As I work with more multi-generational families, I’m seeing a shift in how people think about vacations. Disney is wonderful, but it isn’t always the right fit for every trip or every group. Sometimes families want something that feels simpler, slower, and easier to settle into. One option I often discuss with families is all-inclusive resorts for multi-generational families, especially when the goal is time together without constant planning.
This post is part of my Beyond the Castle series, where I share thoughtful alternatives for families who want meaningful time together without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
Why All-Inclusive Resorts Work So Well for Multi-Generational Families
When families plan trips that include grandparents, adult children, and grandchildren, the goal is often the same: time together that actually feels enjoyable. But coordinating schedules, meals, activities, and transportation for multiple generations can quickly turn a vacation into a logistics exercise.
One of the reasons some families choose all-inclusive resorts is how much decision-making is handled ahead of time. Meals are available without reservations weeks in advance. Transportation stays simple. Activities are offered throughout the day without needing to build a detailed plan. Everyone can move at their own pace without feeling like they’re holding anyone else back.
Photo: Beaches Resorts
I often hear from grandparents who want to treat their family to a special trip, but don’t want to spend the vacation managing details or checking schedules. They want time to sit, talk, laugh, and simply enjoy being together. All-inclusive resorts can make that easier because the structure is already in place, allowing families to relax into the experience instead of coordinating it.
Flexibility without Friction
Another benefit is flexibility. Some family members want to stay active from morning through evening. Others prefer a slower rhythm with breaks built in. At an all-inclusive resort, those preferences can coexist comfortably. Families can come together for meals or shared activities, then separate for rest or quiet time without it feeling disruptive or disappointing.
That doesn’t mean all-inclusive vacations are right for every family or every trip. Just like Disney, they work best when they match the reason for the vacation in the first place. For families who value ease, comfort, and shared moments over packed schedules, they can be a wonderful option to consider.
Photo: Beaches Resorts
Sometimes the trips people remember most aren’t defined by what they did each hour, but by how relaxed everyone felt while they were together.
All-inclusive resorts offer a different kind of experience, one that can be especially appealing when the priority is connection, comfort, and time spent side by side.
If you’re curious whether an all-inclusive resort might be a good fit for your family, I’m always happy to talk it through and help you think about what would work best for your group.
Let’s be honest—summer vacations aren’t always relaxing. Between crowded theme parks, noisy pool areas, and kid-filled flights, it can start to feel like your “vacation” needs a vacation. So if you’re craving a summer vacation getaway that feels more like a deep exhale than a jam-packed itinerary, this list is for you.
Here are three summer vacation ideas for adults who want actual peace and quiet.
1. An Adults-Only All-Inclusive Resort (Think: Sandals Style)
All-inclusive doesn’t have to mean party central. Many of the adults-only Sandals resorts in the Caribbean are built for relaxation, not rowdy crowds. Think swim-up suites, beachfront hammocks, and private cabanas with butler service. Some of their quieter resorts include:
Sandals Halcyon Photo: Sandals Resorts
Sandals Halcyon Beach (St. Lucia) – low-key and lush, with a “garden of Eden” vibe
Sandals Royal Plantation (Jamaica) – smaller, all-butler boutique resort with peaceful energy
Sandals Grenada – upscale and romantic, but not too loud
Sandals Grenada Photo: Sandals Resort
You’ll find plenty of included activities if you want them, but no one’s going to pressure you into pool games or karaoke nights if that’s not your thing.
2. A Boutique River Cruise in Europe
If you love the idea of cruising but not the massive ships, a European river cruise could be your dream vacation. Picture this: floating down the Rhine or the Danube, sipping wine on the sun deck, and docking in storybook villages—all without the crowds.
Viking River Cruises
Lines like AmaWaterways, Viking, and Uniworld cater to grown-ups who love good food, local culture, and a more intimate travel experience. Cabins are cozy but upscale, and the whole vibe is calm, classy, and no-fuss.
Bonus: you only have to unpack once.
3. A Secluded Nature Retreat in the U.S.
If flying international isn’t in the cards, there are so many peaceful places to explore here in the States—especially if you love nature.
A few quiet options to consider:
A luxury cabin in Big Sky, Montana with mountain views and hot tubs under the stars
A quiet lakefront Airbnb in Vermont or New Hampshire, ideal for reading, kayaking, and sipping wine by the fire
A wellness-focused escape in Sedona, Oregon wine country, or the North Carolina mountains
Sedona
You can be as unplugged or pampered as you want—especially if you work with a travel advisor (like me!) who knows how to find the hidden gems.
The Bottom Line
If your soul is craving stillness, connection, and space to breathe, there are vacation options out there that can actually recharge you. You don’t have to book a loud resort or spend your entire vacation on the go. Whether you want a beachfront retreat, a quiet cruise, or a cabin in the woods, I’d love to help you plan something that feeds your joy.

Whether you’re celebrating something special or simply craving some uninterrupted peace and sunshine, these three Sandals Resorts offer next-level luxury in the Caribbean.
Sandals Grenada, Photo: Sandals Resorts
Adults-only travel has become increasingly popular, especially for those of us looking to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with ourselves, our partners, or our peace of mind. No surprise, really—when the only decisions you have to make are beach or pool, mojito or margarita, it becomes the kind of trip that actually feels like a vacation.

In this week’s Beyond the Castle, we take a look at an exciting new Beaches Resort — Beaches Exuma — coming to The Bahamas later this year. Get ready for an exciting new destination perfect for your next family getaway! Beaches Resorts is expanding to The Bahamas, and here’s your first look at what to expect.
In the world of luxury family travel, few names carry as much weight as Beaches Resorts. Known for creating unforgettable all-inclusive experiences for families of all sizes, Beaches has long been a favorite for those seeking the perfect blend of relaxation for parents and excitement for kids.
Photo: Beaches Resorts
Now, the beloved brand is expanding with its fourth resort and first-ever location in The Bahamas. Let’s explore everything we know so far about Beaches Exuma, set to become the Caribbean’s newest family paradise.
The Transformation: From Sandals to Beaches
Beaches Exuma isn’t being built from scratch – instead, it’s being transformed from the existing Sandals Emerald Bay, an adults-only luxury resort that has been a staple in Great Exuma for years. Sandals Emerald Bay closed its doors on August 15, 2024, to begin its transformation into a family-friendly Beaches resort.
Sandals Emerald Bay – Photo: Sandals Resorts
This conversion is part of Sandals Resorts International’s strategic growth plan across the Caribbean. While some longtime fans of Sandals Emerald Bay might feel nostalgic about the change, the conversion makes perfect sense given the property’s original design and the natural family appeal of Exuma.
Location, Location, Location
Great Exuma is often called one of The Bahamas’ best-kept secrets. Located in the Out Islands, it offers a more secluded and authentic Bahamian experience compared to more touristy Nassau or Grand Bahama. The island is known for its stunning natural beauty, including the famous swimming pigs of nearby Exuma Cays, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters.
The resort itself sits on over 500 acres of prime oceanfront property with more than 6,000 feet of shoreline, providing ample space for families to spread out and explore. Its location makes it perfect for snorkeling, water sports, and other family adventures.
Photo: Beaches Resorts
Accommodations for Every Family
One of the biggest changes coming to the property is the reconfiguration of accommodations to better suit families. The new Beaches Exuma will feature:
Multi-bedroom villas perfect for larger families
Suites with connecting rooms to give parents and kids their own space
Updated and modernized room categories with family-friendly amenities
Photo; Beaches Resorts
The former Sandals property already had many one and two-bedroom suites, making it well-suited for this transformation. The renovation will enhance these spaces with family needs in mind.
Dining Options Galore
Beaches Exuma will undergo upgrades to its 12 restaurants and culinary offerings. While specific restaurant concepts haven’t been announced yet, we can expect:
Family-friendly dining venues with kid-approved menus
Upscale options for parents to enjoy
Casual beachside eateries
Ice cream parlors and other sweet treats
If other Beaches resorts are any indication, there will be something to satisfy every palate, from the pickiest of eaters to the most sophisticated foodie.
Photo: Beaches Resorts
Activities for All Ages
Perhaps the most exciting part of the transformation will be the addition of family-focused amenities and activities. These will include:
An all-new Kids Camp with age-appropriate activities
A splash deck and water features for younger children
A redesigned pool area with options for family fun and adult relaxation
Teen-focused spaces and activities
Photo: Beaches Resorts
The resort will also retain some of its most beloved amenities, including:
The world-class Red Lane Spa
The stunning Greg Norman-designed 18-hole Emerald Bay golf course
Water sports and beach activities
Photo: Beaches Resorts
When Can You Visit?
While an exact opening date has not been announced, renovation work is began in Fall 2024. This is a big project, but currently Beaches Exuma is expected to open late this year.
This timeline aligns with Beaches Resorts’ recently announced expansion plans, which include nearly $1 billion in investments across several properties, including Beaches Exuma, Beaches Barbados (breaking ground in late 2025), and an expansion of the popular Beaches Turks & Caicos.

What Makes Beaches Resorts Special
For those who haven’t experienced a Beaches resort before, it’s worth noting what sets these properties apart from other family all-inclusive options:
Partnership with Sesame Street®, featuring character experiences, parades, and activities
Certified nannies and Kids Camp staff
Age-appropriate programming for babies, toddlers, kids, and teens
Inclusive amenities like water parks, Xbox Play Lounges, and teen nightclubs
All-inclusive water sports and activities
Autism-friendly programming and staff training
Beaches Resorts has consistently been recognized as one of the world’s leading family vacation brands, earning accolades from Parents magazine and other family travel authorities.

Dreaming of your next luxury getaway? Sandals’ newest Caribbean paradise might just be the hidden gem you’ve been searching for.
When it comes to all-inclusive luxury in the Caribbean, Sandals has long set the gold standard. But their newest resort, Sandals Saint Vincent and The Grenadines, which opened in March 2024, takes that standard to spectacular new heights.
Having just celebrated its one-year anniversary, this stunning property has quickly become the crown jewel of the Sandals portfolio, and for good reason. Here’s everything you need to know about this extraordinary destination.
Photo: Sandals Resorts
A Setting Like No Other
The moment you arrive at Sandals Saint Vincent, you understand why Sandals Executive Chairman Adam Stewart waited over 20 years to develop this particular location. The 50-acre property sits nestled between dramatic volcanic mountains and a pristine private cove, creating what many guests describe as “Jurassic Park meets luxury resort.”
This unique setting offers a completely different vibe from other Caribbean destinations. The lush, mountainous landscape provides a striking backdrop to every view, whether you’re lounging by the pool, dining at one of the restaurants, or relaxing on your private patio.
Photo: Sandals Resorts
Innovative Accommodations
Sandals Saint Vincent features 301 rooms and suites across 15 different categories, but what makes them truly special is their thoughtful design and unprecedented features. The resort offers several industry firsts:
Two-Story Overwater Villas: The first of their kind in any Sandals resort, these stunning accommodations feature see-through glass floors, multiple bedrooms, and private patios with hanging daybeds.
Beachfront Butler Villas with Media Rooms: Perfect for couples who want entertainment options alongside luxury, these spacious suites include dedicated media rooms with large-screen TVs.
Suites with Private Fitness Rooms: For wellness enthusiasts who want privacy during their workouts, select suites come equipped with their own fitness equipment.
All rooms embrace a clean, minimalist aesthetic that puts the focus where it belongs—on the breathtaking natural beauty just outside your door.
Photo: Sandals Resorts
Culinary Excellence
With 11 restaurants and 9 bars, the dining options at Sandals Saint Vincent elevate the all-inclusive experience to new heights:
Buccan: The first of its kind in the Sandals portfolio, this reservation-only restaurant features traditional open-fire cooking and communal seating for a unique dining experience.
Scrimshaw: An upscale seafood restaurant where fresh catches are prepared with local ingredients and Caribbean flair.
Gatsu Gatsu: For sushi lovers, this Japanese restaurant offers expertly prepared rolls and ramen dishes.
Butch’s Island Chophouse: The perfect spot for steak enthusiasts, featuring premium cuts and decadent desserts.
Photo: Sandals Resorts
What makes the dining experience even more special is that almost all venues offer à la carte service rather than buffets, creating a more refined atmosphere throughout the resort.
Activities & Amenities
Beyond relaxing by the four pools (including both lively and quiet options) or on the private beach, Sandals Saint Vincent offers a wealth of included activities:
Water Sports: From snorkeling and scuba diving to sailing, paddleboarding, and even waterskiing, all equipment and instruction are included.
Fitness: A state-of-the-art fitness center plus daily classes like yoga and aqua aerobics.
Entertainment: Nightly shows, live music, and themed events keep the energy high.
Spa: While treatments at the Red Lane Spa come at an additional cost, guests can enjoy complimentary access to the cold plunge, sauna, and steam room facilities.
Photo: Sandals Resorts
One charming detail that guests consistently mention: bikes are available throughout the property, making it easy and fun to navigate the expansive resort.
Excursions Worth Taking
While the resort itself offers enough to keep you entertained for days, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is known for its natural beauty and amazing excursions:
Tobago Cays: A boat trip to snorkel with sea turtles in their natural habitat is consistently rated as a must-do experience.
La Soufrière Volcano: For the adventurous, hiking this active volcano offers incredible views and a one-of-a-kind experience.
Botanical Gardens: Dating back to 1765, these are the oldest botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere.
Island Hopping: Day trips to nearby islands like Bequia and Mustique offer glimpses into different aspects of Caribbean culture.
Service That Stands Out
Like all Sandals resorts, Saint Vincent offers Butler Elite service in select accommodations. These professionally trained butlers handle everything from unpacking your luggage to reserving the perfect spot on the beach each day.
Even in non-butler accommodations, the staff consistently receives rave reviews for their warm hospitality and attention to detail.
Is It Worth It?
With rates starting from around $400 per person per night (and ranging up to $1,500+ for premium accommodations), Sandals Saint Vincent represents a significant investment in your vacation budget. However, considering that this price includes luxury accommodations, gourmet dining, premium beverages, water sports, entertainment, and more, most guests find it delivers excellent value.
Photo: Sandals Resorts
For couples celebrating special occasions like honeymoons or milestone anniversaries, the resort offers additional packages that include special touches like private dinners on the beach.
Planning Your Visit
A few tips to make the most of your Sandals Saint Vincent experience:
Book Early: As the newest and most unique Sandals property, availability can be limited, especially for the most desirable room categories.
Consider Travel Time: The resort is approximately 45 minutes from Argyle International Airport, with complimentary transfers included.
Pack Accordingly: While the resort is casual during the day, some restaurants require resort evening attire at dinner.
Make Reservations: While most restaurants don’t require reservations, Buccan and Butch’s Chophouse are exceptions and should be booked early in your stay.
Photo: Sandals Resorts
The Bottom Line
Sandals Saint Vincent and The Grenadines offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, luxury accommodations, and exceptional service that creates a truly unforgettable vacation experience. If you’re looking for a Caribbean escape that goes beyond the typical beach resort, this stunning property deserves a place at the top of your travel wish list.

If you’re a Disney Cruise Line fan (like me!), you already know how magical it is to have everything planned out, your meals taken care of, and the world waiting to be explored… all without constantly reaching for your wallet. That’s the dream, right?
But here’s something you may not have considered yet: all-inclusive resorts can offer that same kind of stress-free, pampered experience as a cruise vacation—sometimes with more flexibility and (gasp!) a lower price tag.
This week in our Beyond the Castle series, we’re diving into the wonderful world of all-inclusive vacations—and how they stack up against the cruise vacations so many of us already love.
Let’s break it down…
Photo: Beaches Ochos Rios
🏝️ What is an All-Inclusive Resort?
At its core, an all-inclusive resort is a one-stop vacation shop. You pay a flat rate, and once you arrive, nearly everything is taken care of—your room, meals, snacks, drinks (yes, even the adult beverages!), entertainment, and many activities are all included.
Some all-inclusive resorts even offer airport transfers, 24/7 room service, water sports, and nightly shows as part of the package.
No surprise bills at checkout. No worrying about budgeting every dinner. Just… relaxation.
Pros of an All-Inclusive Resort Vacation:
✅ One price = meals, drinks, entertainment, and more ✅ Often includes water sports, yoga, fitness classes, and more ✅ Airport transfers frequently included ✅ More space to spread out than a ship ✅ Flexible schedule—dine, rest, or explore whenever you want ✅ Great for both romance (Sandals!) and families (Beaches!) ✅ No seasickness or port hustle
Cons of an All-Inclusive Resort Vacation:
⚠️ Usually stay in one location the entire trip ⚠️ Excursions often cost extra ⚠️ Service quality varies between resort brands ⚠️ Some resort activities may require advance reservations ⚠️ Resort atmosphere can be too quiet or too party-ish depending on the property ⚠️ Less of a “see the world” feeling compared to cruising
Photo: Disney Cruise Line
🚢 Cruise Vacations: Floating Cities of Fun
Cruises offer an incredible way to see multiple destinations while only unpacking once. For many of us, they’re the perfect blend of adventure and convenience—with food, entertainment, and accommodations all bundled together.
However, while your stateroom and main dining are included, there are often a lot of extras to plan for:
Gratuities
Shore excursions
Specialty dining
Beverage packages
Wi-Fi access
Port fees and taxes
If you’ve ever had sticker shock looking at your final cruise bill… you are not alone!
Pros of a Cruise Vacation:
✅ Explore multiple destinations without unpacking ✅ Wide variety of entertainment, shows, and themed events ✅ Excellent for families (especially Disney Cruise Line) ✅ All meals included in main dining rooms ✅ Great for socializing and meeting new people ✅ Themed cruise experiences (e.g. Marvel, Star Wars, holiday sailings)
Cons of a Cruise Vacation:
⚠️ Extra costs add up fast (excursions, drinks, Wi-Fi, tips, etc.) ⚠️ Fixed itinerary—you’re on the ship’s schedule ⚠️ Motion sickness may be a concern ⚠️ Smaller cabins than most hotel rooms ⚠️ Less flexibility once onboard ⚠️ Crowds and lines, especially on sea days
Let’s Face It: All-Inclusive Resort or Cruise Vacation: You’re Winning!
Photo: RCL Allure of the Seas
First of all, I have to say that when one of the toughest decisions you have to make is whether you are going to go on a cruise vacation or stay at an all-inclusive resort, you’re having a pretty good time. You’re pretty much guaranteed a win either way.
I also have to say that not all cruise lines are created equal, and not all all-inclusive resorts are created equal. The quality and type of experience you have can be dramatically different between the various cruise lines and all the different all-inclusive resorts.
This doesn’t mean that one brand is better than another: they all have their strengths. What matters most in making these decisions is what is important to YOU. Things like budget, location, type of room, how much sleep you like on vacation–it’s ALL important when choosing whether to take a cruise vacation, an all-inclusive resort vacation or even an adventure travel vacation. It’s important that you do your research or work with a trusted travel advisor to make sure that whichever cruise vacation or all-inclusive resort you book, it’s a good fit for you and your family or traveling buddies.

And don’t worry—Disney’s not going anywhere. But there’s a whole big world of magic out there, and I can’t wait to help you explore it.
