Changes Announced for 2025 WDW Marathon

Are you planning to run in January’s Walt Disney World Marathon? runDisney has announced changes to the January 2025 WDW Marathon.

Each year, runDisney kicks off their race season with the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. WDW Race Weekend includes a 5K, a 10K, a half marathon and a full marathon. There are also challenges: the Goofy challenge, for racers who complete both the half marathon and the full marathon; and the Dopey challenge, for participants the complete all four races: the 5k, the 10k, the half and the full.

runDisney: Consistency, year after year

There are many things about race weekend that are predictable that racers can count on to happen every year.  For example: the 5K is on Thursday, the 10K is on Friday, the half is on Saturday and the full is on Sunday. There is an Expo that will begin on Wednesday and run through Saturday. There will be a lot of limited edition, fairly expensive race weekend merchandise for sale. Some of it will sell out VERY quickly. All four medals (six, if you include the challenge medals) will look great and will have some weight to them. The races will all start REALLY early, and racers need to be in their corrals SUPER early.

There will be hundreds, if not thousands, of porta potties near the starting corrals and throughout the courses. As many as 25,000 racers will be on the course for the races. There will be character photo opportunities throughout each course. We all know there will be water stations every mile or so throughout the courses.  Disney makes sure there are Disney PhotoPass photographers taking pictures of racers during the theme park sections of the races as well as at the finish lines and in the post race areas.

There are many things you can count on with runDisney races. They are very consistent and dependable. They charge a lot for these races and the overall race experience does reflect that, at least to some extent. As a “back of the pack” walker, I’ve been able to see that Disney staffs their race courses with water and Gatorade through the end of the race (for the most part–there have been a few exceptions over the years). There are always enough snack boxes at the end of the race for those of us that take hours longer than the fast runners at the front of the pack. That hasn’t been my experience with some of the other races I’ve walked in, so I’ve always been very grateful that runDisney seems to appreciate the back of the pack as much as the frontrunners.

Changes Announced for the  2025 WDW Marathon

This year, however, runDisney has announced there will be some CHANGES to the January 2025 WDW Marathon. The first change? Instead of the usual 5 a.m. start time, this year’s Marathon will begin at 4:30 a.m.  I’m guessing this is so they can try to have the courses cleared a little earlier and to shorten the length of time theme park guests are impacted by the race.

runDisney announced changes for 2025 WDW marathon. 2025 Marathon Weekend 10K.
runDisney 10K Chip & Dale

runDisney is telling us that the change is based on guest feedback and leads us to the other big change: the course itself. runDisney has recognized that guests LOVE the portion of each race that is actually inside the theme parks, so for the marathon, they’ve modified the course slightly to accommodate a little more time in EPCOT and the Magic Kingdom. They’re saying that starting the race 30 minutes earlier is allowing them to do this.

EPCOT 2025 WDW Marathon Course Changes

What exactly has changed? Normally, the race begins in the EPCOT parking lot and heads immediately out onto the roads towards Magic Kingdom. This year, the race will still begin in the EPCOT parking lot, but instead of heading out to the roads, racers will head into World Showcase, where the course will wind most of the way around World Showcase and then exit out near the front of EPCOT. Once racers leave EPCOT, they will then head to the roads towards Magic Kingdom. In this new course, most of mile three is actually inside EPCOT.

runDisney 2025 January Marathon MaprunDisney 2025 Marathon Map

Grand Floridian/Polynesian 2025 WDW Marathon Course Changes

The next big change happens when racers head towards the Magic Kingdom. Past courses have approached the Magic Kingdom by traveling under the Seven Seas Lagoon (briefly) and climbing the hill leading up to Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Bay Lake Tower before turning in to enter the Magic Kingdom.  The 2025 course, however, goes the other way–passing Disney’s Polynesian Resort, the Wedding Pavilion, and Disney’s Grand Floridian before heading to the Magic Kingdom.

Magic Kingdom 2025 WDW Marathon Course Changes

There’s another change in the course to enable racers to see more of the Magic Kingdom during the race. In previous years, racers journeyed up Main Street, before routing through Tomorrowland to New Fantasyland, through Cinderella Castle, and then through Liberty Square and Frontierland before exiting out behind Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

runDisney 2024 Princess Half Marathon Castle
runDisney Castle on course photo

The new map allows racers a little more time (and distance, of course) in the Magic Kingdom. The new course still goes up Main Street, but instead of heading towards Tomorrowland, racers will go through Adventureland. Next, racers will wind through Frontierland and then Liberty Square. Racers will pass It’s a Small World, Peter Pan’s Flight, Mickey’s Philharmagic and Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel before racing through Cinderella Castle.  The course continues through Fantasyland and Storybook Circus before winding into Tomorrowland and passing TRON and Space Mountain before exiting the Magic Kingdom near the Carousel of Progress.  All of mile nine and about half of mile ten are inside the Magic Kingdom.

runDisney 2025 Goofy Challenge

The rest of the course looks pretty similar to past years. I’m a little worried there may be some congestion in a couple areas where the course kind of crosses itself.  It looks, at least on the map, like the front runners and back of the packers may have a couple of intersections where they could all be in the same place at the same time. But I trust that runDisney will have it all figured out, and I’m sure once everyone is on the course, it will make more sense.

What are your thoughts?

So what do you think? Are you excited about the changes announced for the 2025 WDW Marathon? Do they matter to you? I’m hoping that similar changes will be announced for the 10K and the half in coming weeks. And then for Princess…. But who knows?!? We will see. I think overall, these are positive changes. I’m always happiest during the theme park sections of the races, so I think trying to include more distance inside the parks makes a lot of sense.  Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

It’s no surprise that the race weekend built for Disney princesses from all over the world will return once again to Walt Disney World now that runDisney races are BACK live in the parks.  A great entry point for beginner runDisney participants, Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend is scheduled for February 24 – 27, 2021.

New for 2022: the first morning will feature Disney Princess Sunrise Yoga in front of Cinderella Castle, before the theme park opens.  How fun does THAT sound?

The theme for the 2022 Princess Half Marathon Weekend will be courage and kindness.  Men are welcome to participate, but the Princess Half Marathon Weekend focuses more fully on women, girls and the female experience.  The Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend will feature a 5k, a 10k, and a half marathon.  The Weekend also features the Disney Fairy Tale Challenge (my favorite!) for those participants that want to do both the 10K and the half marathon.

Surprise!  runDisney has a NEW Race in the Family

All the big runDisney announcements from this morning included a new race in the lineup.  runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend is scheduled for March 31 – April 3, 2022.  Disney has stated that each race season, the fourth weekend will be the Springtime Surprise Weekend.  Each year, the race themes and distances will be different.

So essentially, this weekend is replacing the Star Wars race weekend?  Perhaps they are planning to rotate several different themes through this particular race weekend, depending on what film or theme park properties they want to promote in a particular year?  I guess we will find out.

runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend

They tell us that this weekend will be “as much about the smiles as it is about the miles” and beginner racers and veteran racers alike will be welcome.

We have no other information about this event at this time.  Hmmm.  Very mysterious.  Registration will like open in the fall, but we have no dates, distances, prices or themes yet.

Health and Safety

With runDisney races back in our lives, an obvious first question for many is, “What will the health and safety protocols be?”

The answer to this question is evolving.  Disney is saying that they will defer to the information they receive from scientists, vendors and sponsors, and will make decisions in the best interest of their guests, vendors, park guests, and cast members as each race weekend approaches.

Disney Face masks review Minnie Mouse face masks

It is possible that face coverings MAY be required or that other health and safety protocol measures may be in place at race time.

As more information becomes available for each race weekend, I will share it with you.

Virtual Races are Sticking Around

In the not-so-surprising news category, Disney has announced that Virtual Races are NOT going away.  Racers from all over the world will still be able to participate in runDisney races from wherever they are, even if they can’t come to the parks to join in the fun.

runDisney with your friends

The in-person runDisney races generate millions of dollars in revenue for Disney, and they have learned from the Covid runDisney experience that they can make even MORE money by opening the races up to a virtual audience.  I fully expect Disney to continue offering the virtual races, and to perhaps even expand their virtual offerings as time goes on.  They can operate the virtual races with much less overhead and get a lot of fan participation.  Races like these build additional fan loyalty, and of course, can lead to additional in park race participation, which adds to to resort revenues overall, in addition to runDisney dollars.

I think the virtual races are brilliant, and since runDisney is not foolish and they want ALL my money, they will continue for every runDisney in park race for the forseeable future.

If you’d like to learn more about Virtual Races (and why I love them), please read runDisney Virtual Races.

It’s True.  runDisney races are BACK at Walt Disney World.

I’m so excited I can’t hardly stand it.  runDisney races are truly exceptional experiences for runners and walkers alike.  The race course is filled with themed mile markers, race entertainment, characters and photo opps.  Logistically, no one does it better.  There are SO MANY portapotties!  (Ok, I don’t love the portapotty experience, but when ya gotta go, you are so grateful they are there).  I can’t even put into words racing through the theme parks themselves.  It’s AMAZING.  Fast runners will be in the parks at sunrise (or even before) and that’s a heart stopping, never forget it moment.  Slower runners or walkers (like me!) will enter the parks much later and find their paths lined with park goers cheering them on (also a heart stopping never forget it moment.

The adrenaline rush that comes from lining up at the starting line with thousands of other races is amazing for any big race…but for a runDisney race, it’s magnified somehow.  The energy just crackles through the air.  There are fireworks and Mickey Mouse for goodness sakes!  And whenever your energy is flagging, there will be something or someone on the course to boost your spirits and get you going again.

How about you?  Are you excited that runDisney races are back in the Walt Disney World parks?  What race or races are YOU registering for?

I may need to partner with a venture capitalist to support my runDisney addiction. {sigh}.

Hope to see you on the runDisney race course!

Disney World Reopening July 11, 2020

Great news today, everyone!  Walt Disney World has presented their plan for reopening the parks in Florida to the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force for approval.  Pending that approval as well as state approval, Disney World is reopening July 11, 2020.

Disney World is NOT opening all at once, however.  Like everything else, Disney World is going to reopen in phases.

Disney World’s Phased Reopening Approach

Initially, the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom will open on July 11, 2020.  A few days later, July 15, 2020, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios will open.

Disney World Reopening July 11, 2020
Disney’s Magic Kingdom (Photo: Brooke Hudson)

Disney is very focused on managing this reopening very carefully and more importantly, very responsibly.  They’re going to significantly limit attendance and guest density throughout the parks, once they reopen.

A Very Different Theme Park Experience

It’s important that we adjust our expectations to a new theme park experience.  Covid-19 unfortunately has not been eradicated, nor do we (yet) have a vaccine.  So it is very important that we continue to be careful and prioritize our health and safety.  Social distancing, washing your hands, and wearing face masks are going to continue to be very important–at least for the foreseeable future.

Disney World Reopening July 11
Cinderella Castle from Bay Lake Tower at Night (Photo: Brooke Hudson)

Some of Disney’s trademark experiences that draw large crowds are NOT returning to normal operations until further notice.  This means there will be no fireworks, parades, or nighttime spectaculars.  This also means that experiences that are considered “high touch” experiences are also not returning at this time.  This includes “makeover” experiences (think Bibbidi Bobbidi Doo), character meet and greets, water play areas and playgrounds.

To summarize, while the parks ARE reopening, the following experiences are NOT reopening during these early phases.

      • Parades
      • Character Meet and Greets
      • Fireworks and Nighttime Spectaculars
      • Makeover Experiences
      • Water Play Areas
      • Playgrounds
Animal Kingdom Mickey and Minnie vacation planning top reasons to visit Disney trip planning tips
Linda & Brooke with Mickey & Minnie at Animal Kingdom (Photo: Disney PhotoPass)

Disney has not specifically mentioned popular stage shows that also draw crowds, like the Indiana Jones Stunt Show or Beauty and the Beast.  I suspect those will either be limited or cancelled as well.  It’s possible Disney is holding off decisions on these types of attractions until they get closer to opening the parks.  I also think they may do limited seating to accommodate social distancing.  Similar to ideas that have been floated for reopening movie theaters, Disney could close alternate rows, and suggest distance between families or groups.  At this point we just don’t know.

Reservations for Park Entry

During this phased reopening of Disney World, Disney is going to require guest to make advance reservations to enter the park.  This is how they intend to limit attendance at each park.  They have not specifically stated how many guests will be allowed to enter each park once they are reopen; I suspect this is so they can test a variety of crowds as they see how things go.  Initially, Shanghai Disney reopened with a capacity of 24,000 versus their normal capacity of 80,000.

While we don’t have official numbers, the Magic Kingdom has a max capacity of 100,000 people.  (Personally, I find it pretty unpleasant any where NEAR that crowd level but different strokes for different folks!)  I’m expecting that Disney will limit attendance at MK to 30,000 OR LESS during this first phase of reopening.  Keep in mind, there are also THOUSANDS of cast members to support guests at the same time.

How to Make Reservations

Disney has not shared exactly HOW we are going to be able to make reservations for park entry.  They HAVE indicated that guests with existing tickets and annual passholders will be able to make reservations for park entrance before the system will be opened up for new ticket sales.

Disney World Reopening July 11

Disney has temporarily halted new ticket sales and new resort reservations until they work through the existing and rescheduled reservations.  Note: Disney Vacation Club members are the exception to this: they can still make resort reservations.  Disney has indicated that they will be reaching out to existing ticket holders and annual passholders “soon” to discuss the process for making park reservations with them.  The official statement says “more details about this new reservation system will be available soon”.

What Resorts are Reopening and When?

Disney has announced that Disney Vacation Club resorts in Orlando and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground are opening to guests June 22, 2020.  In addition, Disney Vacation Club resorts in Vero Beach, Florida and Hilton Head, South Carolina are opening to guests beginning June 15, 2020.  These resorts are reopening with new safety and cleanliness protocols in place.  In addition, plans to support social distancing and enhanced cleaning measures are in place, according to Disney.

Old Key West
Old Key West Resort (Photo: Brooke Hudson)

At this time, Disney has not announced when additional resorts will be opening.  My prediction is that they will roll out additional resorts as they gradually increase attendance thresholds at the parks. I’m sure there will be a lot of training for cast members at each resort as they prepare for reopening.

Will I Have to Wear a Mask?

Disney is putting various measures in place to protect health and safety of both guests and cast members as Disney World prepares to reopen July 11, 2020.

All guests over the age of three and all cast members will be required to wear face coverings inside the theme parks and in public areas of the resorts.  On the upside, Disney is selling really cute face masks (of course!) at shopDisney.com now for pre-order.  Check them out below. I mean, if you have to wear one, they might as well be adorable, right?

Disney has really cute face masks for sale

In addition, both guests and cast members will be required to undergo temperature checks prior to entering a theme park.  Disney already has the temperature check system in place for guests entering Disney Springs.

Disney is also recommending cashless transactions whenever possible, encouraging guests to plan on using their magic bands or credit cards to minimize the handling or exchange of (potentially bacteria carrying) cash.

High traffic areas will get additional cleaning and disinfection procedures with higher frequency than other areas.  Disney has also stated that procedures will be reviewed and updated frequently as we all get used to the new normal.

What Does it All Mean?

So, the good news: Disney World is reopening July 11, 2020.  The not-as-good news is that things are going to be different.  But let’s face it.  There are a LOT of things in our lives that are going to be different going forward.  Perhaps permanently different.

Disney has stated that the phased opening at Shanghai Disneyland has been going very well, and that they are encouraged by the guest response there.  Let’s hope guests in Orlando will be as cooperative and understanding.

Disney and the coronavirus update

Disney continues to work with the CDC and other health officials to implement best practices for reopening.  I suspect this will be an evolving situation as time goes on, and we all have a chance to see the impact that reopening has on our citizenry.  Hopefully, we are going to continue the number of new cases shrink as life gradually returns to normal. However, it is important to recognize that public safety is critical, and should we see a surge in new cases, it is entirely possible that Disney will have to close again.

We’re All in This Together

It is vital that any guests intending to visit the parks in the next couple of months (and perhaps longer still) are prepared to wear masks, practice social distancing, wash their hands frequently and get their temperatures checked.

It is also important that guests weigh their desire to visit the parks against the potential risks to their own health, and the health of others.  Finally, it is critical to understand that some experiences will NOT be happening for the first few weeks and months the parks are open.  If those changes are going to make you unhappy, or cause you to question the expense, I recommend you reschedule your trip for later in the year or even to next year.

We must all work together to help this phased reopening of Disney and the rest of our country be successful.  We must be respectful of the new safety protocols in place for the protection of EVERYONE.  Wearing a mask in the Florida heat this summer may not be fun, but it may also help to save lives.  I, for one, think that’s a small price to prevent other people getting sick, or even worse.

What We Don’t Know

There’s still a lot we DON’T know, and I expect information will become available in the weeks to come.  I know I still have questions about dining and transportation.  Are you wondering about Fast Passes and the virtual queue for Rise of the Resistance?  I’d like to know about shows and the stretching room at the Haunted Mansion.  I bet you are wondering about the new Space 220 restaurant at EPCOT and all the other construction projects in progress.

Lots of questions, and very few answers.  I’m excited Disney is opening, and I’m anxious to see what’s to come!

Happy Dreaming,

Brooke

Disney World and Disneyland Closing Due to Coronavirus

Breaking news!  The Walt Disney Company announced today that Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris and Disneyland will be closing due to the coronavirus.  In addition, Disney Cruise Line departures are cancelled through the end of March.

These new Disney theme park closures follow the closures of Shanghai Disney, Tokyo Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland earlier this month.

Earlier this week, we gave you an update regarding Disney’s policies and procedures for both U.S. Disney Parks and Resorts and Disney Cruise Line.  If you’d like to review that article, please visit here.

However, in just a few days, the coronavirus has caused increasing concerns worldwide, affecting the decisions of people all over the globe.  As a result, Disney has announced that Disney Parks in the U.S. and France will close beginning March 16, 2020.  The parks will remain closed through the end of the month.

Disney’s Official Statements

Disney released these statements late Thursday afternoon.

Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris and Disney Cruise Line

“In an abundance of caution and in the best interest of our Guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of our theme parks at Walt Disney World® Resort in Florida and Disneyland Paris Resort, beginning at the close of business on Sunday, March 15, through the end of the month.

Disney Cruise Line will suspend all new departures beginning Saturday, March 14, through the end of the month.

The Walt Disney Company will pay its Cast Members during that closure period.

The hotels at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris will remain open until further notice.  The retail and dining complexes, Disney Springs at Walt Disney World and Disney Village at Disneyland Paris, will remain open.

Domestic Walt Disney Company employees who are able to work from home are being asked to do so, including those at The Walt Disney Studios, Walt Disney Television, ESPN, Direct-to-Consumer, and Parks, Experiences and Products.

We will continue to stay in close contact with appropriate officials and health experts.”

Disneyland and California Adventure

“While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland® Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month.

The Hotels of the Disneyland Resort will remain open until Monday, March 16 to give guests the ability to make necessary travel arrangements; Downtown Disney will remain open. We will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies. Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time.

Disneyland Resort will work with guests who wish to change or cancel their visits, and will provide refunds to those who have hotel bookings during this closure period.  We anticipate heavy call volume over the next several days and appreciate guests’ patience as we work hard to respond to all inquiries.

Please contact The Walt Disney Travel Company for questions and cancellations at 714.52.5050.”

Questions You May Have

To learn more about the coronavirus (COVID-19) and the U.S. response to it by visiting the CDC.

What if I have a vacation package booked while the parks are closed?

You can cancel or modify your room reservation or Walt Disney Travel Company package up until your original scheduled check in date.  There will be no fee to change your dates or cancel your package.  If you take no action to change or cancel, Disney will automatically process a refund to your original form of payment within seven days of your original check in date.

What if I have a vacation package booked after March 31?  (But I don’t want to travel during that time?)

Disney has temporarily changed their change and cancellation policy.  If you have a room reservation or vacation package with a check in date through June 30, 2020, you can change your dates or cancel your reservation with no penalty or cancellation fee.

How does the closure impact my annual pass?

Annual passes will be extended by the number of days the parks are closed.  (Note: Disney has officially answered this question for WDW Annual Passes, but I am fairly confident that the same will hold true for Disneyland Annual Passes.)

What if I have date specific theme park tickets for the period the parks will be closed?

Unexpired multi-day theme park tickets with unused days or date specific theme park tickets with a start date on or before March 31, 2020 will be automatically extended to use any date before December 15, 2020.  If you can’t visit the parks prior to December 15, 2020, you may apply the value of your wholly unused ticket toward the purchase of a ticket for a future date.

What if I have a ticket for Disney After Hours, Disney Villains After Hours or Disney Early Morning Magic between March 16, 2020 and March 31, 2020?

Your ticket will be automatically refunded because those events are being cancelled.

What if I’ve prepaid for a dining reservation or an experience reservation like Build a Droid ?  (Scheduled between March 16, 2020 and March 31, 2020?)

All prepaid dining and experience reservations will be automatically refunded if they were scheduled to occur between March 16, 2020 and March 31, 2020.

What about dining reservations that I guaranteed with a credit card?

You will not pay a cancellation or no-show fee for reservations at locations impacted by the closures.

Disney World and Disneyland Closing Due to Coronavirus — Final Thoughts

I am disappointed that Disney made these decisions to close their parks worldwide.  However, I understand that governmental and public pressures made this result almost inevitable.

I am very happy to see that Disney will continue to pay all cast members impacted by the closures.  When I first heard this news, I was very concerned for the cast members.  It’s fairly well known that Disney cast members’ wages are pretty low. I suspect many cast members live paycheck to paycheck as do so many people these days.  The impact of two weeks without pay could be ruinous to many people.  I am glad to see that Disney is stepping up and taking care of their people.

It is of course possible that Disney could elect to extend these closures beyond the end of March; however, I am hopeful that will not be necessary.  I hope that in April, we will see a return to normalcy across the country and the world; not just for Disney but for all of us.

What are your thoughts about Disney World and Disneyland closing due to the coronavirus?  Do you have any vacation plans impacted by these closures?  Please comment with your thoughts below.

Please take care of yourselves and those you love!

Disney and the Coronavirus

I know that many people are very concerned about COVID-19, commonly referred to as the novel coronavirus.  If you are planning a Disney vacation and/or a Disney Cruise Line vacation in the coming months, no doubt Disney and their response to the coronavirus are weighing on your mind.

Disney has released formal statements regarding COVID-19 for both Disney Parks and Resorts and the Disney Cruise Line.

It is important to remember that while the novel coronavirus can be very serious for those with health issues that compromise their immune system and make them more vulnerable, for most of us the impact of contracting the novel coronavirus will be similar to the flu.  Taking care of our personal hygiene per the guidelines released by the CDC (link in the statement below) will significantly reduce our vulnerability to COVID-19, as well as other contagious diseases.

Disney has a well earned reputation for cleanliness and sanitation, and I am confident they are taking every necessary precaution to ensure the safety of all guests.

Disney and the Coronavirus – Parks and Resorts

Dr. Pamela Hymel, Disney’s Chief Medical Officer released a statement a few days ago.  We have included an excerpt from this statement below:

“As part of our commitment to the health and well-being of our cast, guests and the larger community, we are carefully monitoring the evolving coronavirus situation and are in regular contact with health agencies for information and guidance. Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, are welcoming guests as usual and we continue to implement preventive measures in line with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other health agencies.

Walt Disney World, Disneyland and all of our parks and resorts around the world have high standards of cleanliness, which assists with illness prevention, and we have health and safety protocols in place, such as:

      • Training for cast members, with ongoing reinforcement on a regular basis
      • Defined cycles for frequent cleaning and disinfection of targeted areas
      • Easy access to handwashing facilities and hand sanitizers
      • Quick response to spills, trash and other situations
      • End of day sanitation procedures for restroom, kitchen, and other facilities
      • Frequent cleaning and “wash down” of outdoor locations, including walkways and queues

Additionally, our onsite health teams and leaders are communicating with our cast members about illness prevention, including the guidance of the CDC. The CDC recommends everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs, such as staying home when sick, washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, following proper respiratory cough etiquette, avoiding close contact with people who are sick and avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.”

Disney Cruise Line and the Coronavirus

In response to concerns specifically related to cruise travel, Disney has released the following statement and update to Disney Cruise Line policies.

“Information on Coronavirus Disease 2019 continues to evolve quickly and Disney Cruise Line is closely following guidance from health officials and authorities in the ports of call we visit. We are also committed to keeping our Guests informed and updated, and are happy to address any questions our Guests have in advance of their cruise vacations and once they’re onboard.

The health and safety of our Guests, as well as that of our Crew Members, is our primary focus. We are taking precautionary steps and have implemented the following guidelines, which will likely continue to evolve as more information becomes available:

      • Currently, any Guest or Crew Member who has traveled from, to or through China, including Hong Kong and Macau, South Korea, Italy, Iran or Japan, within 14 days of departure will not be able to board our ships.
      • Any Guest or Crew Member who has been in contact with someone from these areas, including Guests with connecting flights in these locations, also will not be able to board, nor will anyone who has helped care for someone suspected of having or diagnosed with the coronavirus (COVID-19), or who is currently subject to health monitoring for possible exposure. Guests who have air travel booked through Disney Cruise Line will automatically have their flights rebooked on an alternate route. Guests who booked their own air travel arrangements should contact their airlines directly to make the appropriate changes.
      • As is always our practice, we screen all Guests and Crew Members before they board, and anyone who feels unwell with gastrointestinal or flu-like symptoms (fever over 100.4º F, chills, cough or difficulty breathing) will not be permitted to sail.
      • In addition, all Guests and Crew Members will have their temperature checked by a nurse with a no touch thermometer prior to boarding, regardless if they are symptomatic or feel unwell. Additional medical screening will be required for anyone with a temperature of 100.4º F or greater, and they along with their travel party may be unable to sail.
      • For cruises that include a stop in Nassau or Castaway Cay, please note that The Bahamas will not allow anyone to disembark in any Bahamian port if they have been to China, South Korea, Italy or Iran in the past 20 days prior to arrival. These Guests may be able to sail but will be unable to visit The Bahamas.
      • For cruises that include a stop in Jamaica, please note that in addition to the locations noted above, officials there also will not allow Guests who have traveled from, to or through Singapore within 14 days of arrival to come ashore. These Guests will be unable to sail.

Temporary Cancellation Policy Update

Given the current situation, we are offering temporary adjustments to our cancellation policy to provide more flexibility for our guests. These adjustments may continue to evolve as more information becomes available.”

“Disney Cruise Line Coronavirus (COVID-19) Additional Information

Disney Cruise Line consistently receives among the highest public health inspection scores and has health and safety protocols in place. We also have a comprehensive plan that outlines protocols for managing illness and closely follow the guidance of public health officials. Some of these procedures include:

      • Training for all of our Crew Members on how best to prevent the spread of illness onboard.
      • A health screening completed by all Guests and Crew Members to check for illness before they board the ship.
      • Extensive cleaning and sanitation of high-traffic areas (e.g., handrails, doorknobs and elevator buttons) and children’s facilities.
      • Cleaning of all staterooms twice a day, and additional disinfection when necessary.
      • Medical clinics on our ships staffed with experienced doctors and nurses and stocked with supplies and medications to treat a variety of illnesses.

According to public health authorities, Guests can also help prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and many other illnesses by frequently washing their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom and before eating. Parents can supervise their children to ensure they wash their hands thoroughly. In addition, Disney Cruise Line has hand sanitizer wipes and sanitation stations conveniently available in multiple places on its ships. Guests can also cover their nose and mouth with a tissue (or upper sleeve) when sneezing, and avoid sneezing or coughing into their hands or without covering their nose and mouth.”

Keep Calm and Wash Your Hands

Because concern about the coronavirus is widespread, I felt it was important to include Disney’s statements verbatim, rather than to paraphrase them.  As Disney releases new statements or amends these statements, I will release updates.

Disney and the coronavirus update

Bottom line: Disney is doing everything they can to combat the spread of COVID-19 or any other disease in their theme parks and cruise line.  They have an excellent reputation for cleanliness and training cast members on strict policies and procedures. I have no doubt that Disney has gotten even more aggressive in these areas due to the concerns regarding the coronavirus.

If you have a Disney Parks or a Disney Cruise Line vacation planned for the next 60 days, and are concerned about Disney and the coronavirus, Disney has implemented temporary cancellation policies.  If you would like my help with determining your recourse and/or rescheduling your trip, please contact me at brooke@disneycastledreaming.com.

As long as you feel comfortable with Disney’s policies and are in reasonably good health, I don’t think it is necessary to cancel or reschedule your trip.  However, if you are worried and don’t think you’d be comfortable, I can certainly understand if you wish to cancel or reschedule.

I will keep you updated as news regarding Disney and the coronavirus evolves.

TRAINING for your Disney Vacation

She said WHAT??  TRAINING FOR MY VACATION?  Is she INSANE?  Well, yes, but that’s beside the point 😉  Seriously, I said training for your vacation and I meant it!

My goal in writing for this site is primarily to help you have a better Disney vacation.  I want you to do a little up-front planning to make your trip go smoother.  I want to tell you about new attractions or restaurants to help make sure you don’t miss out on something you’ll really enjoy.  I want to offer tips and tricks to help you maximize your time and fun at the parks.  I want to help you prepare for the best possible, most enjoyable vacation for you and your family.

How much good would all that do if, at the end of the first day, you are EXHAUSTED and your feet and legs hurt so much that you can’t even sleep that night?  Or worse, if you end up with terrible blisters on your feet that significantly curtail your vacation activities as your trip wears on?  Your vacation will definitely be much LESS enjoyable if you end up spending 2/3 of it in pain, trust me.  I’ve been there.  Which is precisely why I want to make sure you DON’T make the same mistakes.

Listen, these days, most people lead relatively sedentary lives.  We drive to work, we spend the day sitting at our desks, we drive home and we sit down to eat dinner and then sit down at the computer or on the couch to watch TV.  Obviously, there are many exceptions to this…If you work out most days and you routinely get 12,000 steps or more on your FitBit or pedometer, this article isn’t for you.  You are in terrific shape for your vacation, go off and do something active 😉.

But if you’re part of the majority of us who DON’T routinely get more than 12,000 steps per day, you may want to consider training for your vacation.

A Disney vacation is wonderful and fun, and a great chance to let go of your worries and play together and drink in the magic and adventure.  What it is not, as a rule, is relaxing.  A Disney vacation is an active vacation.  Now, I need to point out that it is possible to have a relaxing vacation at Disney…every resort has a pool, and there are golf courses and lots of other relaxing leisure activities you can take advantage of.  Or if you are able to spend 2-3 weeks at Disney, it’s much easier to have a relaxing vacation, because you can spread out your park days and have more down time, and you can be much more leisurely about visiting attractions.  Or if you have the means and time to visit multiple times per year.  Or the means to hire a VIP tour guide that can help you get around behind the scenes and avoid many of the worst lines.  There are definitely ways to have a relaxing vacation at Disney, if you have time and means.  I don’t happen to have any of these ways or means, though…😉

I’m talking more about the average Disney vacation that most families or individuals take—3-7 days, time off work, trying to maximize your time in the parks and seeing and doing as much as humanly possible, maximizing your “return on investment”.  Let’s face it, for most of us, a Disney vacation is a BIG expenditure, and you want to feel like you’ve squeezed every drop of fun out of that darn trip so you feel that spending was worth it.   (There are lots of ways to do Disney more economically, and there are tons of budget travel tips out there—I’ll do an article on that in the future…but again, I’m talking mainly about the “average” trip right now).

First thing to think about:  Disney resorts are LARGE.  Some are VERY LARGE.  In other words, just to get from your room to breakfast or the bus stop, you may walk a half mile (or more).  Add to that: each Disney park is LARGE.  Some are VERY LARGE.  (Are you sensing a trend here?).  It is not unusual to walk five miles or more in a single day, visiting only one park and not really pushing yourself.  If you park hop, or really push to see EVERYTHING in a particular park, criss-crossing and revisiting favorites??  You could do more like 7-10 miles.  In a single day.  On a particularly adventurous day a few years ago, a friend and I set a goal to visit all four parks in a single day, and then ended up back at MK for fireworks at the end of the night…technically visiting four parks with five visits.  We each logged more than 14 miles that day.  That’s a half marathon, baby!

Map-WDW-Resort

My point is, if you are NOT accustomed to spending long periods of time standing and walking 5-7 miles per day, multiple days per week, your Disney vacation is going to be physically more demanding than what you are used to.  If you don’t prepare, you will be in serious pain after a day or two.  Ideally, you have 2-3 months before your trip, and can ramp up slowly and without too much effort.  Basically, your goal is to get to walking 5 miles per day, 4-6 days a week by about a week before your vacation.  Note, I’ve tried getting ready using biking instead of walking, and that didn’t help as much.  You really need weight bearing, low impact exercise.  Part of it is time based too.  Unless you walk really fast, 5 miles is going to take you around an hour and a half.  That doesn’t compare in any way shape or form to 10 -12 hours on your feet, but it helps to get some decent time in as well as mileage on your feet.  I’m a pretty heavy person, so my issues may be more challenging than yours if you are in better shape than I am, but even if you’re tiny, you’re still going to be putting a lot more pressure than you are used to on your legs and feet, walking and standing on hard surfaces all day long.

If you wear a FitBit or pedometer, take a look at your current average steps per day.  If you are habitually below 12,000, start by trying to add 500 or 1000 steps per day for a week or so, and then try and add another 1,000 steps per day the next week.  For example, I’ve been hanging around the 8,000 steps per day neighborhood for a few weeks now, so this week, I’m trying average 9,000 steps per day.  Next week, I’ll work on 10,000 and 11,000 the following week.  Make sense?  For me personally, It takes about 2,300 steps for me to reach one mile.  So my goal is to be closer to 15-16,000 steps by the time we leave for vacation.  Everyone is a little different, and based on your height or stride length, you may need more or less steps than me to hit a mile.  I found this helpful article that talks about this:  How Many Steps in a Mile?

If you don’t have a pedometer, that’s ok.  Just take a look at what you are currently doing and, if you’re not spending a lot of time on your feet and/or walking, add more!  If you are completely sedentary, try walking for 20 – 30 minutes a day for a week or so. Then add another 10-20 minutes after that.  Or take a separate 10-20-minute walk, later in the day.  Whatever works for you, however you can fit it in.

Use what you have:  if you can, take a walk outside on the sidewalk or street.  Don’t worry too much about speed, unless you are also working on weight loss or training for a race.  Just walk and try and enjoy yourself.  Some days, I’m able to take a short walk on my lunch break at work.  I always find my energy and mood lifted in the afternoon on those days.  If you can’t walk outside, walk inside.  Do you have a treadmill or elliptical?  Great, use those.  Just try and mix some outside, on the pavement time too.  Your legs and feet need to build up a little endurance on those surfaces.  If you are dealing with snow and ice or torrential rains and can’t walk outside and don’t have access to a treadmill or elliptical, DON’T GIVE UP!  You can walk around your house.  Turn on some music and dance around your house.  March in place, jog in place, go up and down stairs.  Just stay on your feet, and try and get those miles in.  I also sometimes will use YouTube walking videos to help me get some variety in my walking inside routine:  I really like Jessica Smith.  Check her YouTube page out here:   Jessica Smith TV  She has a TON of free walking workout videos, as well as lots of other types of workouts, including stretching, yoga, kickboxing…all kinds of good stuff there.

Trust me on this: I know we are all busy, and finding time to exercise is something that everyone struggles with…but you are spending a lot of money on this vacation and you do not want to spend it miserable.  And if your feet, legs, hips and back are killing you by the end of day 1, you will be miserable!  I’ve been there, and it really impacted my enjoyment of the trip.  Sometimes, it’s easier to motivate yourself to be more active when it’s in pursuit of VACATION rather than for the sake of being more active for it’s own sake.  *Yes, I know, we should ALL be working on being more active because it’s good for our bodies and our brains.  That is a fact.  I KNOW.  BUT…I’m still a work in progress.  If thinking about vacation gets me moving when nothing else will?  I’ll think about vacation!

Think about the rest of your travel group, too.  You may not be able to get your kids to walk five miles 4 days a week with you, but can you get them to do more walking than they do normally?  If you will be pushing a stroller with a 30-pound kid in it all over Disney, guess what?  You should probably be pushing that stroller on at least some of your long walks before your trip.  Try and get your spouse to do more walking too.  It’s great if you can do this together, and spend time talking and getting excited about your trip.  For my husband and I, our work schedules make it pretty tough to walk together most days BUT I’ve already started pushing him to walk every day in preparation for our November trip.  He doesn’t want sore feet and legs any more than I do, so fortunately, he’s listening to me.  We make a game out of it, teasing each other over who got more miles in each day or week.

Another thing to train: Your vacation footwear.  Do NOT buy brand new shoes for vacation and not wear them for several days and miles before you go!  I have done this in the past and my feet were NOT happy!  Just like wearing heels at your wedding, you need to break in your shoes before you go on vacation.  If you follow through and are walking a lot in the weeks leading up to your trip, try to have your ”vacation” shoes at least two weeks before your trip, and start wearing them on your walks.

There are a lot of different opinions out there on the “best” shoes for Disney vacation.  I’ve seen everything from flip flops to high heels (really?  Are you crazy, lady?  All I can think is OUCH.)  I tend to wear comfortable athletic shoes—not too old, I want lots of good cushion and shock absorption left in them.  But wear what is comfortable for you, keeping in mind that you will be walking on hard surfaces for many hours and miles per day.

How are you planning to “train” for your Disney vacation?  I’d love to hear from you!

Happy Dreaming!
