one-day Memory Maker on your account, all the pictures from your session will be available in your Memory Maker. Alternatively, you’ll have the ability to view the pictures and purchase the downloads on an individual basis.
Scheduling Your Private Photo Session Inside Magic Kingdom
It is recommended that you schedule your session in advance (Call 407-939-7758) to guarantee availability. However, there are currently some same-day sessions are available.
You cannot be late for your session. Once you have reserved your session, you’ll be told where to meet your photographer. Disney states that if you are late, your session will not be extended. As an example: If you have a 20 minute session that is supposed to start at 3:30 pm, you arrive at 3:45 pm, your session will last 5 minutes. Disney says under no circumstances will the sessions be extended.
Things to Consider
If you’ve always wanted to do a private photo session inside Magic Kingdom, the Capture Your Moment session may be a perfect solution for you. However, there are a few things you want to consider before booking your session.
The Capture Your Moment sessions will occur during regular park hours. This means you will likely have other guests in the background of your pictures.
You have the option to book 2 sessions back to back. This would give you 40 minutes of time with your PhotoPass photographer. Again, this whole session will be inside Magic Kingdom during regular park hours. BUT this does mean you (and your family) are sacrificing park time. This could frustrate kids eager to go ride rides and have fun.
The skill and talent of the in-park PhotoPass photographer varies from photographer to photographer. Some PhotoPass photographers are pretty good, and are able to adapt to changes in light and shadows. Others are basically able to push the button and maybe notice if you’re in focus or not. There there are varying levels of quality amongst the PhotoPass photographers, so that’s an important consideration for readers considering one of these sessions.
The cost of the individual pictures are likely to be high. Of course, if you have Memory Maker or are an Annual Passholder, your photos are included. If you have to purchase the pictures individually, they will likely start at $14.50 per photo download. If you end up really liking all your pictures, the pricing can add up really quickly. (Note: You CAN add Memory Maker during your trip. It costs more to do it this way, $199 versus the $169 advance purchase. So if you like at least 10-14 pictures, you’ll want to add memory maker. Then you’ll get all pictures through Memory Maker. This will save money over purchasing individually).
This could be tough to do as a surprise. Since you are meeting your photographer at the start time of your session, and THEN choosing a location, it could be challenging to set up a surprise for the photographer to capture. (A proposal, for instance.) I suspect PhotoPass will find a way to help you, but I don’t know for sure. This could add unnecessary stress to your big moment.
Potential Quality Issues
Let’s talk a little more about the potential quality issue. One would assume that the photographers used for the Capture Your Moment sessions will be skilled and/or Senior PhotoPass photographers. There are definitely very good PhotoPass photographers out there. There are many stories of PhotoPass photographers that really loved their job and got really good. They emerged as very skilled photographers that eventually joined the Disney Fine Art Photography team or went out on their own. However, my PhotoPass library can testify that there are also some not-so-great PhotoPass photographers out there.
Again, I am assuming that Disney will choose its best PhotoPass photographers for these sessions. However, I can also envision a universe where these are popular and in high demand and require all hands on deck. This could result in a situation where you pay $50 for your session and end up with pictures you’re not happy. I think initially, these are a little bit of book at your own risk. Especially right now while this is a new offering.
Once we’ve had a chance to get reports back from people that have booked these sessions, I’ll feel more comfortable recommending them strongly. I want to know how it went, where they took photos, what locations were offered, etc. I will keep my ear to the ground on this one and let you know what I hear.
Capture YOUR Moment
Right now, I am cautiously optimistic about this new offering from PhotoPass. $50 for 20 minutes is quite a bit of money. However, if it’s a once in a lifetime or a very rarely in lifetime occasion, I could see it being a fun and special experience.
For example, if you’re at Disney World to celebrate your grandma’s 90th birthday and you want to have a lot of pictures of the whole family, this could be your solution. A group of pictures of Grandma with all the grandkids; just Grandma by herself; the girls with Grandma; Grandma with her children; the boys with Grandma –you guys know what I mean. You just can’t hold up a regular PhotoPass photographer for very long and take a bunch of different groupings. So this might be a great solution for you!
Another scenario: If you’re planning a special “in the moment” event and you want lots of pictures, this could also be a perfect session for you. For example, if you are planning to propose or tell your whole family you’re expecting a baby. This could be terrific for that. When my husband proposed to me, he did it at a regular PhotoPass photographer. We got lucky because he didn’t have a line, and he got pictures of the whole thing. (Of course, it was a pretty quick moment. It was following our first marathon, and I initially thought he’d fallen!).
Private Photo Session Inside Magic Kingdom: Final Thoughts
Your mileage may vary on whether you find value in this package or not. If you really want a private photo session inside Magic Kingdom, and don’t mind the presence of other guests in the background, this might be for you. Also, if these are talented photographers and you get a bunch of good pictures out of it, you might want to schedule this. Finally, if you already planned on buying memory maker, you may find this has value for you.
If you’ve been reading my blog for any period of time, you probably know that I am a huge proponent of PhotoPass. Mainly because I love pictures. Before PhotoPass, I always came home from vacation with tons of pictures. Unfortunately, I was almost never in any of them. PhotoPass makes it possible for your entire family to get into many pictures. My favorite souvenir from vacation is almost always the photo book I make after our trip, filled with pictures we took and pictures taken of us by PhotoPass photographers.
So, for someone like me, Capture Your Moment might be something I will consider at some point. Maybe for an anniversary or another special event. However, I still think $50 is a lot of money for 20 minutes. Who knows what the future holds? One of the few regrets I have from our Disney Fairy Tale Wedding trip is that we were unable to do a Bridal Portrait shoot at the Magic Kingdom. I really wanted that darn picture with Frank and I in our wedding clothes in front of Cinderella Castle. With the rules and schedules in place at the time, we just weren’t able to make it happen. So, perhaps a more casual private photo shoot inside Magic Kingdom with PhotoPass photographers might be worth the cost? I’m not sure.
What are your thoughts on this offering? Is this something you think you might want to take advantage of? What occasion would you consider “worth it”? Please comment below with your thoughts.
Walt Disney World’s new Skyliner Transportation system has reached an important milestone. Can you believe that Disney Skyliner has already transported its one millionth guest?
As you may remember, Disney Skyliner opened on September 29, 2019, so in just a few short weeks, one million guests have already ridden on the new system! Guests are raving about the system. Common reports are that the system is smooth and fast. Many guests talk about how beautiful the views are, and how secure they feel in the system.
Disney posted a new video to celebrate one million guest riders on Skyliner:
Doesn’t that look like fun? I can’t wait to ride the darn thing personally, and I’m afraid of heights! I think it looks amazing, though.
Nothing is Perfect: Skyliner Accident Shuts Down System
Of course, as you have probably heard, Skyliner has not completed it’s first month without some challenges. Two weeks ago, there was a minor malfunction at the Disney Riviera Resort Skyliner station. One of the gondolas got stuck, and several Skyliner gondolas collided in the station.
The Epcot Skyliner line was immediately shut down, and fortunately no one was seriously hurt. Guests were inconvenienced, having to stay in the gondolas out on the Skyliner cables. Some guests were stuck in the gondolas for as long as three hours; and it appears that Disney did NOT communicate with them what was going on. Ultimately, three guests were transported to the hospital to get checked out.
Evacuation
Ultimately, quite a few guests ended up being evacuated from the gondolas. Disney had purchased special equipment for the Reedy Creek Fire Department specifically for Skyliner gondola evacuations, and of course, LOTS of testing for the evacuation procedures had been done prior to opening day. The good news is that the Reedy Creek Fire Department and Disney team members reacted quickly and the evacuations went smoothly. Nonetheless, no matter quickly or how smoothly the evacuations were handled, I’m sure it was pretty scary for those guests.

What Happened?
Several gondolas were lightly damaged during the incident. The gondolas that collided in the station all had their plexiglass vents open to allow for maximum ventilation. When the gondolas collided, those vents broke in some cases. Fairly minor problem, and I’m sure they were repaired quickly. The gondolas are equipped with insulated edges, and are designed to be stored, nestled against each other. So the actual structure of the gondolas and the gondolas themselves were not damaged at all; it was just the glass in the vents that were on the exterior of the gondolas that was damaged.
Disney released a statement on Sunday, October 6, 2019, the day following the incident. “We have a team diligently looking into the cause of the malfunction on the Epcot line of the Disney Skyliner. We have been in contact with the guests, many of whom were on the Skyliner for more than three hours until we were able to restart the system. We express our sincere apologies for the inconvenience and continue to work with each guest individually.”
I suspect this statement means that the guests that were inconvenienced were compensated by Disney in some way for the incident. At least I hope so. I mean, if I were stuck in a gondola 30-60 feet off the ground for three hours, I would probably be a basket case! I did read that the guests were eventually told there were emergency packs under their seats that contained water and cool packs. Good to know. Scary situation though!
How Did Disney Respond?
As a result of the incident, the Skyliner system was shut down for several days. Disney brought in the manufacturer and conducted a comprehensive review of the Skyliner systems and operations with them. After the review, Disney released a statement indicating that they making adjustments to their processes and training. Disney also stated that they would be improving how they communicate with guests during their travel on the Skyliner system.
The Skyliner system and gondolas were designed by Doppelmayr Garaventa Group. Doppelmayr is an Australian company known for manufacturing chairlifts, cable cars and gondolas for amusement parks and ski resorts. Doppelmayr also builds urban “people moving systems”. They’ve produced more than 14,600 installations in 89 countries. Given the high visibility of any Disney project I suspect Doppelmayr has done everything they can to make sure this system is one of their best.
Disney also stated that Disney Skyliner may slow down or come to complete stops during the ride. These “slow downs” or stops are primarily due to accommodating guests that need extra time to load into their cabin. As smoothly and as quickly as the system moves, it moves too fast to safely load wheelchair bound guests, slower moving guests, or special needs guests without slowing down or stopping the Skyliner. Looks like the moral of the story is that Disney doesn’t want guests to panic anytime they get stopped on the line, thinking it’s another accident. I am choosing to believe that Disney and the manufacturer have figured out what caused the accident, and taken steps to ensure that it will NOT happen again.
A Magical Way to Travel the World!
There are a few things you may want to know before your first ride on Disney’s Skyliner.
Because Skyliner is designed as a transportation system rather than an attraction, you cannot board Skyliner and just stay on it and ride around the whole system. There are six total stations, visiting four Disney resorts and two Walt Disney World theme parks. (Note: one of the stations is a “turn around” station, located between Epcot and Disney’s Riviera Resort. This is a pass through station for guests; gondolas will not load or unload at this station).
Certain stations are “end of the line” stations, and will necessitate that you exit the gondola. If you are continuing on to another destination, you will be changing to another line on another gondola.
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort/Disney’s Pop Century Resort
These two resorts share one station. Both resorts are located on either side of a small man made lake, and each resort has a pathway to the Skyliner station.
This station is the beginning of the Skyliner line (or the end of it, depending on whether you are coming or going!). If arriving at this station, you will always be required to exit your gondola. If you want to continue your ride, you can get back on again, and travel on from here.
Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort
The Skyliner station at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort is the central hub for the whole system. Extra gondolas are stored here, and this is the largest station. All the various Skyliner lines ultimately go through here. If you boarding at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, you will be taken directly to your destination without having to disembark your gondola. From here, you can travel directly to Hollywood Studios, Epcot, Disney’s Riviera Resort or Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and Disney’s Pop Century Resort.
If you have come to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort’s Skyliner station from another station, you may have to get off your gondola and change lines and board a different gondola, depending on your destination. For example, if you depart Disney’s Art of Animation Resort/Disney’s Pop Century Resort and want to go to Epcot or Disney’s Riviera Resort, you will be transferring gondolas at the Caribbean Beach Resort Skyliner station.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
If you board the Skyliner at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and are going to Disney’s Art of Animation Resort/Disney’s Pop Century Resort, you will not transfer at Disney’s Caribbean Resort Skyliner Station. You will continue on through the station directly to your destination. However, if you are heading to any other destination, you will need to exit your gondola at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and transfer to another gondola heading to your destination.
Disney’s Riviera Resort
Disney’s newest resort, the European themed Riviera Resort doesn’t actually open until December, so right now, guests can’t board Skyliner from Disney’s Riviera Resort, nor can they disembark here (except in the case of an emergency.) Currently, the gondolas pass through the station without stopping. The station is staffed with cast members, and is ready for its opening day on December 16, 2019.
Once the Resort and station are open, guests that board here heading for Epcot will not need to transfer at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. However, guests heading to any other Skyliner destination will need to transfer at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.
Also, guests heading to Epcot from Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort will pass through Disney’s Riviera Resort Skyliner Station and continue on to Epcot.
Epcot
Epcot is an end-of-the-line station. All guests arriving at this station must exit their gondola. If you’re planning to continue on to another destination, you will board a different gondola and head to Disney’s Riviera Resort station. If you are planning to go to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort/Disney’s Pop Century Resort or Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, you will stay on your gondola through the Riviera station, and continue on the Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort station, where you will disembark and either end your travels, or transfer to a different line.
Traveling on the Skyliner System
When you arrive at Caribbean Beach Resort station and want to transfer and take a different Skyliner route to another destination, you will exit your gondola. You will pick where you want to go, and enter the line for that route. Be prepared for at least a short wait (5 – 10 minutes) in the new line if you are traveling during busy times.
The busiest stations for loading are currently Epcot and Hollywood Studios. You can expect long waits at park close (up to 40 minutes on busy days), much as you would expect with the parking lot trams, buses and monorails at this same time.
Your Skyliner gondola accelerates as you exit each station, and decelerates as you approach the next station, even if it is a turn around or pass through station. The maximum speed of the gondolas in transit is 11 mph. When they are passing through the station, they slow down to about 1 mph for loading/unloading. (For comparison, most people start their treadmills at 2.5 – 3 mph). The gondolas load very similarly to the PeopleMover or Spaceship Earth. The gondolas will be stopped if guests need more time to load and/or unload.
Travelers
Each gondola CAN seat up to ten people, however, Disney does not seem to be “packing them in” at this time. Most gondolas seem to be traveling with 5-8 guests, based on anecdotal stories from guests. That may change as busier days approach, of course. Generally if you have 5-8 people in your group, you will likely have a gondola to yourselves. Smaller groups or single riders can expect to share with others.
All guests MUST be seated at all times in the gondolas, no standing is allowed.
Strollers are allowed on the gondolas, as long as they fit within a 30″ x 48″ area.
There is no height restriction for guests to ride Skyliner. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult, however.
Wheelchairs, Scooters and Mobility Devices
There are special gondolas designed to fit wheelchairs and ECV’s (scooters). Keep in mind, these gondolas are limited to six guests. There is a special loading area for guests with mobility issues, or that have wheelchairs and ECVs. The gondolas come to a complete stop in this area, and rejoin the main line once loaded. Guests will just need to inform a cast member when they arrive that they have wheelchairs, ECV’s or mobility issues.
No Air Conditioning
As you may have heard, the gondolas in the Disney Skyliner system do NOT have air conditioning. However, the gondolas do feature reflective glass and cross ventilation. According to Disney, these features will help ensure the gondolas remain “comfortable”, regardless of exterior temperatures.
I’m not sure how effective these features will be in the high heat of summer, when temperatures top 100 degrees; the Skyliner system opened at the end of September. While some hot days do still occur in October and November, we generally can expect temperatures to stay in the eighties and nineties, rather than exceed 100 degrees.
Early reports from guests indicate that while the gondolas are moving, there is a nice cross ventilation going if the vents are opened. Mentions have been made that on rainy days, water does “rain in” if the vents are open, but if the vents are closed, it gets a little stuffy. Time will tell if those are isolated incidents or common occurrences. Perhaps the vents can be angled to keep out the rain? I haven’t been able to check this out personally yet, but I will keep you posted!
Travel Times
Disney has released these time estimates for the various Skyliner routes. Based on guest reports, these seem to be pretty accurate.
Traveling between Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort: Less than four minutes.
Traveling from Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort to Disney’s Riviera Resort: Two to three minutes.
Skylining from Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort to Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Five to six minutes.
Traveling from Disney’s Riviera Resort to the International Gateway at Epcot: Approximately nine minutes.
Skylining from Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort to the International Gateway at Epcot: Ten to twelve minutes.
The Skyliner system official operating hours are 45 minutes before park opening (Hollywood Studios and/or Epcot) and one hour after park close (also Hollywood Studios and/or Epcot hours). Keep in mind that hours are subject to change due to inclement weather. Skyliner will not operate during high winds, heavy rains or when there is lightning. Basically, if Disney would shut down Test Track or tell you to get out of the pool, assume that Skyliner will not operate.
Disney Skyliner Transports Its One Millionth Guest
Despite the brief setback, Skyliner is going strong! Disney reports that Skyliner transported its one millionth guest this week. At that rate we will be talking about 100,000,000 riders sometime next year. Crazy!
Here’s another video from Disney featuring guest reactions to Disney Skyliner.
Do you have any questions about the Disney Skyliner system? Please comment below, and I will find the answers for you!
It’s hard to believe, but after more than two years of construction, Disney Skyliner is ready for take off! Disney Skyliner officially takes flight for Walt Disney World park and resort guests on Sunday, September 29, 2019. However, Disney Skyliner has been taking special guests and members of the press on test “flights” all week.
Early reports are VERY positive, and I cannot WAIT for my first ride!
Disney Skyliner Takes Flight
I am so excited to check out this latest mode of transportation at Walt Disney World! Take a look at the latest video of Disney Skyliner, released by Disney earlier this week:
Partly a means of transportation from one park or resort to another, Disney Skyliner also looks like one heck of an attraction! The views from the Skyliner gondolas look amazing!
Skyliner visits both Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Epcot theme parks. In addition, Skyliner visits four resorts: Disney’s Caribbean Resort, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, and the NEW Disney’s Riviera Resort (opening in December).
Skyliner Merchandise
Perhaps most exciting for the shoppers among us, there is LOTS of new merchandise available at Walt Disney World starring Disney Skyliner!
You’ll be able to find Skyliner merchandise in select locations; predominantly at resorts and theme parks on the Skyliner line. Merchandise will be available at the International Gateway at Epcot, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Riviera Resort, when it opens in December. There is no official mention of Skyliner merchandise being featured at the World of Disney Store in Disney Springs, but I have a hard time believing we won’t be able to find SOMETHING Skyliner themed there, don’t you?
Check out these ADORABLE Christmas ornaments. Has a Disney attraction ever been MORE perfect for an ornament?

Similar to the ornaments are these models. If you want to have your very own Skyliner gondola in your home, one of these might be for you!

But wait, there’s more! (Shocking, I know!) Check out some of these options:

Annual Passholders, do not fear! There is (of course!!!) special Disney Skyliner merchandise just for you. Take a look:

And, of course, because this is Disney and we know they want ALL our money, I feel fairly confident in assuring you that there is much, much more in the Disney Skyliner merchandise line. And certainly, some holiday themed Skyliner merchandise will be coming. I don’t know that for sure, but I feel reasonably confident, don’t you?
Are You Ready To Take Flight on Skyliner?
I love how colorful the gondolas (also called cabins) are. Featuring eight colors and a TON of graphics featuring characters from Disney movies, theme park attractions and traditional cartoons, I think watching Skyliner from the ground is going to be almost as much fun as riding it.
Each Disney Skyliner cabin can handle up to 10 guests, including those traveling in wheelchairs or with strollers. The gondolas are NOT air conditioned; however, they are vented, and Disney assures us that the cabins will be comfortable as air moves through them as the cabins move through the system.
#DisneyTransportationGoals
I think an excellent adventure plan for Disney guests looking for a challenge will be to plan to enjoy all FOUR methods of official Disney transportation on a given day. For example, you could start your day via bus and head to Hollywood Studios to start your day. From there, you could take the Skyliner to Epcot, and then travel by monorail to the Magic Kingdom. From Magic Kingdom, you could take a boat to the Ticket and Transport Center or one of the nearby resorts, and have dinner or drinks to celebrate your success. Even more fun would be to plan stops along both the monorail lines and the Skyliner lines. Lots of terrific options for Walt Disney World Resort guests!

Great news! Disney has announced that the new Skyliner Transportation system will officially open for Disney World guests on September 29! Testing has been going on for several months now, and I don’t know about you, but I have been DYING for the official announcement of WHEN the Skyliner gondolas would be ready for passengers. And finally, we have our answer! The Skyliner gondolas will be ready for YOU to ride on September 29, 2019. Whooooooo Hoooooo!
Disney released this happy video along with the announcement:
Surprised?
I’m a teensy surprised that the Gondolas won’t be “LIVE” before Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at Hollywood Studios on August 29. I had thought Disney would try and open the Skyliner Transporation System before that deadline to provide additional transportation options for guests, PLUS provide another “attraction” to absorb guests. My thought was Skyliner Gondolas could help with crowd management. However, it makes sense that it opens a month later. I suspect Disney has their hands full already with making sure they are ready for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when it opens.
How gorgeous does that look? I mean, seriously! I am SUPER excited to ride one of these Gondolas through the whole route. Remember: The Skyliner Transportation System will visit four resorts, plus Epcot and Hollywood Studios. Here are the four resorts:
Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort
Disney’s Pop Century Resort
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort
Disney’s NEW Riviera Resort (opens in December)
Just the Facts, Ma’m.
TECHNICALLY, Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort are sharing one Skyliner Station. The Station is located on the lake between the two resorts and is a short walk from either resort. So, one stop on the Skyliner Transportation System, but TWO resorts served. More bang for the buck, I guess. But it sounds like the line goes further than it does when I say it goes to four resorts and two theme parks, so I wanted to clarify.
There are more than 300 gondolas on the Skyliner Transportation line. Each gondola (also being called “cabins”) can seat up to ten guests. All gondolas are wheelchair accessible, according to Disney.
I’ve done several articles about the Skyliner system previously. If you’d like to check those out, please go to any of the links below:
So, does knowing Skyliner Gondolas will officially open on September 29 have any impact on your vacation plans for this year? If you’ve been on the fence about a Fall 2019 visit to Disney World, does this push you over the edge? What about Holiday 2019 planning? Does the official opening of the Skyliner system make you MORE eager to visit Disney World for the Holidays this year?
There are still some great packages available for fall, and I’m expecting holiday 2019 packages to be released any day now. If you’re thinking about visiting Disney in 2019, NOW is the time to plan. Email brooke@disneycastledreaming.com for more information or to get started!
If you’ve ever stayed at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you probably know about Extra Magic Hours. Extra Magic Hours (EMH) are just one of the benefits of staying on Disney property. EMH are a HUGE advantage for guests who want to minimize their time waiting in lines. With regular Extra Magic Hours, there are certain days each week when Disney resort guests can enter the EMH park one hour earlier than all other guests. Alternatively, EMH may mean staying up to three hours later than all non-resort guests at the EMH park.
This fall, Disney is taking Extra Magic Hours to a whole new level with Extra EXTRA Magic Hours!
DAILY Extra Magic Hours
Beginning August 29, 2019 and running through November 2, 2019, Disney will begin offering DAILY Extra Extra Magic Hours. Extra Extra Magic Hours (EEMH) will be offered in three of the four theme parks at Walt Disney World.
Magic Kingdom: Extra Extra Magic Hours will happen every day from 7 am to 8 am at the Magic Kingdom for resort guests. Just like with regular Extra Magic Hours, not all attractions are open during Extra Extra Magic Hours. Extra Magic Hours and Extra Extra Magic Hours feature the same attractions–favorite rides in both Tomorrowland and Fantasyland.
Animal Kingdom: Extra Extra Magic Hours will happen every day from 7 am to 8 am at the Animal Kingdom. Pandora – The World of Avatar attractions ARE included. Also included are other attractions throughout Animal Kingdom. (The same attractions currently open during regular Extra Magic Hours).
Hollywood Studios: Extra Extra Magic Hours will happen every day from 6 am to 9 am (That’s THREE HOURS PEOPLE!!!). The EEMH WILL include Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land and select other attractions. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and its experiences are subject to capacity. NOTE: From August 29 – 31, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will open at 6 am to ALL guests, not just resort guests. The Extra Extra Magic Hours for Hollywood Studios for Resort Guests will begin September 1.
Wait, What About Epcot?
Epcot absorbs crowds better than any of the other three theme parks. In addition, Extra Magic Hours are not as necessary or popular at Epcot as they are at the other three parks. Also, at Epcot, Future World opens at 9 am (usually) and then World Showcase opens at 11 am. Morning Extra Magic Hours may frustrate Epcot visitors that wanted to visit World Showcase during EMH but World Showcase is not part of morning EMH.
Epcot will continue to have regular Extra Magic Hours on select days, just like it does now. Epcot will NOT be getting Extra Extra Magic Hours. Note: Of course this policy COULD change later in the summer, but I don’t expect it to.
Also, keep in mind that the popular Epcot Food and Wine Festival will be running during this time, and that’s the big attraction at Epcot in the fall. Opening at 7 am wouldn’t be very beneficial as I don’t think they want to open all those wine and food kiosks that early! 😉
Why?
Disney has introduced these new Extra Extra Magic Hours in anticipation of record crowd levels this fall. With the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios coming August 29, interest in a Walt Disney World vacation has never been higher! Disney is anticipating very high guest demand for its most popular attractions throughout Walt Disney World, but most especially at Hollywood Studios, for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
Disney is trying to ensure the satisfaction of resort guests by guaranteeing them more opportunities to access the parks with smaller crowds, before the parks open to the public each day. Theoretically, if guests are early risers and willing to be up and at the parks early in the morning, they are more likely to be able to visit more of the attractions they’ll want to visit.
This policy also helps add more value to staying on Disney property. Disney is always looking for ways to get more guests to stay on Disney property and these new Extra Extra Magic Hours are a great step in that direction. All those extra available hours EVERY DAY add a lot of value to your theme park tickets!
The Fine Print
Extra Extra Magic Hours require a valid theme park admission and hotel ID. Note: If you are using your Magic Bands as your room keys and your theme park tickets, your Magic Band will serve as both theme park admission and hotel ID.
If you do NOT have the Park Hopper or Park Hopper Plus option on your tickets, you will be spending the day in whichever park you choose for Extra Extra Magic Hours. In other words, if you DON’T have Park Hopper, and start your day at 6 am at Hollywood Studios, you will be in Hollywood Studios for the entire day (unless you leave the park and go back to your resort, of course). You will NOT be able to visit a different park after Extra Extra Magic Hours are over.
If you DO Have Park Hopper, you can “hop” to any other park you choose throughout the day, regardless of where you go for Extra Extra Magic Hours.
All Attractions are NOT Part of Extra Extra Magic
Not all Walt Disney World attractions are available with Extra Magic Hours or Extra Extra Magic Hours. Park hours and participating attractions for Extra Magic Hours or Extra Extra Magic Hours are subject to change without notice. All participating attractions and experiences are subject to capacity limitations and cancellation.
Fast Passes are NOT available during Extra Magic Hours or Extra Extra Magic Hours.
Will Extra Extra Magic Hours Be Extended After November 2?
I don’t know. This is the first time Disney has offered DAILY extended hours for resort guests. Obviously, this will significantly impact Disney’s daily operating costs–a lot will depend on how successful this program is during its initial offering. Guest response and feedback will also significantly impact whether Disney either extends Extra Extra Magic Hours, or ever offers it again during busy periods.
If it has a major impact on guest satisfaction and crowd flow AND they see profits from people staying longer in the parks and spending more money, I think its very likely that we could see something like this again in the future.
Until Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is actually open, and we see the way Disney manages crowds in and around that new “Land”, it’s difficult to anticipate WHAT will happen from a crowd flow capacity in ALL the parks, once Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is finally open.
What do YOU think?
What do you think of this new policy? As someone who almost always stays on property, I’m pretty excited! We are early risers on vacation, and always take advantage of EMH. However, we often park hop later in the day if the “chosen” park gets too crowded. It will be interesting to see what happens when three parks are the “chosen” park, won’t it?
