Disney Halloween Merchandise 2020

Disneyland and Walt Disney World may have cancelled this year’s ticketed Halloween parties, but there is a LOT of fun Disney Halloween merchandise available for 2020!! Earlier this year, Disney made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s scheduled Mickey’s Very Scary Halloween Parties. A fairly large fall revenue source for Disney, these popular Halloween themed special events require a separate ticket for admission, and featured activities, entertainment and merchandise exclusive to the parties. (For more on this annual event, please see our posts here or here.)

Disney’s decision made sense to us.  With social distancing requirements already impacting so much Disney entertainment, fireworks and parades, there was just no way to provide guests with the value they expect for the price of the party ticket.  The decision was disappointing, but certainly the correct decision on Disney’s part.  Guests that had already purchased tickets are being refunded.

Disney may be losing out on party ticket revenue but they are NOT going to let that merchandise revenue slip through their hands.  Halloween is an extremely popular holiday in the United States, and  Disney Halloween themed merchandise is second only to Disney Christmas/Holiday themed merchandise.

ShopDisney.com Halloween Shop

If you are unable to visit either of the Disney parks this year, don’t worry.  ShopDisney.com has got you covered.  This year’s shopDisney Halloween shop is filled with fun Disney Halloween merchandise.  If you are a Disney Halloween merchandise fan, read on with caution.  I take no responsibility for your credit card melting. 😉

*The fine print: There are some links provided on our site and in this article. If you follow one of these links and ultimately make a purchase, we receive a small commission. This does not affect the price you pay in anyway. We provide information about Disney related products that we believe you will enjoy. Thank you.

Halloween Costumes

One of my favorite departments in the Halloween Shop at shopDisney.com this year is the Halloween costumes section.

I mean look at some of these…couldn’t you just die from the cute?

Baby Costumes

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

When I was little, my mom made our costumes, and they were the BEST.  But these days, most parents don’t have time to go the homemade route.  If you can’t go do homemade, I think these Disney costumes look like a great alternative.  (And if you ARE going the homemade route, I think you can find some terrific inspiration looking at all the Disney costumes!)

 Kids Costumes

The kids costumes have the widest variety of options. If your kid loves Disney or Marvel or Star Wars, you are likely to find something they will love.  Looks at some of these adorable options.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The pricing on the kids costumes covers a wide range. The lowest price I found was $29.99, and the highest was a whopping $500!!!

Disney has even included a couple of costumes for kids that have a wheelchair that also needs a costume.  Check these out!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Finally, we have the “not a costume” costume.  I love this idea for the kids in colder climates who always have to put a coat on over their cute costumes.  These are hoodies, themed to various characters.  Your kid can warm and cozy AND be channeling their inner Monster (or Princess).  There are a bunch of these, here are just a couple.

Adult Costumes

Of course, the adults can’t be left out of the mix, right? A word for my fellow plus size Disney fans—these costumes are not for us.  Most adult costumes come in S,M and L.  A few offer size XXL, but not many.  And based on my experience with Disney sizing, I predict these probably run small.  No plus size options at all.

There aren’t a lot of options in the Adult Costume category.  And like most Halloween stores, you’ll notice most of the women’s costumes walk the “sexy” line and most of the men’s are “heroes” costumes.

Here are some of the costumes I found:

The Sanderson Sisters would be fun if you were going to a party in a group, and all loved Hocus Pocus!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

 Pet Costumes

I didn’t even think this was a real thing.  Over the years, I have seen some animals in costumes, but those were generally pretty simple and handmade. I had no idea that Disney pet costumes were a real thing.  But they are!!

These pet costumes are pretty intricate and detailed.  Would your pet actually be willing to wear one of these?

My favorite is the Ewok.  So darn cute.  But what dog would actually wear it and not chew on it?  If you dress your pet up for Halloween and they enjoy it, please send me a picture for the blog!  I’d love to post your pictures and show off your pet costumes.  They do not need to be Disney themed!

Home Decor

Well, it’s pretty hard to beat the costumes, but Disney does try in the home decor section.

If you are a fan of the Haunted Mansion, the Nightmare Before Christmas or Hocus Pocus, Disney has a home decor item for you to help get you home in the Halloween spirit.

Check out this cute collectible featuring the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus.  (Did you hear Hocus Pocus is getting a reboot?  More on that in a future post!)

The Nightmare Before Christmas stuff is really cute.  It also includes some party decorations (balloons, photo booth props, etc.) if you are planning a Nightmare Before Christmas Halloween party!

There is so much stuff!  I love the Minnie themed Halloween kitchen towels. There are several Mickey head pumpkin designs as well.  Take a look at just a few of the items below.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Haunted Mansion

And of course, there’s the Haunted Mansion merchandise. Disney’s line of Haunted Mansion themed merchandise is actually available all year round, but it seems particularly popular and appropriate around Halloween, doesn’t it?  There are TONS of items in the Haunted Mansion “shop”, but here are a few that could add to your spooky theme for Halloween.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Wearables

If you want to add a little Halloween into your every day wardrobe, this department is for you.  Lots of Disney Halloween themed backpacks, T-shirts, sweatshirts, face masks and socks.  There are pins and “ear hats” and even light up pumpkin Mickey head necklaces.  Here’s just a sample of all the goodies up for grabs at shopDisney.com.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Will Your Halloween Be Disney-Themed?

I don’t usually dress up for Halloween.  However, I have been known to throw on a pair of Mickey or Minnie ears for the occasion.  This year, I’m really thinking the Minnie Witch Hat ears and the light up Mickey head pumpkin necklace might just be my go-to.

What about all of you?  Do you decorate for Halloween?  Do you take your kids trick or treating?  Do you wear a costume or go to any Halloween parties?

Please like this post and share below.  I would love to know how you all celebrate Halloween, and whether any of you include Disney in your celebrations!

Brooke

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge NOW OPEN at Disneyland

Can you believe it?  After all our anticipation, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is NOW OPEN at the Disneyland Resort.  I’ve got lots of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge news and updates for you, including information about the live streaming of the opening dedication, what you will need to know before you go, and updates on food, beverage and MERCHANDISE.  Read on, because we have lots to chat about today.

Go Inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Check out this terrific video Disney released, taking us inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland.

How amazing does that look?  I can’t WAIT to go and see for myself!

Are you planning a visit to Disneyland to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge?  There are some things you should know BEFORE you go!

Good Morning America’s Visit

Good Morning America’s Ginger Zee got to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland a few days ago.  Lucky for us, she’s sharing a sneak peek of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with GMA viewers (and all of us!)

Here’s a quick look at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with Ginger Zee that GMA posted earlier this week:

ABC News Sneak Peek

On Wednesday, Good Morning America posted a more in depth look at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, including Ginger Zee’s ride on Millenium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run!  Click the link below to check out the video and article.

Opening Dedication LIVESTREAM

In related news, Inside Disney Parks live streamed the Opening Dedication for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort.  The live stream aired Tuesday night.  I tried to watch, but the feed keep kicking me out for some reason.

The good news is that Disney has released a link to a replay of the 40 minute livestream.  You can watch it below:

Know Before You Go: Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Here’s the latest “Know Before You Go” video from Disney Parks:

Here are important things to know, whether you are visiting right away, or later in the year:

      • Reminder: Reservations are required from May 31 – June 23, 2019.  Guests without reservations will NOT be able to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge from May 31 – June 23, 2019.  The only way to get a reservation at this point is to book a resort reservation at one of the three Disneyland resorts (Disney’s Paradise Pier Resort, Disneyland Resort, or Disney’s Grand Californian Spa and Resort) during the reservation period.  Resort guests are automatically granted a reservation during their stay to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
      • Disneyland theme park admission IS required.  If you have a reservation for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge but do NOT have a ticket to get into Disneyland, you will NOT be visiting Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
      • If you have a reservation to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, you may check in for your reservation up to two hours early; however, you don’t NEED to check in early.  If you have a reservation, you WILL get in.
      • If you do not have a reservation, you will NOT get in to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  There will NOT be a queue for guests without reservations to gain access.

Stormtroopers Will Escort You OUT…

We are in the home stretch now.  Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at Disneyland on May 31, 2019, and I can’t wait to hear all the first hand accounts of visitors from those first few days!

As we’ve discussed on this blog before, Disneyland is requiring reservations for Disneyland guests that wish to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during this first few weeks.  Guests visiting between May 31 and June 23, 2019 had to request free reservations to be awarded a four hour window within which they will be able to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  It appears that each guest with a reservation will be given a color coded wrist band to help cast members verify that the guest IS visiting Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at the appropriate time.

Here’s the fun part: If a guest “overstays their welcome” at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, they will be asked to leave BY STORMTROOPERS!  In fact, it appears that Disney is planning for Stormtroopers to escort guests that have stayed too long out of the new land entirely!!

Food and Beverages

Here’s a “Know Before You Go” video that Disney released about the food and beverage options we have to look forward to inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Here are some pictures Disney has released of the food and beverage offerings:

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Where’s the Merchandise?

There is going to be TONS of fun stuff for us all to drool over and add to our Star Wars merchandise collections.

Disney released another “Know Before You Go” video featuring the merchandise we have to look forward to.

It looks like SOME items will also be added to the Star Wars Launch Bay gift shop in Hollywood Studios and at Disneyland.  This means even if you can’t get in to the new land right away, you may still be able to get your hands on some of that limited time only merchandise.

We previously did a blog about some of the merchandise coming to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  If you missed it, click here.

Here’s some new pictures Disney released.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is now open, but there is only one of its two flagship attractions open at this time.  Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is open, and looks really terrific.

For all of us that have WISHED we could fly the Millennium Falcon someday, it looks like we’re going to get our chance!

Disney released this video to show us what we can expect.  We get to go through the queue and see some of the hidden treasures we can look for.  We even get to go for a quick ride (Don’t watch this if you’re avoiding spoilers!)

Reservations for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge SOLD OUT

Disney has just announced (12pm Pacific time) that there are no more reservations available to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland between May 31 (opening day) and June 23, 2019.   Reservations for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge have sold out!  Granted, these were no-cost reservations, so technically “sold out” isn’t the right term, but I’m not sure what else to call it.

There are still Disneyland Resort hotel reservations available during that time, May 31 – June 23 2019; every Disneyland Resort hotel guest staying during that time automatically receives a designated reservation to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during their visit.  Please see today’s earlier post, How to Make Reservations for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for more details.

If anyone had ANY doubts about the popularity of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and it’s potential impact on future crowds, I think these reservations going so fast is pretty indicative of the interest people have to get inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  I think the post June 23 crowds are going to be MASSIVE.

What do you guys think?  Is this crazy or what?  Or did you expect them to go this fast?  We don’t know how many reservations were available, but presumably there were thousands available this morning.

Please comment below with your thoughts!

How to Make Reservations for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

***Update: 12pm Pacific time— At this time there are no reservations available to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for May 31 – June 23 through the Disneyland.com.  Essentially, all the non-Disneyland Resort Hotel Reservations are SOLD OUT.

So this means that you will either need to wait until AFTER June 23 to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and hope, based on capacity limitations, you will be able to get in OR you will need a Disneyland Resort Hotel reservation to stay at least one night during the May 31- June 23 reservations required period.  There are still rooms (and therefore reservations) available.  Contact me at Brooke@disneycastledreaming.com if you’d like to book.***

***************************************************

If you are planning to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland between May 31 (Opening Day!) and June 23 2019, a reservation is required.  Reservations will be limited, and are not guaranteed.  Earlier this morning, Disney released more information as to how to make your reservations to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  I am sharing these details with you below.

Reservations open today, May 2, 2019 at 10 am Pacific time.   There is no additional cost to make a reservation, but reservations are subject to availability.  For more information, please review yesterday’s post, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Reservation Information.

How to Make Your Reservation

Starting today, May 2, at 10 am Pacific time, visit Disneyland.com and log in to your Disney Account.

Before you log in, you should have the names of everyone (up to six guests total per reservation) that will be part of your Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservation.

Have a few alternative dates and times in mind, in case your first choice isn’t available.

You won’t need to have valid theme park admission to make your reservation; however you will have to have valid theme park admission to enter Disneyland and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

To enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with your reservation, you will need valid theme park admission, your reservation information and a valid government issued ID.  The guest that made the original reservation, as well as any guests on the reservation 18 or over 18 will be required to show a valid government ID.  Children under the age of 3 will not need a Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservation.

Only guests that are listed on the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservation will be admitted, and they must have proper ID.

Once your reservation has been made, no changes or modifications will be allowed.  If you transfer or sell your reservation to someone else, your reservation is void.  Unused reservations will be cancelled and not replaced.

How to Make Reservations for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open May 31, 2019, at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, and Aug. 29, 2019, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. (Disney Parks)

Disneyland Resort Hotel Guests

Guests who are staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels (Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, Disneyland Hotel, or Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel) between May 31 and June 23 do not need to make a reservation for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland.com.  All resort guests will receive a designated reservation to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during their stay.

Each registered guest will receive a designated reservation to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  Valid theme park admission and valid government issued ID will be required to use your reservation to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at your appointed date and time.

*Note: If you cancel your Disneyland Resort reservation, your Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservation will also be cancelled.

The Fine Print

Reservations will be limited, and subject to capacity.  Experiences within Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be subject to capacity and are not guaranteed.

Are you ready?  It’s officially less than a month until Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at Disneyland on May 31!  Guests planning to visit Disneyland between May 31 and June 23, 2019, hoping to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will need a reservation.  Read on to get Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservation information.

Disneyland Resort Guests

The easiest way to guarantee a Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservation is to stay at a Disneyland resort hotel.  If you have a reservation at any of the three Disneyland resort hotels (Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa, the Disneyland Hotel or Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel) during the “reservations required” window of May 31 – June 23, you will automatically receive a reservation for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during your visit.

In fact, you should have already received your designated reservation confirmation if you have a reservation at a Disneyland resort hotel during May 31-June 23, 2019.   Your designated reservation confirmation shows your scheduled date and time window for your Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge visit.    If you have not yet received your Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservation confirmation, please call 888-854-3104.

If you DON’T yet have a reservation at a Disneyland resort, and would like to guarantee a reservation to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, it’s not too late!  You can still book a stay at one of the three Disneyland hotels for any night(s) between May 31 and June 23, 2019.  If you do, you’ll receive a designated reservation for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for each registered guest in your party.  Email brooke@disneycastledreaming.com for more information.  I would love to help you visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge!

Disneyland Visitors

Guests planning to visit Disneyland between May 31 and June 23, 2019 that wish to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will need to make a reservation for their visit.

There is no cost for the reservation. Theme park admission to Disneyland is required to access Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Reservations will open on May 2, 2019 at 10 am Pacific Time.  Disney is releasing “how to book” information at 8 am Pacific Time on May 2.  I will post an update here as soon as “how-to” reservation information is available.

Disney put together this quick “Know Before You Go” video.

What You Will Need To Make a Reservation

Disney's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge Reservation Information
Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Reservation Information (Photo: Disney Parks)

While we don’t have exact “how to make a reservation” specifics yet, we do know a few things that you’ll need before you make your reservation.

    1. Make sure you have your Disney ID account set up at Disneyland.com.  If you don’t have one, set it up NOW so you are ready to go when the reservation window opens.
      1. If you already have an ID for Walt Disney World’s My Disney Experience, you will be able to login at Disneyland.com with that ID.  Double check to make sure!
      2. You will be making your reservation using your DisneyID, so it’s critical that you know what it is and that it works.
    2. Be prepared and ready to go at 10 am Pacific Time on May 2.  Disney is anticipating the reservation “windows” filling up fast.
      1. Make a list of a few different dates that will work for you.  If your first choice isn’t available, you don’t want to have to scramble for the calendar to figure out your second (or third) choices.
      2. Once you have confirmed your reservation for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, you will NOT be able to change it.
      3. You can make ONLY ONE reservation for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge per email address (Disney ID at Disneyland.com).
      4. You’ll be able to add up to five additional guests to your Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservation.
    3. You will only be able to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge ONCE during your visit with your Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservation.  You’ll only be able to make one reservation for the entirety of the period of May 31 – June 23 with your DisneyID email.  After the reservations required period ends, you will theoretically be able to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge every day, assuming new rules aren’t released, and crowd volumes don’t restrict admittance to the Land.

Visiting Later in the Year

What if you are NOT visiting Disneyland between May 31 and June 23, 2019? If you ARE planning to visit later this year, and want to be sure you’ll get access to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, what should you do?

Disney Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Millennium Falcon – Smuggler’s Run                (Photo: Disney Parks)

At this time, Disney states that no reservations are required to enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge after June 23, 2019.  However, they are also saying that access to the land will be limited, and guests will not be guaranteed access.  Admittance may be restricted, based on crowd volumes.

What if you plan to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios after it opens August 29, 201? Disney says no reservations required for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Florida.  Of course that will be subject to change after Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening weeks.

It is possible that Disney may elect to extend the reservation window into future periods.  It is also possible that Disney may use a Fast Pass/Max Pass type reservation to “schedule” access to the Land.  Finally, it may just be a free for all.  In that scenario, I suspect after a certain number of guests are admitted, no additional guests will be admitted until some guests exit the Land.  We just don’t know yet.

Don’t Forget: May 2, 10 am PST                    Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Reservation Window Opens

I will keep you posted as soon as I know more.  In the meantime, make sure you have your Disneyland DisneyID set up at Disneyland.com.  Be ready to go tomorrow (May 2) morning if you intend to make Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservations for May 31 – June 23, 2019.

Happy Dreaming!

Update from the Dark Side: Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Coca-Cola

HUGE NEWS: Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge OPENING May 31st and August 29th!!!!

HUGE NEWS: Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge OPENING May 31st and August 29th!!!!

This is really big news all my lovely Disney trip planners and dreamers!!!  Just moments ago, Disney announced Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge OPENING DATES at BOTH Disneyland and Hollywood Studios!!!

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open, AHEAD OF SCHEDULE, on May 31 at Disneyland in California.  At Hollywood Studios in Florida, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open AUGUST 29–this is MONTHS before we’d anticipated!

Disney Star Wars Disney Hollywood Studios Disney Galaxys Edge
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Artist’s Rendering

This is so exciting, I am freaking out right now.  However, this isn’t ALL rainbows and roses.

Disney has decided to open ahead of schedule in response to the overwhelming response and interest from guests that want to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which is terrific.  BUT the reality is that everything will not really be ready by these earlier than projected dates.  So Disney has decided to open Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Phases.

Phase One, Opening Day

On opening day, guests will be able to get into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  You’ll explore merchant shops and talk to the people living and working on Black Spire Outpost.  You’ll taste galactic food and beverages unlike anything you’ve tried before.

Disney Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run

Perhaps most importantly, you’ll be able to experience the first attraction of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run.  You’re going to be able to get on board the Millennium Falcon, and take the controls and have your own adventure aboard the ship that has starred in so many of our beloved movies and our dreams for so long….

Phase Two, Later This Year

Later this year, the second attraction, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, will open.  This attraction has been touted as the most ambitions, immersive and advanced attraction ever imagined.  It’s going to put you in the middle of a battle between the Resistance and First Order.

Disney released this video earlier today:

What We Can Expect: Limited Capacity

Guests planning to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland between opening day (May 31) and June 23, 2019 will need valid Disneyland park admission and they will be required to make a no-cost reservation, subject to availability, to access Galaxy’s Edge.  Disney has not released information yet on how to make these no-cost reservations; I will update you as soon as I know more!

Guests staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels during this period (May 31-June 23) will received a reservation to access Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during their stay (one reservation per registered guest); Disneyland Park admission is still required.

Capacity will be limited for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for both Disneyland and Hollywood Studios.  Currently, Disney says no reservations will be required to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios.  Also, Disney says Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be open during Extra Magic Hours for resort guests.  More details will be released soon (and as soon as they are, I will share!).

So…Who’s Going to Be There Opening Day?

I cannot begin to tell you guys how excited I am about this news!  I honestly believed Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge would open in late June at Disneyland, and most likely would open at Hollywood Studios in mid December.  This is CRAZY to me that they are this close to being ready to open, even in Phases!!!  I will keep scouring all my Disney sources for more news, and will update you as soon as I know more!

How excited are you by this news?  I’m about to BURST!  Are you currently checking your calendar and rearranging your life to see if you can be there for opening day?

Disney Parks News Updates: Disneyland/California Adventure

The Disneyland After Dark: Heroes Assemble at Disney California Adventure

Disneyland After Dark: Heroes Assemble at California Adventure

As I have discussed before, I’m a fan of the Disney After Dark events.  Yes, they are a separate ticketed event BUT Disney limits the number of tickets they sell, and usually lines are fairly short for attractions that are open, and there are some fun extras included.

Disneyland has announced a new Disneyland After Dark event.  It’s called Heroes Assemble at California Adventure.  Tickets are already on sale for Annual Passholders, and they go on sale on Thursday, February 21st for the general public.  Tickets are $109; children under 2 do not need a ticket.

So far, only two dates have been announced, and based on the dates, it looks like this is a tie in with the release of the Avengers: Endgame movie coming out in May.  This event is being held on April 30 or May 1.  Event hours are 9 pm to 1 am.  It’s not clear yet if your ticket will grant you access to California Adventure earlier than 9 pm on the night of the event, as is usually the case for Disney After Dark events in Florida.

For this event, Disney is encouraging you to come dressed as your favorite super hero; however, they are also reminding everyone to check the rules regarding costumes and accessories.  To review the rules, click here for Disneyland Park Rules, and here to view the costume guidelines for special events.

Celebrating 80 years of comic art, Disneyland After Dark: Heroes Assemble at California Adventure promises to feature encounters with superheroes, “rockin’ dance party” and heroic show moments.  There’s also a fun scavenger hunt planned where you and your friends will have to hunt to find artifacts to help save mankind!

You can also expect lots of great photo opportunities, special event only merchandise and themed food and beverage offerings.  Your ticket will entitle you to free downloads of all Photopass pictures taken of you that evening, so make sure to take LOTS!

The Soundsational Parade is BACK!

I mentioned this a while back, but the very popular Soundsational Parade is back at Disneyland Park as part of the Mickey and Minnie Celebration, Get Your Ears On!

Downtown Disney

In Downtown Disney news this week, Disney has announced a new ticketed event/attraction coming soon to Downtown Disney called Pop Up! Disney.

Disneyland Downtown Disney PopUp Disney
Pop-Up Disney!

They haven’t given us a whole lot of information yet, but it sounds like this will be sort of an exhibit, sort of an adventure in Photo Opps.  It’s going into the space near the Monorail Station where the ESPN Zone used to be.  They’re describing it as a bunch of themed rooms, all dedicated to 90 years of Mickey and Minnie.  I will let you know more as soon as I actually know more!  Disney did release this artist’s rendering of one of the themed rooms/Photo opportunities, see what you think:

Epcot

A few pieces of news from Epcot this week.  First from Mexico, beloved Mariachi Cobre is expanding their repertoire and adding a new show featuring the story of Pixar’s Coco.  (If you haven’t seen Coco yet, go watch it now.  I’ll wait.  Seriously, it’s on Netflix, and you can rent it on Amazon or Vudu or YouTube.  Go watch it.  It’s about family and dreams and there is so much love and joy…it’s really lovely.)

Ok, now that you’re back 😉, beginning March 6, Mariachi Cobre will be joined by a pair of Folklorico dancers to tell the journey of Miguel Rivera.  They are also joined by a puppet of Miguel.

  • Ralph and Vanellope are coming to Epcot!

You may have seen Ralph and Vanellope briefly in November when they popped up at Hollywood Studios to promote Ralph Breaks the Internet when it came out…but they are moving into a new (potentially) long term location at the Imagination Pavilion at Epcot.

Disney Epcot Ralph and Vanellope Character Greeting
Ralph and Vanellope from Ralph Breaks the Internet

Here’s what’s happened:  The Imagination Institute has been conducting a new experiment to open portals into other dimensions….and they’ve opened a portal into the Internet.  This has allowed Ralph and Vanellope to come visit us at Image Works at the Imagination Pavilion!

I’m pretty happy about this.  This pavilion has been largely ignored for a long time, so it’s exciting to see it get something new.  I’m also really happy that Figment will have some fun company!

In somewhat related news, you will soon be able to take Ralph and Vanellope home with you on DVD with the release of the Blu Ray of Ralph Breaks the Internet on February 26.

Garden Rocks Concert Series

The Epcot Flower and Garden Festival starts in just 2 weeks!  Can you believe it??

Disney Epcot Flower and Garden Festival
Epcot Flower and Garden Festival: Cogswell

I can’t!!  As you probably know if you have been following me for any length of time F&G is one of my FAVORITE times of the year, and my absolutely favorite time to visit Epcot.  One of the fun elements of F&G every year has been their Garden Rocks Concert Series.  Garden Rocks concerts are held at the America Gardens Theatre in the American Adventure Pavilion, and are included in your Epcot admission.

Artists are usually nostalgic favorites from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, like Night Ranger, Tony Orlando, Berlin, Herman’s Hermits, Dennis DeYoung and Rick Springfield, among others.  New this year: Air Supply, Journey former lead vocalist Steve Augeri, Wang Chung, The Smithereens, A Flock of Seagulls, Christopher Cross, Sister Sledge….the list goes on and on.  Click here for the full list of performers, and the dates they will be performing during the Festival.

What’s new THIS year is that instead of Garden Rocks Concerts only happening on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the concerts are now going to be held EVERY NIGHT OF THE FESTIVAL!  7 nights a week!

Animal Kingdom

Kevin from UP! at Animal Kingdom

Disney Pixar Up Kevin Animal Kingdom
Pixar’s UP! Favorite Kevin has been seen at Animal Kingdom!

In one of my favorite stories of the week, Kevin, our favorite colorful bird friend from Pixar’s UP! has been seen wandering around Animal Kingdom’s  Discovery island area.  So far, it doesn’t look like there are any plans to set up an official character greeting area for Kevin–so his visit may be temporary–we’re not sure yet.  For now it appears that he’s exploring and interacting with guests, along with his Wilderness Explorer guides.

New Pixar’s Up! Plush Kevin

Coincidentally, Disney is releasing a new Kevin plush toy in Animal Kingdom gift shops this month, so keep your eyes open for him.  Look how cute he is!  You KNOW that if you meet Kevin in the Park, you are going to HAVE to take one of these home, so be careful! 😉

The Lion King, 25th Anniversary

As you or may not know, this year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Lion King animated movie’s original release.  As The Lion King has always been a big part of the Animal Kingdom story, I’m sure you are not going to be surprised that Disney is ramping things up a little bit for the 25th Anniversary of the Lion King.

Disney Animal Kingdom Hakuna Matata Dance Party
Live musicians help guests let their inner animal loose on the dance floor during “Hakuna Matata Time Dance Party” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Hakuna Matata dance parties are already taking place daily at Discovery Island.    These feature animal inspired popular songs from the Lion King performed in a World Beat style.  Timon, Rafiki, Baloo, Korda, Meeks and Terk stop by too!  (Kinda feels like all the animated movies with animal characters got together and decided who could participate in this, doesn’t it?)

Disney has said they are releasing new fun photo spots themed to the Lion King.  They also say we should watch for a 3D scene that looks like it leapt right out of the film.  If I had to guess, I’d bet this 3D scene will be outside the main entrance, as Animal Kingdom is usually very good at preseving its theming and I can’t really picture a three dimensional cartoon scene plopped down in the middle of the park.  But who knows? I could be wrong.  I guess we’ll have to wait to see where they put it when it shows up.

Disney Animal Kingdom Tree of Life Awakenings
Animal Kingdom Tree of Life Awakenings

Coming this summer, also in celebration of the Lion King’s 25th Anniversary, a special new story for the Tree of Life Awakenings projection show.  The new story will depict moments from Simba’s journey in an “artistic style”, which I’m interpreting to mean NOT the art from the original film.  The new story will also feature music inspired by the score of the Lion King–rather than from the movie itself.

And in another shocking coincidence, Disney’s new “Live Action” version of the Lion King is being released this summer.  Have you seen the teaser trailer yet?  If not, here it is:

What do you think?  I suspect it will be very good, but I’m not sure how much “LIVE ACTION” it is…I’m thinking a lot of it has to be CGI, right?  It looks good though, at least what we’ve seen so far, and I love the Lion King, so I’m in.  I’d love to hear what you think, so post in the comments below.

Hollywood Studios

Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy

We are starting to get a tiny bit more information about the new show at Hollywood Studios that is coming this spring.  It’s definitely a SHOW, which wasn’t 100% clear originally, and it sounds like it will allow for some audience interaction with Lightning McQueen.  Check out the video below that Disney released:

I think it sounds like fun, and a welcome addition to Hollywood Studios, which still struggles a bit with all the things that closed in the last two years to make ways for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and the new Minnie/Mickey ride that will replace the Great Movie Ride.  Toy Story Land is terrific, but there’s still a fairly big gap at Hollywood Studios, so I think this will definitely help, and it pairs nicely with the other Pixar attractions and character greetings at Hollywood Studios.  Now if we could only get our own Cars Land…

Disney Springs

In our final news story this week, Disney Springs welcomes a new store, The Art Corner.  Located near The Art of Disney store, not far from Goofy’s Candy Company, this new pop up store sounds like a lot of fun!

It seems to offer several different opportunities to get one of a kind, handcrafted souvenirs–in some cases, even handcrafted by YOU.

Walt Disney World Disney Springs The Art Corner
Disney Springs’ The Art Corner

Disney is calling this a Pop Up store, which makes me think this is most likely a temporary offering…but if it’s popular, it could stick around!  The Art Corner features works and hands on activities that were popular at the recent Epcot International Festival of the Arts.  For example, pictured above is the ancient art of Suminigashi, also known as artistic marbling, used to custom make silk items.

The store also features:

  • Coffee and Canvas—Coffee themed paintings
    • Caricatures, both the new digital sketch version and the classic watercolor style. (I LOVE caricatures!  I think they are a terrific souvenir, especially if you have kids–a really fun way to track how their interests change over the years, as usually the artist will incorporate the child’s interests into the work.)
    • Name Works, hand drawn names personalized with your choice of illustrations
  • Disney Springs Ron Jon Surf Shop
Ron Jon Surf Shop Coming Soon to Disney Springs

Coming later this year to Disney Springs, a Ron Jon Surf Shop.  The famed Surf Shop is moving into a 10,000 square foot space located near the Polite Pig.  I don’t have dates yet, but will update you when I do.

Well that’s all I have for Disney Parks News Updates this week.  IWhich of this week’s news stories are you most interested in?  I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

P.S. In case you missed it, Disney released the teaser trailer for Frozen II last week.  Click here to check it out.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge UPDATE

I was really hoping that we would get a firm opening date for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Hollywood Studios for next year during the D23 event two weeks ago, especially since it seemed like Disney was in the mood to announce ALL kinds of good stuff at that event.

Unfortunately, they didn’t come any closer to announcing actual dates or pinning potential dates down to even a month or two month window.  Currently, the best we have is “Late Summer” for Disneyland and “Late 2019” for Hollywood Studios.

However, even thought we didn’t get the firm dates I was hoping for, we did get a lot of Galaxy’s Edge information, which WAS very exciting.

Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products Chairman Bob Chapek announced the names of the two major attractions that will be part of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when it opens next year (?) at Disneyland and Hollywood Studios.

We’ve known for awhile that one attraction would involve the beloved Millennium Falcon, but we didn’t know what it would be called or much about it.  Now, we know.  This attraction will be called Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run.  Check out the teaser trailer Mr. Chapek presented at the event below:

Doesn’t this look like fun?  In this attraction, you’ll be behind the controls of the most famous starship in the galaxy in one of three unique flight crew roles.

The second opening day attraction at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.  This attraction will put you right in the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order.

Bob Chapek also brought a trailer for THIS attraction as well:

Based on the VERY limited information we have so far from these trailers, and, let’s face it, the way theme park ride technology trends have been going, I suspect both of these attractions will be motion simulators.  Normally, I am not a big fan of motion simulators; however, the Imagineers really worked some amazing magic with Flight of Passage at Pandora in Animal Kingdom–it’s quickly become one of my favorite attractions of all time–so I’m hoping that the Star Wars motion simulators will be the latest and greatest and just as good (or better) than Flight of Passage and will NOT make me queasy.  Fingers crossed.  We all know I’m riding anyway.  But it would be NICE if these attractions didn’t make me ill.

Guess what?  After all this amazing attraction news, Mr. Chapek still wasn’t done with his update about Galaxy’s Edge.  And honestly, I’m just about as excited about this news as I am about the attractions:  John Williams, who composed and orchestrated the original iconic score for Star Wars is composing new and original music for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  You guys know how much I love Disney’s attention to theming and how there are so many tiny details that many guests never even notice that help make the overall experience so enjoyable….MUSIC is a big part of that.  The music is different in every Disney park Land; the music is different at the holiday parties and special events.  Certain attractions have their own memorable music, and these musical themes all contribute to your experience.

Getting John Williams to create new music, exclusively for these lands at the Disney parks is a HUGE part of ensuring that Galaxy’s Edge will be as immersive as they are planning for it to be, and it shows that no detail is being ignored.  They could easily just use music already in the existing library of films and shows—there’s a lot of it, and I’m sure some familiar themes will be present…but to have the original composer create new music to add to the new world they’re creating?  I LOVE THIS!!!!

In the video below, you can see and hear some of this new music being recorded…and even better, you will see scenes of the construction project for Galaxy’s Edge…much of this footage we have not seen before!

They are officially now setting our expectations that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be a multi-day experience.  If this is the case, this will take Hollywood Studios from usually a one day visit to potentially a 3 -4 day visit.  Which may mean that future trip planning may require either skipping one (or more) theme parks on your one week vacation–or that your typical one week vacation may need to be longer.

A dilemma that we will spend much time talking about and planning for in future months, I assure you.

Mr. Chapek shared a few more highlights about Galaxy’s Edge:

  • Galaxy’s Edge is an Outpost called Black Spire Outpost (we knew that already, but we’re summarizing the good stuff here)
  • You’ll be able to visit the Cantina
  • Someone you may remember from Star Tours, Rex, will be a familar face in the Cantina
  • There will be other familiar creatures and characters in the Cantina
  • There is a street market in Black Spire Outpost
  • The street market has food stalls–you can buy unique delicacies like blue milk

Mr. Chapek also briefly mentioned the previously announced Star Wars resort coming to Walt Disney World resort.  It sounds like they are really trying to tread new territory here.  The resort will be connected to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios, and Disney is calling it a fully immersive Star Wars adventure.  Mr. Chapek says resort guests will be aboard a “luxury starship” that will have high-end dining, space-view cabins and all of the exciting action that we’d expect from a Star Wars experience.

Lots of good stuff to look forward to, right?  I can’t wait for more information to come out.  I want ALL the information!  And of course, as soon as I have it, so will you!

Happy Dreaming,

Brooke

P.S. – It’s not too soon to start planning your first visit to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  Late 2019 should be safe for Disneyland and early 2020 should be good for Hollywood Studios.  Contact me today and we can start building your plan!  brooke@disneycastledreaming.com.

Disney Travel with a Group: Challenges and Survival Tips

If you are in the midst of planning a trip or event for a large group of people at a place like Disney, for example a wedding, family reunion, vow renewal, or milestone birthday celebration, you are likely to discover some unique challenges.  Disney travel with a group is really fun, but can also have dangerous potholes you will want to look out for.

Transportation & Logistics Challenges

For example, is everyone staying at the same resort?  If not, transportation may be a challenge.  When we were planning our wedding, we ended up with people staying at four different resorts.  Planning transportation for wedding events ended up being one of our biggest challenges!  Depending on the size of your group, your travel agent (or planner for your group) may be able to work with Disney to get discounted rates for your group.  This tends to work for large groups, or groups who are also using Disney catered events, Disney Fairy Tale Weddings, etc.  But it’s always worth a try!  Try to choose one or two resorts that will work for your group. The best scenario is one resort.  However, depending on your group, you may want to offer resorts in different financial tiers to accommodate different budgets.

Of course, sometimes, people will just do their own thing, regardless of what you plan for your event.  If that happens, you then have to decide if you’ll include their transportation needs in your planning, or if you’ll make it their responsibility to get to the planned events.   But know there’s a good chance it will happen, and be prepared and decide early how you will handle this if it happens.

Group Composition Challenges

The composition of the group can also present some challenges.  Is your group a mixture of families with kids and young singles or couples?  Or perhaps a mix of adults and children of all ages and interests?  Does everyone know each other already, or does anyone know each other at all?

Depending on what you are planning, you may just have specific events to worry about, and outside of that, everyone will be on their own.  For example, you can plan a wedding and wedding reception for your guests and then leave on your honeymoon.  Or you can plan a Family Reunion that is all about one specific afternoon or evening event.

Alternatively, you may have a situation where you will have some “official” events, usually paid for by the planners, but you may want to spend more time with everyone outside of the “official” events.   You may want to plan a “Get to Know You” casual event near the beginning of the trip, if your group involves a lot of people that don’t know each other.

For example, very large families, traveling to a reunion; corporate events with multiple branches coming together; even weddings often face the challenge of lots of invitees who don’t know each other.  A casual ice breaking event is often a great way to get everyone to get to know each other and start talking before the more “official events” begin.  Again, this will depend on your group, your budget, and the purpose of your gathering.

Do NOT Bring a Stick and a Pole or a Megaphone!

The first thing you have to accept is that in a place like Disney, it is going to be impossible to try and keep large groups together for any substantial period of time.  In a daydream, it can be lovely to imagine your group of 40 people joyfully going from attraction to attraction, stopping for Mickey bars and Photopass pictures along the way.  However, the reality? Doesn’t really work that way.  We’ve all seen the tour groups following the guide with flag on a pole, marching gleefully through the park chanting first thing in the morning…but have you seen them later in the day?  They usually look lost, miserable, and frustrated…and those chants?  Not so cheery.

The reality: Trying to move even a small group of 5 -7 people all together is like herding cats.  (For those of you who don’t have cats, it’s REALLY REALLY INSANE).  Throw in another 10+ people and you will all lose your minds and end up hating each other.  Honestly, I swear it’s true.  So, please trust me on this.  Let the idea of all staying together for long periods of time GO.

Instead, plan specific activities to try and do together, and tell everyone up front that you’ll meet for these specific activities, but the rest of the time is their own.   Some of the group may naturally end up staying together for chunks of time, but I think you will find, for the most part, the large group will break up into much smaller groups of 2 – 5 people.

Something Important to Consider…

(Or: How to avoid having your group plot your murder…)

Is your group going on vacation to Disney and attending your event(s) while they’re there, or are they attending your event(s) and visiting Disney when there’s time after/around your event(s).  It’s a good idea to know the basic perspective that the majority of your group will have.  If everyone is viewing this as their vacation, and they’re fitting in your event(s), you will need to be super careful about how much time you try to “take” from their vacation—or you are likely to run into resistance and push back.

Even though your wedding or Grandma’s birthday may be the most important thing in the world to you (and probably Grandma), not everyone in your group will have that same perspective.  It’s important to know your group, and what their goals and wishes for the trip are—this will help minimize disappointment and hurt feelings on all sides.  And ideally, keep the death threats to a minimum.

[Note: the author assumes no liability, expressed or implied for any actual death threats, actual or implied that may or may not arise from any of the advice provided on this blog.]

Optional Get-Togethers

When we were planning our wedding weekend, we really wanted to try and spend as much time with all of our guests as possible.  We had “official” events, of course—the welcome dinner, the wedding, the reception and the dessert party that we knew everyone would be attending, but we hoped to get more time with everyone than that.

So, we decided to plan some optional “extra” meet-ups, in hopes that everyone would come to at least one or two of these and we would get more time with everyone.  For our group, we focused on meals.  We booked large group Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) for one or two meals each day, depending on the day, at favorite restaurants we wanted to share with people we loved, and invited everyone to join us.

Logistically, this is a bit of a headache, as with Disney’s cancellation fees, you have to plan ahead for this, and get people to commit at least 36 hours ahead of the meal, so you have time to cancel…but we ended up with 10-20 people at several of our meals and it was AWESOME.  In our case, everyone did separate checks, but there are lots of different ways to handle this.  If everyone is on the dining plan, you can use table service credits.

Alternatively, to help everyone budget (and confirm those commitments!), you could have everyone prepay a fixed amount toward the meals they’re joining before the trip, and have one person responsible for paying the bill and collecting any overages.  If you need help brainstorming ideas, reach out to me, I’m happy to help!

Attraction Meet-Ups

Another idea is to plan a particular attraction at a particular time, and all meet up and do that together.  This can be challenging for more popular attractions that need Fastpasses.  However, you can coordinate everyone’s Fastpass reservations to schedule them into the same range, or at least try and get them to overlap for at least a 30 minute window.  Attractions that are “shows” are good for this, like Mickey’s Philharmagic, Muppets, Carousel of Progress, etc.  You want to make sure you’ve picked something that everyone in your group can enjoy.  If anyone is too little to ride, or won’t be comfortable or won’t enjoy it…maybe think about doing something else instead.

I’ve planned for some groups that had success meeting at slow moving rides with lots of other stuff going around it, so the group stayed together for a while.  For example: One group I worked with had 17 people, including several small children, and a senior in a wheelchair.  They met at Finding Nemo at the Living Seas in Epcot at 9:15 am, and then explored the Livings Seas Pavilion more or less as a group, attending Turtle Talk with Crush as a group, and then went to Lunch at Coral Reef as a group.  After that, they split off into smaller groups or families until the next day.  This worked for them, and they managed to get a big group PhotoPass picture by the fish near the entrance of the Finding Nemo attraction (all part of my plan, haha).

Photo Meet-Ups

Still another idea is just to meet for a Photopass picture periodically.  For example, suggest everyone meet at the Partner’s statue at 1:15pm to check in.  You take a big group picture, see how everyone is doing, and then everyone goes on about their day.

Your meetups don’t have to be in the parks, either.  You can plan a group pizza party around the pool at your resort for everyone to unwind at the end of a busy park day.  Or even just plan to meet at the resort at 2pm by the pool for everyone to go swimming or enjoy some relaxation time.

Ideas for Group Meet-Ups or “Extra” Events:

  • Hoop-de-do Revue
  • Photopass location meet-up for a group picture
  • Meet at an all-ages attraction. Some great choices include:
    • Walt Disney World Railroad
    • It’s a Small World
    • Carousel of Progress
    • Finding Nemo (the attraction)
    • Living with the Land
    • Muppet Vision 3D
    • Finding Nemo the Musical
  • Resort activities. For example:
    • An afternoon pool party
    • Participate in the Disney movie night at your resort
    • Plan a resort photo shoot, either with a Disney Fine Arts photographer, or your own photographer (I have recommendations, if you need help with this).
  • Parks/Resorts/Disney Springs or All of the above: Plan a game or activity for the whole group that people can help each other with, talk about, etc.  I’ve had a lot of success with customized Photo Scavenger Hunts.  They can be short: targeting one afternoon, and one park or resort.  Alternatively, they can span several days, and include several sections and some scheduled meetups for pictures etc.  One obvious benefit is that you, as the planner, will end up with a lot of great “extra” pictures from the Photo Scavenger Hunt that you might not have gotten otherwise.  Your guests will have so much fun trying to complete the tasks, they won’t even notice they’re suddenly in a lot more pictures than they might have otherwise been in.  It’s sneaky, but it works!!
    • Click HERE if you’d like to visit my Etsy store to contact me about designing something specific for your group.
  • Work together to “make a gift” or “create a basket” for the guest or guests of honor if your event revolves around a birthday party, anniversary party, wedding etc.
    • For example, for Aunt Edie’s 85th Birthday, you could have a scrapbooking party.  You could set up tables with paper and photos and scissors and decorations, and have each table make a couple of pages for a scrapbook to be presented to Aunt Edie at her party.
    • For a wedding, you could have everyone contribute a recipe and make a recipe book with family pictures as a scrapbook type project, similar afternoon or evening gathering.
  • Ride Mix-In: One of the highlights for our guests for our wedding weekend was a ride mix-in we planned after our dessert party ended at Epcot.  Our guests were treated to a surprise ride on Soarin’ right at the end of the night.  They rode with other park guests (they were “mixed in”), but our group got their own row.  It was a fairly economical option for us, and a big hit for our guests.  Check with your event planner or travel agent if you think that’s something you may want to consider.

Soarin' Post Dessert Party Ride Mix In Disney travel with a group
Soarin’ Post-Dessert Party Ride Mix In

There are lots of ways to get together, without trying to walk lockstep, 10 people across, through the Magic Kingdom for 8 hours straight.  Everyone vacations differently.  Some people like to GO GO GO, and basically run from attraction to attraction.  Others like to meander, looking at all those special details, perhaps without any destination in mind at all.  Many of us fall somewhere in between.  The point is, you won’t be able to make ANYONE happy if you try to make EVERYONE happy.

Key Considerations for Planning Group “Extra” Events or Meetups:

  • How many? Decide how many group “meet ups” you want to plan.
    • A good general rule of thumb is 1 or 2 events per day, maximum.
    • Take into consideration your specific group and the reason for your trip.
  • Get Input: Talk to other members of the group to get their input before you finalize your plans.
    • Maybe the majority of your group has no interest in getting together very often.
    • Find out what expectations people have, and what they’d like to do.
  • Budget: Make sure you know what kind of budget you are working with. If you’re planning attraction or photo meet ups, budget isn’t an issue, as long as everyone has a park pass.  However meals have budgetary impact.  And don’t assume that everyone will have a park pass—find out.
  • Where: Decide whether your meet ups will be in the parks or at the resort, or a mixture.
  • For Whom: Try to consider what is important to MOST of the group.  Remember this meet up isn’t about YOU, it’s about the group getting together.  You want to be sure you aren’t just choosing something that YOU like without considering if everyone else would really like it. (Even if it’s an event around your wedding.  Unless it’s actually a wedding event, try and make the other events more about the group and togetherness, rather than just about you and your fiancé).
  • Prioritize Guests of Honor: If you are celebrating someone’s birthday or anniversary, keep THAT person in mind. If it’s a family reunion, keep the most senior members of the family in mind.  Reunions tend to be more for the grandparents and the great grandparents than for the kids—even at Disney!
  • Take Pictures: wherever you meet up, how often you meet up, whatever you end up doing…make sure there are a couple of different people in charge of taking pictures. After the trip is over, and everyone has returned home to their regular lives, perhaps in different parts of the country or even the globe, you will have these pictures.  These pictures will be special memories that will instantly bring all of you back together.  Try to make sure that you have some casual pictures of as many people in your group as possible.  Even if you are waiting in line for an attraction, try to take pictures of people being together.  Have a couple different people in charge of this, so that no one person ends up in NO pictures because they are always taking pictures of everyone else.

It’s All About the Attitude!

DECIDE You are Going to Have a Great Time

Group events and Family reunions can sometimes be fraught with tension and drama. Even in happy places on vacations, there are sometimes hurt feelings or someone behaving badly or someone who missed their nap and is crabby, etc.  You have to decide that no matter what, you are going to have a great time.  Don’t let the little irritations get you down.

If there’s a Guest of Honor, try and help them have that same perspective if you can.  So much of what happens to us in life is a direct result of our attitude and our expectations.  If you EXPECT to have a great time, most of the time—you will.  When you EXPECT to get in a fight with you father’s second cousin over Saturday’s football game…you probably will.  DECIDE to have a good time, no matter what…and you WILL!
